You can say what you want about the end result and the directing of the prequels, but as far as effort and creativity they are possibly the best movies of the saga. Visually, George Lucas is a genius
"George didn't want to just make things bigger for biggness sake" And man, speaking of George, he looked really tired at the end. Like he'd just got to his hotel room at the end of shooting and then dragged him out again to do these featurettes.
+Octavio89 Just because you hate does not mean does not mean all hate it, for me I love all the Star Wars films, they all have the charm to it. People have been complaining to long and even the so called "fans" are upset that Disney will ruin Star Wars, for me the haters first don't make sense and are a bunch of whiny brats.
+Octavio89 the phantom menace is many star wars fans favorite movie. I love the phantom menace, it indeed is very beautiful aesthetically. it has an amazing soundtrack, good plot, amazing action scenes, visually stunning. besides some bad child acting, an annoying side character, and a few other flaws, its not a pile of shit like you nerds make it out to be
"I think George really wanted to come up with a new idea because he didn't want to build something bigger than the last film to make a statement about bigness. I think he wanted something, a look that was really interesting." - Rick McCallum This was an important lesson the makers of the Sequel Trilogy forgot.
I always thought that the design of the prequel trilogy was just on another level even compared to the classic first trilogy, and especially comparing it to the current trilogy, whicg has produced no cool new designs for aliens, ships or worlds, they're all just recycled from the priginal trilogy. You would think that Disney would have had more creativity than that.
Disney is a soulless corporation that makes what they believe will sell best. While Lucas did cram a bunch of new, different looking spaceships, droids, aliens, etc. into the prequels to sell more toys, at least he was more open-minded and creative with it.
Oh shoot! I just noticed that we have bonus features on our special edition disks! Whatever....hey at least I’m giving you views and likes, thank you for putting these on here dude :)
Despite the many failings of Phantom Menace as a movie, the design work is awesome. Doug Chiang's work never fails to impress. Thanks for uploading this.
Honestly, I think people didn't like this movie not because it was bad, because our was a pretty good storyline. They didn't like it because it was different, so it was shocking at first, but after you think about it for a while, it makes sense and it's a good movie (minus Jar Jar).
The Jedi refused to take him "no he will not be trained". They did not care for Anakin at all, and Qui-Gon was forced to take him with him, and probably resolve the issue with Anakin after the Naboo crisis had he lived. Qui-Gon in all likelihood would have been forced to return Anakin to Tatooine
I'm not a big fan of the prequel movies, but one thing I can really respect is the unique architecture that goes into the buildings, vehicles, weapons and clothing of every planet, as well as the logic behind it all (the Naboo fighters being sleek and shiny because the Naboo were crappy fighters and just liked aesthetics, everything in the EMpire being boxy and utilitarian, etc.).
"I think George really wanted to come up with a new idea... he didn't want to build something bigger than the last film to make a statement about bigness." This is where the sequels failed. If they were really made passionately, we wouldn't have something so unoriginal as a Starkiller Base or the First Order.
Yeah. Well, some of the other Episode I Featurettes also show clips from A New Hope. And they also display 'Star Wars: "A New Hope" (1977)' on the screen. I think they just display it on any clips from A New Hope, whether it's a Special Edition shot or unaltered scenes.
see even doug chiang said George wanted the ships sleeker and more 'mordern'. which doesn't make a lot of sense cause the events in these movies r taking place 18 years before the events in the original. a lot of the gadgets and tech we see in this film looks way more advanced than Wat we see in 4,5 and 6.
+Wwe Superfan The concept is "paradise lost". The Republic was once great, we see its downfall. The Empire was a step backwards, they kept technological advances for themselves (for projects like the Death Star) but their design aesthetic was utilitarian, which illustrates the totalitarian nature of the government for the audience. Makes perfect sense. It is also a mythological concept, that the past as a lost "golden age"--many fantasists use this same trope such as Tolkien. Jordan and others; and it exists in most mythologies (Greek, Indian, Iranian etc.).
+Wwe Superfan it makes a whole bunch of sense and its baked up by history. It's America before the Great Depression, the good times before the bad times. In the beginning of the 19th century before WW1, everything that was designed was more elegant and symbolized the craftsmanship of the people who made it. That era is referred to as the gilded age and it was in this time that things like the titanic were made. Then when war broke out everything was mass produced so the unique and elegant designs were replaced by what was easier to make as fast as possible.
4:47 there's your problem right there. Star Wars is character driven, not plot driven. This is why Empire is considered the best because it has the least plot but the most character development. This is also why Force Awakens succeeds where the prequels utterly failed - the characters and character development took a back seat to silly plots and pretty environments.
It's a big job to make a movie, hell even a short film. Someone needs to have a vision, then it goes down to supervisors, the individual directors. There's a lot of supervisors and directors and artists and movies STILL takes like 4 years to complete. Also, people specialize. So the art directors focus on their work, the director focuses on the big picture of the movie, all to get this task done in a reasonable amount of time.
It was the ultimate movie that became its own universe. People want more of the same just bigger if the original was seen as perfect by so many. If someone was going to make Michelangelo's david sculpture better, they would just make it bigger for more people to see the minute details of what make it so great, and to make it the same spectacle for the younger, newer generation that it was for the old. if its just more of the old who cares, but if its "new and improved" of something great of the old then everyone will give it a shot, whether they end up hating it or not. The main problem is george lucas is not Michelangelo. Only the original genius could truly "add" to the original. People falsely believed it was george when the reality is that star wars was a group project, and was only so amazing because of the devotion of tons of talented people. George is no genius. It was everyone else who was the genius, george was just the name on the project who okay'd the right things at the time. He isnt a fool, but he is far from an artistic genius with vision. Its everyone else who made it coherent and incredible to the public. Try watching the uncut version of star wars and you can see where George's dated mentality and lack of vision is blatant. If george had his reign with A new hope like he did on episode 1, it would have been as forgettable and dated as any other sci-fi.
True. Even though Lucas has some passion in making the films, but in the prequels it just ended up (to him) being a money spinning business gone to his head.
+amaxamon As a creative, I get the feeling that Lucas would be the best kind of boss. He seems to want everyone to explore their own dreams. As long as it works with his vision and makes sense, he runs with it. He's a man who (from my point of view) seems to appreciate and respect the creativity of the individual.
all these promissing designs (Naboo looks like italian Renaissance with modern technology, for example; Coruscant is Manhattan in the 30th Century) ruined by Jar Jar and Ben Burtt's annoying sound effects
Doug Chiang is a master designer! the naboo fighter is absolutely stunning!
He’s a great guy!
I think he’s crap, devoid of any originality or imagination. There are far better designers available.
You can say what you want about the end result and the directing of the prequels, but as far as effort and creativity they are possibly the best movies of the saga. Visually, George Lucas is a genius
Nah the films were great. Most of the nerds that cried about these films were talking bs. These movies are the best.
"George didn't want to just make things bigger for biggness sake"
And man, speaking of George, he looked really tired at the end. Like he'd just got to his hotel room at the end of shooting and then dragged him out again to do these featurettes.
That line virtually throws shade at the Sequels
It's big shame that this movie wasn't nomintad for Oscar for the desingn. Whole of the Star Wars universe is unbelievable!
@donnyfrom hackney This movie came out in the late 90's. The CGI was pretty great for it's time.
hollywood hates george lucas because george lucas isnt part of hollywood...
@@marcoslopez_ Still is surprisingly convincing at various points.
Im so damn happy I got to experience these films when they released. George is Legendary.
You're damn lucky
What I love about the prequels is the world building. Disneys sequel trilogy just feel so lacking in comparison.
Well, George Lucas wasn't wrong when he said Star Wars Ep7 didn't have any new. When they first show the finish cut of the film to him.
One of the most beautiful films ever made. All the hatred directed at George and the makers of this film is insane.
+Octavio89 Did I solicit your worthless opinion, shit-head? MInd your own business instead of trolling comments on YT, fucko.
+Octavio89 Dear Troll - Do the world a favor and stop existing.
+Octavio89 Just because you hate does not mean does not mean all hate it, for me I love
all the Star Wars films, they all have the charm to it. People have been complaining to long and even the so called "fans" are upset that Disney will ruin Star Wars, for me the haters first don't make sense and are a bunch of whiny brats.

