Me too dislike the stands, kind of out of proportion, the vertical posts will look better both moving an inch in inwards while the base and suport remains the same. Now it looks odd as Kristi said, and I describe it as and fat/short look.
What I would LOVE TO HEAR (reviewed) is placing some AR-3a vs Model 5 ....... don't get mad or call me JUST OLD PERSON Stuff, but I'd like to hear someone check out a kind of speaker technique used in the past measured by what sounds like a reintroduction of a known Speaker science.
Hey Andrew, I bought a pair of these speakers based partly on your review, not because your review was without criticisms (it obviously wasn’t), but because you provided exactly the information I needed in order to make that decision. I was looking for speakers that could do double duty for stereo music and movies, that could play well at low volumes (the majority of my listening), that were not too finicky about placement, and that could be adequately driven (to moderate volumes in a small room) by a 55-60 watt amp. You gave all this info in your review. Even the primary negative - that their main weakness is filling a large room with bass at high volume - was helpful information, because that is not my use-case, so I was able to rule that out as a problem for me. (BTW I got them from your buddies at Just Audio for $1200 a pair including the stands, so that also helped make the decision for me!). So, I want to thank you for your high-quality, engaging, and usefully informative reviews.
I purchased the Model 5s and am very happy. The articulation of music they are capable of is exquisite. The 5s are unlikely to let you fall asleep in your Lazyboy stool, because they reveal the musicality of performances wonderfully. I have yet to put the speaker up to stadium level because of the sheer energy it can put out. Good power will also deliver good tone. Tone or timbres are absolutely spot on on the model 5s. Since the model 3 does the same in smaller spaces, and at lower listening levels, I am sure loads of people will be joyful to have the model 3. If you are a bass head buy a sub, if not, KLHs grow on you. My partner is a heavy metal lover, but she never asks me to play these speakers really loud. The sound is so vivid and the power needed to create a hard rock experience does not require blowing the walls down. The model 5s are fuller than the Linton Heritage, and far more joyous than the KEF LS50 metas because of this voicing. Check these speakers out. They are great
@@TheJohnnyNeat Not needed. I was an opera singer for 15 years and have sung with huge orchestras. I sang operas by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Live music sounds like a live volcano, a subterranean fire. The Model 5s capture music, they do not replay it in a melancholic darkened manner where detail is braided to being fuzzy instead of focused. The alive quality of music is the real deal. Many have picked up Lintons based on Andrew and Kristi's recommendation and couldn't be happier. I personally believe they recommended them over the KLH, to protect listeners who, own ear-splitting, and badly recorded rock'n roll. They also still recommend the KLHs and marvel at their lack of fussiness and performance. The KLH Model 5s have been sold out almost continually since their release. I am very pleased to own them.
Happy Sunday. I definitely would pick the Model 5 over the Model 3 not because they are bigger, they are easier to drive and will open up the options for different amps. I have to give it to you and Kristi. So far this is the first review I’ve seen on TH-cam. Kudos.
Just took delivery of my Model 5’s last week and I’ve been playing them non stop in our living room. The wife is starting to get annoyed 😂 But they sound absolutely amazing and look great in our space. Love you both and keep up the great work. Btw, really dig your new place 👌🏻👏🏻
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Right now, probably not. But you never know 😉 I’m using the 5’s strictly for music, but I can imagine using a 3 as a center would make for some incredible movie watching
@@andrewrobinsonreviews If you had an older integrated like I do (Moon i-3) which is a line-only amp, what would you do to set up this as a home theater rig? I am concerned about lagtime and if the DAC will produce latency issues. If a person does not buy a new amp, what is a person to do? My older amp has only analog inputs.
It seems to me, after listening to this review, that the Model 3 might be the "missing link" in a KLH 5.0 setup. I think you had the right idea using the Model 3 as a center channel. Use the Model 5's for L & R mains, and get two more Model 3's for surrounds, and there you have it. No subwoofer needed, as you point out. You guys are doing a great job with these videos. Hope you are enjoying that wonderful new home!
Great review as always. I picked up Lintons based on your and Christy's agreement and couldn't be happier. You are my favorite reviewer because you focus on value and diminishing returns. No one else just comes out and says its not worth overpaying for certain brands of vintage type speakers when KLH, Wharedale, Magnate, etc. offer such great value. I'm running quite a variety of front end gear ( as2200 (per Christy), denon 4806, Pioneer reference blue ray, Sony ES SACD, denon tt with ortofon black ( per Andrew), Doge 7 dac with telefunken tubes rolled in) and while the lintons always retain their character, different dacs can make them sound more dynamic and detailed. Most of us don't have the opportunity to try a variety of speakers and the info you provided allowed me to save money on speakers AND not feel like I'm missing much by not dropping 2 or 3 times the money for JBL, Klipsch, McCintosh, etc. There are different classes of course, but within similar products among diff brands, more money doesn't automatically equate to better sound. My old speakers were more expensive (at the time) KEF R300's and I still like them but prefer the overall voicing and scale I get with the larger Lintons so I upgraded to less expensive mains
For me prices are close enough to just go with the model 5's , plus knowing my room size, definitely the 5's. Using the 3 as a center channel was a cool idea. Great review.
