In the Keeling Islands of Australia, there exists a tiny Muslim Malay community known popularly as the Cocos Malays. The Cocos Malays are descendants of ethnic Malay Indentured laborers from Southeast Asia who were brought to the Keeling Islands by British merchants from as early as the 19th century. In the year 1826, the first group of Malays were transported from modern-day Indonesia and Malaysia to the Keeling Islands by Alexander Hare, a prominent English merchant who sought to establish private plantation settlements on the Islands. In later years, the Scottish merchant John Clunies-Ross took over the Keeling Islands and imported more ethnic Malays to the Islands. The Malays were tasked with planting and harvesting Coconuts in the Islands' vast coconut palm plantations. The Malays were also involved in the production of copra, which is the dried kernel of coconuts that is used in the production of coconut oil. The Clunies-Ross family ruled the Keeling Islands as a private fiefdom for almost 150 years and paid the Malay laborers in a local currency known as the Cocos rupee. The Cocos rupee was minted exclusively by the Clunies-Ross family and could only be used in the only store on the Islands. In the year 1955, the Keeling Islands became an official territory of the Commonwealth of Australia, however, the Islands still remained under the control of the Clunies-Ross family. In the year 1978, the Australian government forced the Clunies-Ross family to sell the Keeling Islands for a sum of over six million Australian dollars and fully integrated the Islands with Australia in the year 1984. The Cocos Malays speak a dialect of the Malay language known locally as Basa Pulu Kokos. Basa Pulu Kokos is closely related to the Betawi Malay language of Indonesia and is heavily influenced by English, Scots, and Javanese. Here is a short sample of Basa Pulu Kokos being casually spoken. The Cocos Malays primarily adhere to the Sunni branch of the Islamic faith and are regarded as the oldest Muslim community in Australia.