How is your opinion a fact?
The Phantom Menace might be in my top three, I loved seeing the universe when it was mostly at peace
Peace is a lie!
LOVE the designs, especially Naboo. And even though I'm not the biggest fan of Jar Jar Binks or the Gungans, I do love the design of the Gungan city.
"I think George really wanted to come up with a new idea because he didn't want to build something bigger than the last film to make a statement about bigness. I think he wanted something, a look that was really interesting."
- Rick McCallum
This was an important lesson the makers of the Sequel Trilogy forgot.
Disney literally just created a bigger Death Star. Yawn
I always thought that the design of the prequel trilogy was just on another level even compared to the classic first trilogy, and especially comparing it to the current trilogy, whicg has produced no cool new designs for aliens, ships or worlds, they're all just recycled from the priginal trilogy. 6:04-this caught my attention. A lot of scrapped ideas can be reused like refitted for a follow-up, another series or remake.
Pure Genius!!!
¿Pero retro qué haces aquí? ¿Viendo las maravillas de nuestro gran maestro Lucas?
@giobbecovattacol These videos are from the bonus disc that came with the movies. Thanks for the nice comments :)
Oh shoot! I just noticed that we have bonus features on our special edition disks! Whatever....hey at least I’m giving you views and likes, thank you for putting these on here dude :)
So much more love and beauty went into the prequels compared to the sequels.
Sad they could have done so much and n 3 movies.
Despite the many failings of Phantom Menace as a movie, the design work is awesome. Doug Chiang's work never fails to impress. Thanks for uploading this.
There were no failings, its a classic.
Thank you! Keep 'em coming:D
Merry Christmas