I was dreaming about Model 5 until I saw Model 3. I have a smallish listening room and 5 would have been a little too big although I love the look of them. At decent listening levels and thinking about the aesthetics of room size vs speaker size, I think Model 3 are perfect for me.
thank you for trying this out as center speaker . Because of this review i am now deciding between a Polk R200 Atmos setup with the R400 center , or a KLH Model 3 lcr setup in a VERY SMALL room . I will decide how important Atmos is to me when i make my decision . Normally the tweeter attenuation wouldn't matter to me , but in a small very reflective room it could be the deciding factor as well . Paired with a couple of capable subs for sure as well
Thanks! Question- I’ve got the rotel A11 tribute, but noticed you didn’t use it in the review of the model 3s. Thinking about getting the Model 3’s. Will the tribute be a good match to power them? Thanks again. Your stuff is super helpful!
The A11 Tribute should power the Model 3s fine. It may have some headroom difficulty if you want to reach volumes greater than about 90dB but it wouldn't stop me from trying them together.
Ordered a pair of 3’s first thing this morning! Been waiting for these since that teaser video last year. For my TINY office I felt the Model 5 would be too much so the Triangle Bro3 has been my stopgap, and they have been surprisingly awesome. I’m hoping my Denon PMA-600 does as well with the Model 3 as it has with the Bro3.
@@greganderson9618 I'm familiar with Borea in that I demoed Borea 2. I have Triangle Plaisir which I liked better but the Borea were designed to present a larger soundstage and in my opinion at the expense of some tonality accuracy. Focal did the same thing with their lines Chorus V series vs W series. I have Focal 807Ws also which give greater detail and dynamic punch. Trying to decide if I want to change, larger, smaller, etc., and the KLH presents a different concept for "standmount" especially if it sounds more like a larger speaker without sacrificing tonality. So, interested to hear your findings especially in the areas of tonality, instrument separation and stage depth and at more moderate to low listening levels. Thanks.
@@nc3419 Well I’ve been running these for the last 5 or 6 days with the Denon PMA-600 and I think they are just a bad pairing. I found the Triangle/Denon pairing really enjoyable and even though I half expected I might want a better amp, I’m pretty disappointed that I’m actually enjoying the Model 3’s LESS using that amp. Hoping that a new amp makes them sing for me.. my wife LOVES the M3’s aesthetics so I’d like them to work out. Haha.
@@greganderson9618 It's possible the KLH Model 3 isn't your cup of tea regardless of amp. There's some speakers I just didn't like regardless of receiving great reviews. For one, the Quad S2.
I was so excited for this review! Yesss. Still haven’t heard the 3’s or 5’s but I’d like to if I get the chance. Probably will just stick with my walnut finish Lintons’s though as I’ve been pretty happy with them. Still loving that new room and decor.
Hey Andrew! I am Nikos from Athens Greece. I heard the 3s a week ago , and they sound fantastic to me, a very deep, warm and crystal sound!! If a had the money i would get them tomorrow! I am very impressed!!
Me personally, I'd go with the 3. I have a 11x12 two-channel listening room and i often listen at night when my kids are asleep. IOW, i wont be cranking it too much. Oh, and i always use a sub in my system as well as I'm of the belief that few loudspeakers are truly full-range at this price point.
Thank you for your review of the KLH model 5 and 3. Both are currently on sale. I would opt for the 5's but I just don't have room. My set of 3's should arrive sometime next week.
It's my understanding, at least with the KLH Model 5 and perhaps the Model 3 that the tilt of the stand is absolutely necessary for the speakers to sound as good as they do and placement on a level stand actually degrades the SQ. So, no choice but to use the stands, which isn't bad, it's the design. Now, if you live in an apartment and limit sound pressure to more moderate levels, does the difference between the 5s and 3s diminish? Sure, the Model 5 should improve the mids and lows being a well designed 3 way. But for a two way, it seems at its' price point, it may be a good option particularly if compared to speakers in a range from Focal Chora, Dynaudio Emits and even Monitor Audio Silvers. Any comparisons to those? Given the price difference of about $1600, the SQ between the Model 3 to 5 should be commensurate between the two. Perhaps at lower volumes, the differences are less? Especially if the bass remains tight although less? There's alot of $$$ left over foe a sub, be it used or new, and whether necessary. As to looking odd...look at Klipsch Heresy. Seems about similar, squatty looking and tilted. At the now $2500 price, there alot of competition from Bucchardt among others. At $900, the competition seems pretty slim. Responds better to more powerful amps? What if you only need a few watts and enough headroom so a lower power amp that is well designed could be enough. It may be more a current thing than watts as the two don't always mesh. Hence why a 20 watt amp can outperform a 100 watt amp, more to it than that but essentially the case. Question is, in trying to decipher through all the poetically waxed review (which isn't bad per se), I am trying to denote exactly how these two models are similar, how they are different and where the 3s do not quite keep up with the 5s. It could be the other way around too. So...this review stills leaves me wondering a bit of how to describe or expect those differences/similarities to be and how the 3s could be a better solution given the step up to the 5s.
I’m guessing that he threes with a sub would require a high pass filter on the mains to tame that tubbiness from the woofers. Very thorough review again. Great work!
About to take delivery of my Nad M10 and KHL Model 3. The excitement is killing me! Your reviews really help my decision making. Thank you for your professional approach. Keep on keeping on….all the best from Australia 🇦🇺
@@chrisveltman1795 The M10 has got some serious power and the Three's handle it with ease (until the upper DCBs). A friend is going to bring over the Rel T7 sub, which I fear will ruin me! The bass on the Three's actually surprised me and I feel a sub will just help seperate and smooth out the mid to bass imaging (just because of 2 way). It will be an interesting experience. I have a small/mid room and with my current set-up it is fantastic. If a sub makes it better, I will be blown away. I recommmend the Three's to anyone with similar size room. Thanks for enquiring...
