The captain gives one of the clearest, most lucid and informative commentaries I’ve ever seen on a cockpit video. He should be on TV. Because of SAA’s appalling reputation, I have avoided flying with them in recent years. But it’s encouraging to know that there are still such experienced and competent world-class pilots working for them.
i flew SAA July 2019, short before going bankrupt, was so surprised by the flight crew and food, much better than Swiss Lufthansa Air France, but I see they starting to fly again internationally in Oct 20203. i will not take that chance now , after them being offline for so long, they will be using an outdated A340 which if i am right is around 10 years old, and could be wrong, but barring that, with the bad performance of SAA technical staff i will not fly with them again, as its mostly ethnic group who do the maintenance, if one sees the bad state the country is in now, but when was this flight done, do u think it was in 2022 ???????

@@longhairwhocares hehe yes I agree 💯😊😊💡💡💡 yes but what is not maintained by a ethnic group in South Africa, very little is done by qualified artisans anymore,I'm surprised when I look at Flightradar 24 during the day time how many airplane ✈️🛫 are in the air or on the ground in South Africa and no accidents happen, exspecially with ATC and ground staff

SAA Pilots are known to be very professional about procedures and rules. I’m proud of that. I hope our airline survives.

I worked at Perth Airport for 7 years and have fond memories of my time there, including seeing the SAA A340 land.
I Miss the old days, early 90's i still remember the 747's flying over my school in Boksburg approaching rwy 03R FAOR. Seeing the Jumbo fully configured Full flaps and landing gear sparked my Passion for aviation.

When he said that some of his colleagues also observed the southern lights in the Antarctica region, I was like this is a privilege. I can quote this man over and over again. Getting goosebumps whenever I watch this video. What have we done to deserve such a best commentary? Bon voyage captain, your entire flight crew and the passengers.
The Captain is a great great teacher. He should be training future pilots full time. I mean I am professional doctor but I felt like I was in a proper Aviation Medicine class. 🎉
Competent world-classed pilots. And so on point with their pre flight information. Great, humble men.
But I'm sure after 1994 it went downwards, as since 2018 on two flights near mishaps occurred .in 2018 over Switzerland the plane nearly went into a mid-air stall due to the flight captain Rouge behaviour, when upon further investigation it was found the first officer was not a fully qualified first Captain but still a co-pilot as he lied about his hours flown, and in 2022 on the flight Dakar Jan Smuts, it limped back home with a full flight, due to bad fuel onboard,

SAA aviators were known to be amongst the best in the world. Their training and professionalism superb. This is testament to who and what they are . Its been a pleasure !!
that was before 1994, after 94 the quality dropped im sure, as in 2018 was a big story about the flight from Jan Smuts en route to Frankfurt, over Switzerland when the pilot who after the investigation was found not a qualified first captain did a funny manoeuvre during mid-air, on 3 occasions while flying the stunts he died nearly caused the flight to stall, and again the flight from Dakar to Jan Smuts in 2022 when it limped back home due to the bad quality of fuel on board, ,but funny enough i flew SAA in July 2019 shortly before going into so-called business rescue,i flew Munich Jan Smuts and was so surprised on the quality of food and the friendly flight crew in comparison to SWiis Lufthansa stuck up crew and really bad food, yes even during WW2 SA pilots were of the best,

i flew SAA --Munich to Jan Smuts in July 2019, was an excellent flight and good crew, only to find out in 2021 about the near mid-air stall of the flight from Jan Smuts to Frankfurt, as the plane on 3 occasions nearly went into a stall due to pilot error, him forcing the nose of the plane upwards ,