mranderson0001 where do you find all these amazing vids? I mean... you are just the man! :D Real big thanks! :D
Rick McCallum is the ultimate hype man and he does it by accident/genuinely believing in the project.

Quality not quantity is what the difference between 1,2,3 and 7,8,9.
Jar Jar is the key to all this
Dude, take a break for hollyday! and Merry christmas!
Nice!!
2:32 Title card says: Star Wars A New Hope 1977.
Sequence shows: Special Edition alteration from 1997.
Yeah. Well, some of the other Episode I Featurettes also show clips from A New Hope. And they also display 'Star Wars: "A New Hope" (1977)' on the screen. I think they just display it on any clips from A New Hope, whether it's a Special Edition shot or unaltered scenes.
@Regelegorila Thanks dude, back at ya.
I think someone was really a Dinotopia fan.
Now if only the acting was as good as the designs. Then we would have a great movie on our hands!
The acting was actually better than in the Original Trilogy.
With that neck he could have been stronger than Brock Lesnar
People doesn't aprecciate this.
dave feloni get"s him

Well it takes place during a more economically prosperous and free period. Take Roman age vs the dark ages.

+atarileaf Who's the main character in Ep. 1? Is it Qui gon jinn? Obi wan? Anakin? I don't know, but I do know that its awesome.
+atarileaf Episode 1 is certainly more plot driven than character driven, but who cares? it was good, not perfect, but good.
Billy Blaster you're joking right
Dan Jun Episode 1 had more plot than the original star wars movie.
Rey is NOT a mary sue.
So...George did NO design work and just showed up and said yes or no to what work others have done? And takes credit.
...that's what most movie directors do.
No! George Made drawings before he even wrote the prequels, he just had designers flesh out his ideas and add their own designs.
It's a big job to make a movie, hell even a short film.

Ben Masta If you’re looking for a cash-grab, watch the new trilogy...
Hope they got paid well for putting up so much crap frm u know who.
+alexander dela cruz Yeah crap like "be totally creative and and come up with your best and I'll put it on screen"--what a terrible man!
+amaxamon As a creative, I get the feeling that Lucas would be the best kind of boss. He seems to want everyone to explore their own dreams. imbecilik Amen.
imbecilik I agree.
Another moronic opinion. This is creativity working and Lucas is a master in that, there is not doubt on thar.
Maybe one of the problems with this movie was that it was overdesigned. The visuals were just too perfect--lacked character.
Really. Overdesigned?
all these promissing designs (Naboo looks like italian Renaissance with modern technology, for example; Coruscant is Manhattan in the 30th Century) ruined by Jar Jar and Ben Burtt's annoying sound effects