My Favorite 2 way (back in the day) was the AR-7. ... While I was in the Service (72-74) my room was filled with several Audio systems. My friend and roommate bought a HUGE Sansui speaker (it was like a 7-way configuration) and he would bother me about how good they were.... so, ONE DAY I disconnected his speakers and put my LITTLE AR-7s on TOP of his Speakers and TURNED THE VOLUME UP. .... When My buddy (Kenny) came to the room I said he was RIGHT as RAIN the Sansui Speakers were GREAT.... and he was GROVING the sound, when I pointed out his Sansui Speakers were disconnected, and he was listening to the 2 Way AR-7. .... I wish I had those speakers today, but HE BEGGED ME TO SELL THEM to him... ....... $71 (the Cost) - it was amazing ....... I REALLY DON'T think the Acoustic Technology are given enough credit for its sound in any of the reviews. I get the feeling that Giving the Technology Credit somehow is demeaning to the younger Generation..... I'm probably wrong, but it is a kind of Prejudice to say something is GREAT and leave the MYSTERY of WHY out of the equation.
QOTD: I’d save my Pennie’s and go with the KLH Model 5’s. That said, after hearing the Polk Reserve 2’s at AXPONA, that is the ticket. $750 a pair, I was impressed with their performance. Keep up the good work. 🤘🏼🎸🤘🏼
Interesting and informative review. I think the idea with the 3’s is not so much a smaller footprint as better integration into a smaller space, as not all of us have medium to large rooms. They are not too far off Dynaco A25’s in size….maybe just a little chunkier looking. Though Dynaco managed to stuff a 10” woofer into their small box.
Thank you. I've been a writer for about 20 years now, though admittedly writing for TH-cam is its own art form. As for writing books, that's not for me, though I've written several screenplays. Thanks for tuning in!
I looked at both, and decided to look into the past. I already owned some KLH 33's and they were ok. I looked at a pair of OG KLH 5's but didn't pull the trigger. Ended up being very happy with a pair of ADS L620's. New condition for $209.
This is a shout out to Kristi, Model 3s unpacked and hooked up for the second time. PMA 900HNE running them, picked it up for my Denton 85ths after Andrews review. After 4hrs running while I was out, I must say these are a treat. Yet they remind me of the Denton 85ths, but bigger much bigger sound. Do they like power. Oh they do. They sound their best with more power Not sure AVR would do them justice. We love hearing your thoughts Kristi, Andrew is so lucky to be with you, most of our better halves hate stereos, mine tolerates it very well. I can see why you like the 3s over the Denton 85ths. But my Dentons are not going anywhere. Thanks for all the hard work. Wow the 3s are coming alive as I type. Suzi Quatro's Sucide.
My local store gave me a deal on the Model 3 for $599 each, so I thought I would give them a try since that fit my budget and I can alway add a subwoofer later.
The Model Three would be a better fit for our living room and we already have a SVS SB-1000 Pro sub, but we're concerned about how much the overall sound would be compromised if we position them (without the stands) horizontally on opposite built-in bookcases. Advice?
So what you are saying, but didn't initially say, is the 3's are for smaller rooms than yours. In a smaller room, their bass won't be trying so hard to fill the room and in a smaller room, the room would limit the bass extension of a model 5 to that of a model 3. Finally, if you compare $ for $ with JBL, the L52 is the Model 3 direct comparison. My guess, is, acoustically, the 3's would trounce e the L52's.
Great review and loved that you brought the Dentons into the mix. I was souring on the D’s until I matched them with the Hegel H95. Suddenly they retrieved details that I didn’t they were capable of. But I can still why they wouldn’t match up to the model 3s. How would the Dentons match up with Lumina 2s?
Love y’all’s new set up. Beautiful job and thanks for sharing some of your journey to get there. If I am reading your notes correctly you tested the speakers with 3 receivers. If so did the receiver themselves make a much of a difference?
We tested them with more than just three amps/receivers, though three are directly mentioned here. They're not really amplifier critical, though the amps with 50+ Watts did seem to bring out the best in them.
500$ a piece on sale for the model 3s means you could buy 3 for your HT front stage and a monolith 10” sub for the price of the model 5s. That’s a no brainer to me.
Totally agree. I recently bought a pair for $1000 and an Arcam SA20 integrated amp for $1100. The Model 3 sale price allows for some amazing system building!
@@earlyetman5588 you will absolutely love the Model 3’s paired with the SA20. Please make sure you position them about 7 feet apart with an 8 foot listening distance and enjoy. I’m not sure how many hours you have on your speakers, but I have noticed my model threes have gotten better with break-in.
Makes sense when that woofer needs to cover too much range. Good looking speakers! Just when I thought KLH was left in the past they drop the 3 and 5. Kick ass
Hi Andrew and Kristi! Thanks for another always thorough and informative review. I’m wondering how adding a subwoofer to the KLH Model 3 would lighten the load on the power amp and the speakers. Referring to the excellent Marantz 40n, I researched and discovered the 40n only has a lowpass filter on the sub output, unlike a HT receiver which invariably have both high pass and low pass filters. Which means, when driving a pair of speakers and a subwoofer off the Marantz 40n, the main speakers driven by the 40n will receive a full range signal, heavy bass and all, regardless of whether a sub is used or not, meaning the main speakers and amp are pushed equally as hard in either scenario.