Excellent cockpit video by Just Planes, one of the best I've seen. It's nice to see a thorough flight crew giving a clear explanation whenever they do something. I've also realised watching this video that fuel planning is very important, wheather you have a tailwind or not and I was very interested when the captain spoke about how the route changes depending on season due to the jetstreams and trade winds.
This video also shows that the A340 isn't always underpowered but rather that the pilots decided to use FLX thrust instead of TOGA (which was a feature on the A340 to preserve engine life amongst other things such as fuel) The -600's were worse due to higher costs to maintain the RR Trent engines!
This particular airframe, ZS-SXD with the 2012 Olympics livery, was always a regular at Heathrow along with their 600's and if you were lucky, their ageing A340-200's. This variant is the rare A340-313E which I was fortunate to have travelled on one with Air Mauritius from LHR-MRU and back again. The 'E' stood for 'Enhanced' and one of the many Enhancements was a retrofit for the CRT screens to LCD ones. Also it had a higher MTOW then the -313 and -313x.
Lastly, if anyone was wondering why South African never opted for the 777 but rather the A340, it was due to the A340 having much better 'Hot and High' performance which was key for an airline that operated out of South Africa. The A340 also burns slightly less fuel on takeoff that a 777 in this case. One of my favourite airliners which is rapidly disappearing from our skies but at least we have JustPlanes, who can remind us ,through their cockpit videos, of the glory years when these rare aircraft operated!
One thing I still don't quite understand is why the engines aren't stared individually but in twos, i.e like in the video: starting engines 1 & 2 they starting 3 & 4 Is it probably due to the bleed air? Can anyone shed light on this?

I remember being In the 340- 600 as a kid going to Mauritius in 2004. I was so taken away by the length and realness of it. That's what got me into aviation.
Currently a student pilot, it's hard, not much progress made but I'm determined to reach 50 hours by the end of next Feb.
So sad to see these go. I always hoped one day I'd get to fly this.. More than the 747 or a380.. Heart stolen

The cockpit is so beautiful on the A340!And on Airbus planes in general,and the A350 cockpit as the most beautiful of all airplanes, in commercial traffic!
I watch for incoming flights here in Perth, even have some binoculars to check out the livery and close details ( geeky of me) that is quite a long haul journey across the Indian ocean.

Travelled a lot on Virgin Atlantic A340s. They are huge planes but with small engines that were really built for smaller aircraft. They used to take up most of the runway to takeoff with a very slow climb.

This is an old video from 2016 I believe. Unfortunately, SAA terminated this route.
So sad. The demise of one of the World's greatest airlines through greed and corruption from unqualified people allowed to run this airline in to the ground. I hope the South African Government brings these people responsible to book with some serious jail sentences !

The South African government, the ministers and the President in particular are responsible for the bad management and the downfall of a great airline for they have selected and appointed the management staff at South African Airways which obviously was not up to managing the airline in a profitable manner.
The buck stops with the chief in command and he is ultimately responsible for all the ministers under him right down to the most junior government employee and that goes for all SOE’s.
The South Africa SOE’s fare so badly because those that are entrusted into managements positions has proofed by virtue of their poor financial statements that they can’t run their SOE at profit.
I thought you described the SA government in your comment, can’t expect anything good from them.

This captain is very intelligent and observant. When he noticed that they were about to hit a forecasted air turbulence, he checks the nearby alternate destination which in this case was Madagascar, he even notes the distance from where they were to Madagascar which gave him the total of 600 miles. This is very interesting though😢😢. Air turbulence can pose a significant risk and already in his mind, he is thinking of safety and part of that is to know a nearby alternate airport which they can deviate to and when he mentions a distance of 600 miles to reach Madagascar, I got goosebumps .Shuuuuuu!😭😭😭
I felt it when a captain gave first officer a handshake for working together by flying this bird from Johannesburg to Perth. That was so emotional to watch😭😭😭😭. I was also impressed by that part in Johannesburg where a controller clears them to turn left and head to an entry point for Johannesburg oceanic, when a plane started banking to the left, it was so cool watching captain looking at the turn through an artificial horizon instrument😂😂😂. Yes it was a night flight but this goes to show that pilots trust their instruments to accurately map the behaviour of the plane. What a video!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

Great Video and commentary. Good insights into good cockpit crew communication and coordination and a skillful landing. It would have earned even better remarks if the third crew member's inputs were heard in flight ; he was their third pair off eyes and ears and made a couple of good catches on both the NOTAMS and the total fuel burn rate.He lterally disappeared from view and from sight and it became a solely two crew operation after that. Great support from the knowedgeable and alert Senior FO.Control transfer as well as the radios should have been made to the FO during the Capain's PA. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire video and that landing technique considering it was a not so long runway was pure experience on display.Well done Crew and a well deserved rest and sight seeing in Perth.I look forward to landing there one day myself before I clock out of the cockpit! Over and out!

What a sad but joyful memory of our flagship airline. Being down to 3 A319, 2 A320, 1 A333 and 1 A343 operational fleet, it is so painful to comprehend. If miracles do work, it's time so SAA can go back back to its state of glory days!
