The Jaguar, a magnificent and ferocious big cat that originates from the Americas. Its name is derived from the languages of the native peoples of Amazonia and means ‘true beast’. But the Jaguar has another name - Panthera onca. This is its Latin binomial name, but why does it have one? What does it mean? Find out in this episode, as David explores how biologists classify life on earth.

One of the best basic taxonomy videos I've seen. Well done!
My favorite Latin name is Lota lota, commonly known in the United States as a burbot, eel pout, or lawyer... it's a freshwater ancestor of the cod fish!
Quality of your production is admirable
Great video Eco! Subbed and liked!! I used this with my middle school science class and they loved it, but most importantly they all 'got it!'.
Thank you so much for actually explaining the species name correctly (as a binomial)!
i think your explanation and leady me to get a good mark in my first year zoology class
That drone fly is throwing it @1:46
Really good -- thanks for making this!
+Rand S Thanks very much, glad you like it!
Thanks, this cleared my doubts regarding the topic. :D
A pleasant day, I use some video clip of this explanation but only for education purposes and it is for my project Thank You, credit to you sir❤️❤️❤️
This is the 1st time the tribe is taught to me and been taught a lot of this topic!!!
This is going to help me a lot in Zoology
Super help full!!!
Thanks a lot sir

+Damid Alvarez Hi, thanks very much, you might want to check out our other taxonomy videos: th-cam.com/play/PLp6PtBTvANvS71h6YZq5Kd7EXXgSSJQCX.html
Great job! I love you tried to go into the tribes & series. Its very confusing the unofficial ranks. Like when i learned invertebrates isnt a real classification anymore.
An ever-changing of trying to put life into categories boxes - it will always be problematic
my science teacher showed us this. she said "now listen to the young nice British man." everyone laughed and mocked his accent except for my boyfriend and I. I remember saying "ooh he's British I love England!" my boyfriend covered up my eyes and pulled me close then said "no Jolie, you don't need to like him."
As someone who is British,
I'm not that offended. I don't speak for everyone tho lol
Lol
This was a well explained video but I feel that is something I should point out , Jaguar (Panthera onca) have only one living subspecies now as modern mDNA shows, while leopard (Panthera pandus) do have 8 or so recognised subspecies, which you defiantly used here with those illustrations, so I think you guys might have got them a wee bit confused. Still a nice video and Really enjoyed the simple explanation on taxonomy, which confuses a lot of people
It's a really good point Joe. That is now true. At the time of making this video we recognised between 8-9 subspecies. But since then, with the inclusion of more detailed analysis and modern techniques, we now have a more accurate picture. But yes we agree the video still makes the point for an overview of the system.
nice!!!
Great
love love love!!!!
Any definition of the taxonomic ranks by themselves independent of other ranks? It seems we are using the examples but not trying to define the ranks by themselves standing alone.
Olfu valenzuela here hhehe module is life
HAHAHHA 🙋
My office is going to be delighted to be asked, “Do koalas prefer chocolate or fruit, generally speaking?” I don’t think I need to tell them why I’m asking. Do you?
Shoutout sa mga taga OLFU dyan hehe
this is probably the most handsome guy ive seen explain taxonomy

Not interested in hearing Darwinian religion. Religion and science do not mix.