Hey guys, love your reviews… really insightful and feel like you up your game about every week these days. I’m currently running the Model 5’s through a Yamaha A-S501 mostly for vinyl listening (and some TV). All in all the Yamaha is a solid amp (you reviewed the 801 awhile back, which is of course similar). Sometimes I’m feeling the need for more bass and maybe a bit of an effortless sound during busier music passages. What would your amp recommendation be in the 2,000ish dollar range based on that? I get the feeling you enjoy the Marantz 40n with the KLH line but i know there are plenty of good amp options out there. Whats the best pairing with the KLH youve heard?
The Marantz is great with the KLH. This is also very good and is well under 2k: amzn.to/398qSrJ (also available here bit.ly/3G5KATV) and I think would be a better match over the Yamaha you currently have.
@@iancooper3460 you can’t go wrong with Audiolab. I personally have Heresy IVs and my first pairing was with a Yamaha A-S701. Bought the Audiolab 6000A and to me it was an improvement. I also love that it sounds just right and I don’t have to adjust treble or bass (you don’t got those options on the Audiolab). I personally pair it with a bluesound node for reference, but overall I’m loving the Audiolab! Shout out to Andrew for introducing me to Audiolab 😎
Excellent review. Congrats on your new digs! I have a difficult choice to make in the upcoming days. Planning a 5.1.2 setup, Focal Chora or KEF Q Series? Could you give me advice?
Kristi doesn't like the Denton 85 because it's a laid back speaker? Strange, 'laid back' means that the treble and mid-range are reduced. However, the Denton 85 has elevated or raised treble and mid-range, so I'm confused. Some of the Denton owners, like me, are trying to tame the treble by using the resistor hi-fi tweak. Compared to the Denton 85, it's the Lintons that sound laid back.
I love my Denton 85ths, after 60 days they mellowed just enough. I tried the resistor with a very dark sound result. Using a PM 8006 and the denton 85ths are probably what rockers expected their music to sound like. Not some smooth perfection. I had the 3s and sent them back, I just reordered them because I did not take the time with them I should. They easily need at least 30 days of my time to get a real feel for their sound. What stood out was their silence between notes and voices. Like the blackest black on a tv. The silent of the silent. We shall see. The Lintons are tempting but the are all that heavy downer sound, like the Dentons with the resistor. Yes Kristi is off base with the Dentons, they may be cute but my PM 8006 will have you wiping the rock n roll grin off your face.
I kind of regret not buying the 5s before their price increase. Actually, I could’ve bought them at the old price even after the increase was announced and at most vendors, but I had just bought Kef R3s. I probably should’ve have bought them to decide which I preferred.
@@davidjurney The 5's are worth every penny... You honestly do not even need a subwoofer with these if paired with the right gear. When I went with the Denafrips Ares II DAC, the model 5's came alive. They sounded ok with a delta sigma DAC, but the Ares II R2R Ladder DAC gave me that 60's and 70's sound I was looking for. The addition of the Denafrips Class A Hades pre and Thallo amp took the Model 5's to the next level. Much better sound and incredible bass going from solid state and Class D amplification to Class A, a real game changer. It sounds better by the day...
Fun Review Andrew! I appreciate the passion you both bring to these reviews. Question about use of In-Ceiling Sourounds: I heard you say Klipsch In-Ceiling speaker for BOTH SURROUND & ATMOS. That's a very permanent install investment. 1- Do you have a video of that decision and review of option you considered? 2- Which model Klipsch Ceiling speakers did you select? 3- Do you guys have any regrets or desire to change? Say, with the Model 5's as L&R (or Wharfdale Linton's as L&R) and a Model 3 as Center ... do you believe your sub adds value benefit to the 5's or Wharfedale Linton in your Theater? Cheers, Eric
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Thank you. I did see that. I'm sold on my Atmos in ceiling and them them is this home. But for the new home I was intrigued by your use of SURROUND installed in your ceiling... IF I understood correctly? 🤪 Cheers, Eric

You'd think so but they actually take up about as much space as the 5s. They are definitely larger than we expected them to be based on the initial images we saw of them.
@@KristiWright What I meant was that the 3s would be a lot more polite with close neighbors than the 5s. The volume and low base limits probably won't hinder the speaker in that environment and might be a positive if you want the 5 sound.
I think it all depends of the volume you’d be blasting music at. I have Heresy IVs in an apartment and I just try not to go too crazy, if anything my loudest with them is during day time.
I have four original large Advents. I love them! I do enjoy seeing reviews about the model 3’s and model 5’s. the acoustic suspension design is nice.. Great review of the model 5 and Model 3!
@@Flarptube yes! The woofers are intact and I did recap the crossover about 7 years ago. So happy with my “stacked Advents” the crossover recap really opened up the high end expanding the tweeter. They have the original orange “fried egg” style tweeters. if I were buying something new, I’d be the model 5’s. A friend of mine bought them and is very pleased.
Personally I'd look to buy the original vintage model 5. Since I have no problem using equalization I feel that speaker is far more desirable than the new models. Its 12 inch acoustic suspension woofer is more than the equal of the new model 5, comparable to AR3, AR3a, and the original larger Advent. I wouldn't buy a ported speaker myself and acoustic suspension speakers are all I shop for. Lucky man that I am I've got a pair of Teledyne AR9s with tw 12 inch side firing woofers in a four way five driver tower. That was AR's best effort.
I have recently owned a vintage set of the KLH 5, its a very good speaker of the era where its better than a Large Advent but is slotted below an AR3. These new retro speakers like the new 5 and Linton are much more musical and dynamic than the vintage models above, they have more in common with modern speakers but are definitely an easy listen like the vintage models. There is something to be said about a traditional wide baffle speaker design that makes them very easy to place in a room.
