Thank you so much for this. I did it all by myself! I had no idea it was so inexpensive and easy to do. Our dog ran through the screen years ago and I haven’t been able to use it. 😬.
You can also use the convex side of the roller and roll the screen mesh into the groove FIRST, then roll the spline afterwards. You don't have to push down so hard if you do each screen and spline separately and you can make sure you get the screen taut better without pulling up and re-doing the spline.
on a 20 year old screen do you recommend buying a new spine? My brother just did his and said he you don't need to. I know it's all different conditions, but I was just going to order a "Pet screen" from amazon now. Thanks!
Great suggestion I'm going to do it now. I'm 63 LOL and I'm going to have to use the driveway as my working surface. My screen is 48 by 78. I'm excited to start he makes it look so easy.
Dude, your videos help me during jobs, on the spot. I don't mind watching your videos because they are direct. I never have to scrub for the main part. Thank you for this!
I especially loved this video, because he just got down to business and explained how to accomplish this repair simply and concisely as I watched him do it. Well done!!
Great video and tip. This video really encourage me to do it myself. I did it once before looong long time ago with my bother-in- law, but I forgot and it daunted me to fix it on my own. Thank you for saving my money and time.
Ace hardware was charging my wife $100 to install it smh. I just ordered the screen from Amazon for around $10 free shipping and will install it myself. Thank you for showing how it's done. Saved me a lot of money.
After my Labrador jumped through the door this morning 🤯, this quick to the point instructions video was extremely helpful! Never replaced screens before but you just showed me how very easy it is to replace. Thanks!!
@@homemend I DO feel like a professional now. Hahaha Replacing the screen was very easy! I have a couple of tips I’d like to share here for anyone that was like me, here learning to diy screen replacement. First, if you have NEVER done this before, I would purchase PLASTIC roller vs the metal roller. I bought the metal roller and almost lost a few finger tips. Even when you are trying to be slow and careful, I promise you that roller WILL get you. My second tip is to leave PLENTY of screen on each side of frame as you roll in the spline. I didn’t leave enough work room on one side. When I got to the bottom of the first side, I had to pull the spline out and start over because I ran out of screen to tuck. (Hope that makes sense to anyone reading this)
I want to thank you for your video. It truly was helpful for me. I just finished putting the patio door back up. And it was because of your detail video of how too. God bless you
Great video Justin! Thank you for the detailed instruction, I've always had trouble doing this type of screen replacement job the screen would pull to one side frustrating. But I've got it now.
Wow, it's really just that easy! I have everything but the spline. Good thing I watched this video before trying to replace my screen 🤣🤣🤣 I love handyman videos
Really helpful, Dustin, thanks. I did have to use a wide putty knife to pop the bottom wheels out of the track, otherwise, this 64 year old woman was able to complete and reinstall the door in an hour and a half. Cheers.
@@homemend gotta give a guy with my name the compliment lol on way to buy a screen now. Knew it would be simple but probably would have been trying to keep the screen tight the whole time if not for you
If you are right handed, I have found it is easier to start in the corner of one of the long ends and move from right to left and make your last section a long side. That way you can make sure you are pulling it nice and tight so there are no ripples. Easier to push than to pull the spline tool.
@@homemend Finally had a sunny day (yesterday); popped screen right out and went to work. The only issue i encountered was the Width of the Spine. I initially purchased .141 and need the larger .175. Other than that...followed these instructions and procedure was flawless. Thanks for the video. This is one of those "seems Simple Enough' projects; but can easily go sideways unless you follow the little details.
Great tutorial. My condo balcony door has has big hole. But I can't see the spline anywhere. Is it permanently built into the door? I would like to only replace the screen and not the whole door. Thanks.
Hey hey Mark, thank you sir. Sometimes it is hidden it could be Factory made or it could have a snap on cover plate, I would pick out it a little bit to check it out. You got this.
Work for a glass company...glass & screen repairs the gentleman in this video is doing it correctly, rolling one piece spline takes patience & practice to learn... prefer back tape a framing square for window screens Andersons too ND
hi! thanks so much for the video - so I had a really hard time rolling the spline into the track, I am not sure if my spline was too big or if my tool was bad? I was using 1.4 spline and a wooden/metal tool from Amazon. I noticed your tool looks plastic... just wondering for next time. I muscled through it this time but my wrists are killing me and wouldn't want to do it again without figuring out why it didn't go in smoothly... thanks!
Also, while it's fresh in my mind - just a tip - don't buy the folded screen mesh from Amazon, at least if you want to do your project soon after ordering it. I opened the package I bought and the creases were so bad, it would have taken days to smooth out (if ever) - so I ended up at Home Depot anyway and got a roll of it and it unrolled smooth as butter! Also was glad to have 2 putty knives on hand as my door came off/on more easily with 2 slid under at one time. Thanks again for the video, Dustin, I used it throughout my project and also agree it was nice and short and to the point.
Great video, I live in a community that has a real hardware store the kind where the employees used to do handyman work and are retired. I called to get a quote just to see and braced myself fore the number! 37.00 that includes fiberglass materials. Done!
I usually reuse whatever is there, but the size varies. I believe this one was 1.25, they have a little samples at the Home Depot if you bring your screen and you can try what size or you may need to buy all of them. I hope this helps.
how much does the mesh cost. do we just go to home depot and buy it like fabric, by the yard? approx how much. doing a cost/benefit analysis to see if it's easier to "patchh" with screen tape
Hey seek. You would just buy a roll. It’s probably 3’ x 7’ specifically for a screen door, I like to buy the 25 foot so I can get a couple jobs done for a few dollars more. The role is probably about $20 and there’s nothing like a brand new screen. You got this
thank you for this video. i just had someone try to charge me $400 to replace my elderly parents screen door. Disgusting taking advantage of elderly people. Thank you for your video I will be doing this instead!
