I saw Firewater and Soul Coughing in Cleveland back in 1997. I was pregnant 🤰 I went into false labor during the show.

one of the most UNDER rated artists of our time. I never liked soul coughing very much. When I heard his solo stuff for the first time I was so happy he found his way. You killed it at the Aladin theater in portland oregon in 2003. changed my life. thank you Mike :)

I followed or listened to Soul Coughing coincidentally through some rough times, when I first heard The Only Answer and Sweet Lord in Heaven I was not only impressed but uplifted by what Mike Doughty is doing. I believe if more people truly listened to his songs, hell music in general, they would see the power. Fuggin missed him in Atlanta... Chattanooga would love him.

I don't have a lot of time to watch videos on TH-cam, but I took the time to watch this because I am such a fan of the man behind all of the music I have loved he and his bandmates have produced over the last decades or so. Mike Doughty, you are an excellent person. Keep up the good work buddy.

I loved soul coughing! Those songs were so perfect for their time and so much fun** At least if you were of course, having fun during the mid to late 90's. I have not read Book of Drugs though....sorry to hear it wasn't the case with them. Either way, I am grateful....without the music & those bands most people i know would have no recollection of life from about 1993 to 1999.

Sorry Mike is so Down on Soul Coughing. More power for being able to find a better life and write even better songs than in those days, but I always say perfection is never easy. The recordings Soul Coughing made are so perfect, so unique, so valuable to me and to so many fans. I'm in the sad position of asking if I'd rather have those albums or would I rather Mike been happy. If he hadn't struggled, I'd probably never have got "His Truth Is Marching" or "Unsingable Name". Maybe I'm not as good a person as I thought I was.

I guess it got unspammed. Last month, saw Mike Doughty live for the first time, opening for Low at "The Space" in New Haven. Excellent intimate venue -- kinda like the Iron Horse in NoHo, MA used to be before they unwisely expanded into the "Wymyn On Fy-wah" bokstore and ruined both the ambience and the acoustics.
Doughty was fantastic, Low can hardly be anything BUT fantastic...

Wow. That host. Smarm overload. I still much prefer Soul Coughing. It just didn't sound so one-dimensional. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that his solo music is so focused on acoustic guitar, whereas Soul Coughing branched out dramatically between albums. Super Bon Bon, Unmarked Helicopters, Rolling etc. put guitar in the background and brought bass and drums to the foreground. It just sounded cooler.

    • @crimsonfancy

I picked up on Mike Doughty again after trying to find the song playing in my head. The song Circles. Since then, I've been listening to his music more. And as a newcomer to his music, I've heard some stories with him that got my interest, and hope nothing but the best for him. Soul Coughing is how I was introduced to him, and when I read up more about the band after listening to their albums, it was a huge bummer. Whatever he lived through in his life before and during Soul Coughing must have made him feel that kind of behavior. And it's something to learn from as I go through life.

SO I went through a brief history of Soul Coughing and Mike Doughty in a few hours here. Randomly listening to music in my collection, I hit upon an old favorite 'Screenwriter's Blues' and listen a couple times. A magically visual complete song. Go to TH-cam find the song again, find what I think might be Mike playing it again closer to 'now' and find this. I find out that he hates Soul Coughing, hates his old music, hated his life and of course I had to go see if he was even alive and found him, bearded and bald on Instagram with a Wallace Shawn interest. I would think he would like Wallace Shawn of course, who doesn't like Wallace Shawn, who doesn't like 'My Dinner with Andre' after all. Andre and Soul Coughing live in the same universe as far as I am concerned. There Mike Doughty is, alive, looking like a lumberjack, innocent looking Instagram fellow who murdered Soul Coughing in front of me, after the fact. Years ago. The songs here don't have the same zing that the ones I know do. It's almost a rule of the universe that a musician who shines bright like a shooting star when you first see them is never ever the same but I hear him in there. Ah, sucks getting old. Seeing age dull others. Eh.

You can consider - ther're no right parts now. that's why.