I purchased a pair in early July; took a few weeks to break in and now they sound amazing. Andrew is correct- you can run these with anything but I noticed a big difference when I switched from an AVR to a pretty stout integrated amp. Enjoy those 3’s!!
I don't know what happened but the 5s cost € 3.200 here and the 3s € 2.300, the Lintons with stands € 1.300 - so not even the 3s are compareable anymore with the Lintons 😑
At $1,800 they aren't inexpensive, a lot of competition at that price. GoldenEar is never mentioned as comparison, but the Triton 7, same price, and the smaller Aon 3 for $1,100/pair or the BRX, similar price, could be serious contenders IMO, any thoughts?
This one goes to Kristi. You said you don't like laidback sounding speakers, yet Lintons seem to be exactly that, laid back with a lot info missing from midrange and top end. Could you clarify a bit as knowing what reviewer you follow likes makes it easier to understand reviews and opinions on gear in general? Thanks.
Not sure what to say. I don't consider the Linton to be as you described so I guess it comes down to interpretation and personal preference. While I would not describe them as forward (ie B&W 600 series), they aren't veiled/laid back or what I would consider overly neutral (ELAC). Hope that helps.
If I'm checking out an 8" two-way, my first stop would be the Human Speakers Model 81 at $1150 less. Kind of a disappearing breed. There used to be the PSB 500, Paradigm Monitor 3(?), some Roy Allison models and whatever else.
I would like to listen to the KLH model 5 to compare them to my KLH Model 17, AR-2 (and -2ax), and Warfedale W70-E’s. I would like to know for myself if the technology has improved, stayed the same, or lost it’s touch. I love the way my acoustic speakers help build a seamless, wide, enveloping sound stage, although I sometimes wish I could ‘pump up the bass,’ i.e., get it to boom a bit, I like the way I can follow the bass line all the way through most jazz recordings.
I went from Original Large Advents to the new Model 5’s. Ive only gotten more serious about my setup in the last 5 years or so but those Advents were the 1st speakers I came across that I fell in love with. I was very happy with them for about 2 years and then the upgrade bug hit me. Tried KEF LS-50’s, the new Wharfedale Lintons, and of course the Model 5’s. The Model 5’s give me enough of that vintage acoustic suspension sound in the low end that I liked in the Advents, but with FAR more detail in the higher frequencies. Try them first of course, but I think you’ll find the Model 5’s (and sounds like Model 3’s too) have taken the best of the new/old worlds of speaker design and put them together in one package.
@@jeremiahchamberlin4499 One suggestion, and this was the game changer for me, and gave me the sound I have been missing since I was a kid in the 60's and 70's. A Denafrips Ares II DAC, that one purchase and addition, changed the entire sound of the Model 5's, that DAC took me back in time. I would seriously consider the Ares II or the Pontus II, which I plan on purchasing in a few weeks. And I think I will keep the Ares II, as it is that good.
@@michaelwright1602 I’m invested in the Schiit Yggdrasil DAC right now (waiting on upgrade parts at the moment), and I think it has certainly helped with imaging, clarity, and overall sound stage. I don’t think the systems I put together when I was in high school in the late 60’s and early 70’s sounded as good as my system now. Although I do have fond memories of certain components, like an old Fisher (monaural) tuner. I have heard many good reports on the Denefripps’ units and I will consider them seriously when it comes time to upgrade. I’m glad you’re enjoying them. I wish I could say that my current system gave me as much joy as I got out of mine when I was in high school; but thinking back, I was wanting to upgrade even then. It does get close, now and then, mostly due to the track that is playing. But I would probably have said the same back then. Some things don’t change. Enjoy the music.
Andrew, I am looking for some advice.... How integral to the sound are the stands? I was thinking of getting some model 5's but because of my room I would have to use them without the stands with the speakers directly on the floor. However, with these new model 3's, I could use them on their stands. Which do you think would perform better, 5's with no stands or 3's on stands? These would be music only speakers in a 12x18 room at reasonable volume....
I own the 5's, they need the stands. I personally love the stands, they make positioning the speakers very easy and look good. Everyone that has stopped by thinks they look really nice, and "cool". Why could you not use the stands? Wood flooring? If it is a flooring issue and possible scuffs, a trip to Home Depot should easily cure that.
QOTD: I would go with the model 5. You talked about the bass start to fall apart about 88 db, how many feet away are you when hearing that volume level ? I ask because my seat is 11 feet away and while i don't often listen at 85-90 db, my Emovtiva towers don't show any signs of struggling. Not even the Kanto YU6 does that, granted their bass isn't as deep but they don't show any fatigue at 85 db. In that regard, the model 3 wouldn't cut it for me especially at their price.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews In a smaller room, one could sit about 6-8 feet away and I figure from my listening habits, typically range from mid 70 to mid 80db. Would that make a sizable difference in performance? Or rather make the 3s a more suitable option?
Smaller rooms --especially one that likely helps by loading bass frequencies --will no doubt produce different results with respect to the 3's bottom end.
While speaker shopping, be sure to consider speaker impedance. Especially if using older "vintage" amps the were designed for 8 ohms. I chose the JBL L82's due to their 8 ohm nominal, that only dips to 7 ohms. My Sansui amps would be hurting if they had to drive a 3.7 load. And yes, they sound & look wonderful. It was worth eating ramen noodle soup for 5 months... Oh, and now I have no use for a sub, these really hit the lows well.
