Unimog 404 Clutch Job (Time Lapse)

  • This is a time lapse of the clutch replacement on my '61 Unimog 404. The truck had been sitting for 4 years due to the failed clutch, so needed quite a bit of work and a few parts replaced. The job in total took me about two weekends and 60 hours to do.
    At the end of the video, you can see a comical attempt to "drive" the truck, as it was a bit unhappy. Its now running smoothly after a couple more days of troubleshooting the ignition and carburetor.
    Soundtrack:
    1) Roaring Boys - Again And Again
    2) The Droids - The Force (Part I)
    3) Data - Boys Will Be Boys
    4) DÖF - Codo
    5) Moderne - Switch on Bach
    6) Patenbrigade: Wolff - Volksarmee
    7) Hypno-Twists - Cactus

    I had the clutch go on mine. the text books say you have to remove rear axle to get the prop shafts out or take the cab off. Not necessary, we removed the rad and shifted the engine forward and done the job in a few days. We were going to cut the grill out if we did not have enough room but in the end we did not have to. Use scissor jacks to shift the engine forward and hang the engine with a block and tackle from a beam of wood resting across the door tops. We also had to convert a distributor cap from a 6 pot car because we could not get a replacement cap. The original was all metal and shielded as were the leads. Great machine, bodywork by Zeppelin!! We went to a few military shows and had great times off roading. I love them.

      You're welcome! Hoping to put another video together showing the final product after clutch job, DoKa transformation, custom bed, side steps, and canvas top. Finished it just in time for our wedding...

    This is a great video!, I have done this on 3 different 404's myself. It's possible to do it a lot easier without having to dissemble so much although having motor and transmission all exposed is nice

    I drove the same truck in French army in West Berlin on year 1980. Fantastic truck who can go everywhere you want...but you need a lot of (to much) gasoline for that...

      @desertpir8  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +93KAPLAN - Very cool! I have met quite a few people that drove these in the military. They always have some great stories about the trucks. Fortunately regarding the poor fuel economy, gasoline is cheap here in the US. :)

      Unbreakable engine !!! Directly full acceleration on 1st gear (over rd/mn) , just after starting engine by -20° celcius. No problem, absolutly amazing !!! I never tried this with my car...

    Here's an idea: Lets take the whole truck apart and change the clutch. Shitze.
    I wonder if a Pinzgauer is as much of a clusterXXXX?

    Total cost for the parts was around $1200 including clutch kit and new exhaust. The flywheel, I had a spare that I had machined for $40 ahead of time.

      abido14 Yes, In order to change the clutch on a Unimog 404, you must remove the cab and engine.

      abido14 Yep, the way the truck is made, it all must come apart. There are some tricks to make it easier, but I prefer to remove the whole cab. Much easier to get to everything with the cab off.

    Hello, IV just taken on a clutch change job on a unimog and never worked on one before. My background is precision engineering and have done lots of mechanics over the years but these day I tend to stay away from it, bad back but this jobs more a favour and I get to use it for my own projects when done,,,the question is, 1- would u be up for given advice if I get stuck and do u have any pointer in hindsight. I am off to the job now and going to get it out of the field and into his workshops, plus try and hunt out model number as it's a special with a 4 ton have on the back,,, 2- is there a way of doing the clutch from the gear box end? ,. Many thanks john

    • @johnjames8457
      @johnjames8457 ปีที่แล้ว

      Happy to give advice as needed. If its a 404 model Unimog, you have two options for clutch replacement. (Check the frame number on the passenger side of the frame just forward of the axle.. it will contian the model number). On the 404, it is possible to unbolt the engine and slide it forward enough with the body in place to get the clutch changed out, but the best way is to remove the body as there will likely be other things that need to be tended to while the body is off. The way these drivetrains are made, the transmission is an integral part of the suspension since it contains the giant pivots for the torque tubes, which are one half of the 2 link suepnsion, so you cant simply remove it to get to the clutch. On the 404, the transmission and bellhousing also are installed from the top of the frame and wrap around the frame from the top, so cannot be dropped out from underneath. Other models of Unimog wil vary as in the SBUs they reengineered the drivetrain to allow the transmission and clutch R&R from underneath.

    • @desertpir8
      @desertpir8  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hah, yeah, the truck hadn't been run in over 5 years, so the valvetrain was not happy at all. Eventually it ran quite nicely, but ended up blowing the headgasket so I replaced the engine with a new old stock crate engine (see engine replacement video for that one)

    • @regsparkes6507

    gear box from engine not engine from gear box do you guys know any thing ..........

    • @desertpir8
      @desertpir8  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jonathan baker - Blame the late 1940s Unimog design. The newer Unimogs are much easier to maintain. hah

    • @windypup8363
      @windypup8363 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jonathan baker You cant because you cant take the prop shafts off as they are in tubes unless you drop the back axle off to slide the tubes off to get to the flange bolts. So it has to be engine from gear box. Its how I did the clutch on my moggy.

    • @desertpir8
      @desertpir8  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mark hunsberger The truck uses a special rope rear main seal that is prone to leaking. It wasn't leaking, so I left it alone.

    • @desertpir8
      @desertpir8  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +mark hunsberger - It is now 2 years after doing the clutch job and rear main seal is holding well. The truck now has 50,000 km on it and gets driven regularly to shows, events, and the grocery store.