Look at that room!!! Yall fancy!!! And I gotta point out a production innovation only you have with 'The Robinson Pause'...where you talk over a shot then pause, while the shot keeps going (like 3:02 and 8:02). That is an amazing production quirk that only you do over the years. And I'm here for those lil nuggets of uniqueness
I'm late to the conversation here but I'm hoping someone can suggest from experience an amplifier to match with the KLH Model Three. Price range would be up to $2500 and I don't necessary count out class D amps but I've preferred A to A/B. I also need a well executed remote\volume control as I'm a little older and don't prefer jumping up and down to fine tune volume. Thanks to those who can help.
@@clarice1001nights Its the speakers i care about though The walnut or mahogany does not fit my interior. A black finish would be more neutral in appearence and black goes with most other colors.
Another great video and the new space looks awesome! Having not heard either speaker I’m inclined to agree with you the Model 5 assuming you have no Sub is the better value proposition. Loving all the reviews!
Regarding the stands, if one had stands with enclosed bottoms (perhaps homemade) and still with the tilt to direct the sound toward the listener, would that enclosed bottom change the sound of the speakers?
Please review KLH KENDALL.. I have mine paired with a new Rega Brio.. it's really nice. Up stairs everything system.. I really appreciate your reviews.. I also own Klipsch Forte IV on bigger basement system.. They are the "goldilocks".. just right
Hi, A & K. Nice review. If I were to pick either, it would be the 3, given my room constraints (small 1-BR apt). One of my first grown-up stereos was the KLH all-in-one w/Garrard turntable. Aesthetics matter to me, too, Andrew, and I thought the KLH systems looked better than anything else out there in 1971. Next I had large Advents in 1978, then a pair of Magneplanar SMGa's. I've always liked the greige fabric look. There's just something about it that black boxes (like my current Paradigm SE Monitor Atoms) don't provide.
I will say, the 3s are the type of speaker I WISH were around during my early hifi years because they're an embarrassment of riches (I think) if you have a small space and want an articulate speaker that (with the right amp) can be very engaging at lower volumes.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews There was such a speaker in the seventies. It was the KLH Six,a two way speaker so good it was in production from 1957-the mid seventies. The three looks like a carbon copy visually.
I've got a pair of Model 5's on the way and am in the market for a new integrated in the $2000-3000 range. How did you like the Model 40n with the 5's? Wondering if a better choice than the Yamaha AS-1200 as far as richer low end and less lively highs. Or something like the Musical Fideltiy M5si or M6si or the coming Technics SU-700 MKII might be a better call.
I paired mine with the Denafrips Hades pre and Thallo amplifier... Using their Ares II and Iris DDC with the Bluesound Node 3. Also, broke out my OPPO BDP-83 as a SACD/CD transport. Two SVS SB3000 subs in the mix too. You really do not need the subs with the 5's, but if you like bass, two subs can be very entertaining. The real turning point with the 5's was the addition of the Ares II DAC, that took me back to that 70's sound I grew up with and prompted me to go all Denafrips. I think any good quality amp, I would go with as much power as affordable, will pair well with the 5's. The DAC will make or break these, I do not like the clinical Delta Sigma sound of these new DACs, they really did nothing for the 5's. JMO
@@michaelwright1602 Thanks. I saw your comments on this somewhere else and actually I have a XTZ-Edge A-300 which I think would sound great but my wife wants a nice integrated for ease of use and I can't really fault her for that so I'm looking for an integrated that would pair well.
@@robertgruber982 I hear you there... I would really look for something that has preouts for an external amp and a DAC. I'll tell you the game changer for me and my relationship with the Model 5's, it was the addition of that Denafrips Ares II DAC. That DAC took the 5's to another level, gone is that clinical digital sound I was getting from my other DACs, one being the Schiit Gungnir, which is highly rated in the DAC realm. The reviews are true regarding these Denafrips DACs, they really make listening to music enjoyable, for long periods of time. Now I sit and listen, no longer am I going what was that, and gone is that inherent brightness of many tracks, music is just listenable again. The detail too, it is sweet, not digital sounding or harsh, it just is. And the voicing, just incredible with the Ares II. Honestly, I would pick up an Ares II or Pontus II, if you can use an external DAC with your current setup, before buying any other gear.
@@michaelwright1602 I hear you. I've only heard great things about the Ares II. I promised my wife I'd ditch the separates for a nice integrated amp but a Denafrips DAC is in the cards as well. My current DAC is HiFiberry DAC HAT on a Raspberry PI which uses a Burr Brown chip so while not the greatest resolution, it's not overly clinical and is more on the warm/analog side.
Totally different subject, but what do you know about the new Magnepan LRS+ speaker. I'm on the waiting list to get a pair of LRS. Should I upgrade when my order comes up. It's $245 more.
Hey I loved your review. I would be be really curious to hear your opinion on how the KLH model 3s compare to the Wharfdale evo 4.2 as you reviewed that model last year and I think they are a little close in terms of frequency response range, granted 2 way vs 3 way. However they are both largish speakers.
This was a really pleasant surprise. Nice review to bang out the weekend. Really wanted to buy 5's but they are simply too bih for my room so I guess 3's would ne my choice for my room. It would be nice to sebe your take (review) on Elipson XLS 15 and smaller XLS 11 as they woud seem as direct rivals of the 5 and the 3. Thanks for the video.
I went with the Three's over the Five's because my room is smaller (13x13) and I feel the 2-way design is less critical for placement and "aim" compared to the relatively moderately sized midrange of the Five's. I love the look of both and will try the Five's in a larger room later. I would consider the Linton's only for a larger room where they can be placed out from the wall, due to their ported design.
Can you review the enclave cinehome pro, I don't trust anyone else to give me an honest high quality review. Thanks for coming back to TH-cam and thanks in advance.
I would strongly advise against this for this particular speaker as it sounds markedly different when placed atop anything other than its factory stand.
Nice review. I hope you're planning on reviewing the Model 7 too, when they release. PS if you're looking for a better band than RATM to gauge the performance of gear against rock/metal, I thoroughly recommend Elder. Every album/EP from Dead Roots Stirring and above is masterful and Reflections of a Floating World is singlehandedly responsible for reinvigorating a passion for music I'd not felt since the release of Ænima.
Very interesting review I can definitely understand why the model 5 are better value. I’m interested in port less speakers though I’d want smaller bookshelf form factor.
Dayton Audio has a pair of sealed 6 1/2” speakers with a very, VERY good AMT tweeter. Dayton Audio B-52 Air. I got my pair for $55 last Black Friday. Don’t laugh. They might be the greatest speaker bargain around. Very entertaining!
I bought some used sony 8 ohms speakers they have 4 wires red and black but also grey and black I'm confused what I'm supposed to do with get and black wires any clue ?
First - love your reviews thx. I have a smaller music room 10’ x 13’. Mac MA252 with Rega P6 turntable Soundsmith Carmen Mkii moving iron cart, also separate 10” sub on opposite side of room. Ilove the 5’s but thinking they might be a bit much for that space. Think I’ll go with the 3’s to start and then maybe the 5’s down the road for my larger room in the back. Thank you very much for the insight and review! Very helpful!

Me too dislike the stands, kind of out of proportion, the vertical posts will look better both moving an inch in inwards while the base and suport remains the same. Now it looks odd as Kristi said, and I describe it as and fat/short look.
@@ohno-ohno-VW it does take a little getting used to.
I would pick the Model 5. I think because of the better efficiency and bass depth.
What I would LOVE TO HEAR (reviewed) is placing some AR-3a vs Model 5
....... don't get mad or call me JUST OLD PERSON Stuff, but I'd like to hear someone check out a kind of speaker technique used in the past measured by what sounds like a reintroduction of a known Speaker science.
Sound reasoning! @Lance Blackshaw
They are great
Whoa, fuller than Lintons? Let’s get Andrew in here as a ref.
Kudos.
Could be the smarter choice in the long run. Always appreciate you joining us, Brian. Have a great day!
That is awesome! Do you think you might consider grabbing one of the Threes to use as a center?
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Right now, probably not. But you never know 😉 I’m using the 5’s strictly for music, but I can imagine using a 3 as a center would make for some incredible movie watching
@@andrewrobinsonreviews If you had an older integrated like I do (Moon i-3) which is a line-only amp, what would you do to set up this as a home theater rig? I am concerned about lagtime and if the DAC will produce latency issues. If a person does not buy a new amp, what is a person to do? My older amp has only analog inputs.
Divorce the wife and keep the speakers cranked up. Just kidding.
I like overpaying
For me prices are close enough to just go with the model 5's , plus knowing my room size, definitely the 5's. Using the 3 as a center channel was a cool idea. Great review.
thanks Jim! I love the 3s as a center!
I was dreaming about Model 5 until I saw Model 3. I have a smallish listening room and 5 would have been a little too big although I love the look of them. At decent listening levels and thinking about the aesthetics of room size vs speaker size, I think Model 3 are perfect for me.
I’m in the same boat !
thank you for trying this out as center speaker . Paired with a couple of capable subs for sure as well
Must just be me, I love the stands. I think it's a cool way to get the slight tilt and very somehow with the retro MCM look and feel.
Maybe it's Better a warmer amp!!!
I would choose 3s
Ordered a pair of 3’s first thing this morning! Been waiting for these since that teaser video last year. For my TINY office I felt the Model 5 would be too much so the Triangle Bro3 has been my stopgap, and they have been surprisingly awesome. I’m hoping my Denon PMA-600 does as well with the Model 3 as it has with the Bro3.
Would be interested in how you find them in your setup and how well they perform against the Bro 3s, especially in tonality.
@@nc3419 Right on.. I'll reply here when I get some impressions. As I said above, my office is small (114sqft) so should be interesting.
Thanks.
@@nc3419
Well I’ve been running these for the last 5 or 6 days with the Denon PMA-600 and I think they are just a bad pairing.
Thanks for doing this content , KLH is quite a strong brand going into ‘22. Can’t wait for the model 7.

Another lovely, intelligent conversation. Love it. If I were in the market I'd go for the 5. Love the look of both.
I was so excited for this review! Yesss. Still haven’t heard the 3’s or 5’s but I’d like to if I get the chance. Probably will just stick with my walnut finish Lintons’s though as I’ve been pretty happy with them.

I am digging the retro revival of the last few years!
bro your evaluations are really good and helpful. You're awesome, keep doing what you do
Glad you like them!
Great work!
I used the bass management in our [edit] various amps to cut the bass to the 3s and send it to our SVS subwoofer.

My friend and roommate bought a HUGE Sansui speaker (it was like a 7-way configuration) and he would bother me about how good they were.... so, ONE DAY I disconnected his speakers and put my LITTLE AR-7s on TOP of his Speakers and TURNED THE VOLUME UP.
.... When My buddy (Kenny) came to the room I said he was RIGHT as RAIN the Sansui Speakers were GREAT.... and he was GROVING the sound, when I pointed out his Sansui Speakers were disconnected, and he was listening to the 2 Way AR-7.
.... I wish I had those speakers today, but HE BEGGED ME TO SELL THEM to him...
....... $71 (the Cost) - it was amazing
The Polk Reserves are great! We are hoping to get a chance to hear the large towers at some point.
Your writing on these review scripts just gets better each year.
Have you ever considered writing a book? You're a really REALLY good writer.
Any feedback from folks on whether a Marantz 2245 would have any issue lowering a pair of the model 3? Thanks!
Cannot wait for the KLH model 7 or model 9. No replacement for displacement!
I have a feeling that the Mod 7 will be very good indeed, if it bests the Mod 5
My local store gave me a deal on the Model 3 for $599 each, so I thought I would give them a try since that fit my budget and I can alway add a subwoofer later.
Thank You! Highly informative and very enjoyable. Thank you for reminding me of my old school priorities. 👍
Like these but I just want a larger Linton.
Speaking of the Dentons, I have a Denton 80th pair standing around. That and a Musical Fidelity m3si are just epic for RATM.
Nice combo!
I have my Denton 80s paired with an Arcam SA10 with ML Subwoofer in my bedroom, love my Dentons.
Thank you for this review. I love the conversations at the end and where your options line up and differ. That’s the best. Thank you.

Very interesting comment re the Denton / Hegel mix. I wonder how the Hegel would

@Matty J - Will check it out!
How would these speakers perform without the stands, placed on a bookshelf 4-5 inches away from the wall?
No idea, but because they are a sealed design they may do quite well.
I bought a pair of Model 3 open box for $799 with an open box SA20 for $899. How do you like this pairing?
@@earlyetman5588 you will absolutely love the Model 3’s paired with the SA20. Please make sure you position them about 7 feet apart with an 8 foot listening distance and enjoy. Makes sense when that woofer needs to cover too much range. Good looking speakers! Just when I thought KLH was left in the past they drop the 3 and 5. Kick ass
Kick ass indeed!
We weren't specifically speaking just about the Model 40n.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews thanks so much for reply. Maybe ill give Audiolab a shot first as that would be some significant savings.
*I like the Model 3s without their grilles. Anyone else agree?*
In pics I'm digging the Walnut with the lighter color grilles on, so that's what I ordered. You've seen them in person though, so we'll see.

Excellent review. Congrats on your new digs!
I have a difficult choice to make in the upcoming days.
Planning a 5.1.2 setup, Focal Chora or KEF Q Series?
Could you give me advice?
I think you could be happy with either. If you prefer a slightly more forward / brighter sound, I'd go with Focal. Laid back? Then KEF.
@@KristiWright Thank you SO MUCH for your advice.
I watch lots of audio channels and yours is the one I enjoy must
Kristi doesn't like the Denton 85 because it's a laid back speaker?
I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be happy with the model 3s though.
These are not as refined as your KEF R3 which are a reference speaker. No comparison
Fun Review Andrew!
I appreciate the passion you both bring to these reviews.
Question about use of In-Ceiling Sourounds:
I heard you say Klipsch In-Ceiling speaker for BOTH SURROUND & ATMOS.

Sounds like the 3 it might be a great condo/apartment choice.
I think that is what they are for. NYC apartments or similar style / space.
Advents were amazing in their day. Very respectable. Still, the more modern speaker designs have vast improvements not found in older speakers.
Just bought a pair of 3s today
I purchased a pair in early July; took a few weeks to break in and now they sound amazing. Andrew is correct- you can run these with anything but I noticed a big difference when I switched from an AVR to a pretty stout integrated amp. Enjoy those 3’s!!
Big fan of klh they sound great and looks cool too thx A&K ..
Thanks for tuning in!
Good to see you, WC.
I don't know what happened but the 5s cost € 3.200 here and the 3s € 2.300, the Lintons with stands € 1.300 - so not even the 3s are compareable anymore with the Lintons 😑
Hi Andrew, which speaker sounds better at low volume ?
At lower volumes with a bit more power, the Model 3 is going to come across as "clearer" or more intelligible in most rooms.
Yes, I'd like to know that as well.
Answered above @Charles Clifton
@@KristiWright Thanks.
@@iancooper3460 Thanks for your response. You pretty much confirmed my suspicions.
Interesting but I still want my next speakers to be the Lintons.
No KLH in France but based on your review, I’d go for the 5s.
We sit about 11-12 feet from the speakers' front baffles.
The Tyler Acoustics T1 studio monitor. Is it possible to do a review on that speaker?
Another great review. Love watching/listening to you both. Till the next one.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Are you a TH-cam Premium subscriber?
I'm late to the conversation here but I'm hoping someone can suggest from experience an amplifier to match with the KLH Model Three. Price range would be up to $2500 and I don't necessary count out class D amps but I've preferred A to A/B. I also need a well executed remote\volume control as I'm a little older and don't prefer jumping up and down to fine tune volume. Thanks to those who can help.
Audiolab 6000a. Wish I never sold mine. Powerful, sweet, attractive
I’m using an Arcam SA20 and it’s a great match.
With the small price and size difference i would probably prefer model 5. However, I would have like if they produced the speaker in black.🤔
You will soon be able to get the grills in solid black for the model5s.

Doubtful, the cabinets are sealed. And the stands look fine. I own the 5's, love these things!

Hi. You should hier Atoll IN 80 or IN 100..or ewen IN200. They ar marvelous.
Will you be reviewing the new version of the Mission 770?
I agree. Would get the 5’s if my room were bigger.
I have already two rel tx9...i let them manage the bass frequencies...i would go for the 3s..
