nice video......I also worked at a glass shop that did re-screening...and a trick that worked for me is two things....1..I used spring clamps on the corners to hold the screen..and 2.. I used a heavy object placed in the center of the screen ....and what the heavy object did was not allow the screen to over stretch and cause the frame to bow in...I hope the tips help.
My man didn’t even tap the corners in ahhhhh

Generally a good video, but I suggest the following improvements. 1) tape the frame down to the floor using small piece of duck tape in the center of each side, 2) roll screen over the frame and leave the excess screen on the roll about 1 foot past the frame and then start installing spline opposite side of the roll, 3) never touch the screen again until you have installed the spline all the way around the frame and the results will be perfect (keeping the excess material on the roll prevents bunching up of the material within the frame). I just did 10 screens using my modified method and they all look perfect.

Dang it, Ace hardware charged my wife $80. I'm going to do the other ripped screens from now on lol. Why do they charge so much if it's so easy?

I did mine without wrinkles a few years ago and what ended up happening is that the wire doesn’t like to be stretched and starts breaking apart at the edges. Some slack is Good

i used to sell screens at a local lumber store.Some of the screens we what seemed to be warped.i like the fact that you advised not to make the screen too tight which in turn causes the warping effect.
also,DO NOT stretch the spline,it will revert to its original length and your corners will pop out eventually.Joe @ Arizona Shade.
Or just allow an extra inch or so of spline, and roll it down after it shrinks

I reworked 4 screens today, and the information in this video was extremely useful.
Here are some tips I can offer:
My project used 5/16" diameter spline; the concave roller was a lot smaller than this. When I ran the roller over the spline the first time, the roller jumped into the center and put a gash in the screen. I got around this problem by placing my other thumb against the roller and pressing the roller against the outer edge of the spline channel. This tended to keep the roller in place.
Also, when positioning the screen initially, place the frame as close as possible to the edge of the screen. My frames were 26" wide and the screen was 30" wide, so I had 4" extra of screen to work with. I placed the frame so that I had 1" on one side and 3" extra on the other side. If you screw up and put a gash in the screen, you can pull it out and still use that section of the screen.
When I used the convex roller to make the channel in the screen, I kept my thumb on the screen against the frame. Otherwise, the screen will end up crooked as you run the roller down the side. This way, the channel ends up parallel to the edge of the screen.

Wish I had run across this video before I paid $40 to put one new screen in. Now I fixed a screen that was just coming out of the frame. Used the same screen and spline. Easy peezy! You tube is wonderful! Just saved myself a bunch by changing my own garage door sensors also. All because of you tube "how to videos".

Considering the importance of screens, letting fresh air in, but keep bugs out, I would think every community that had residents that used screens, would want this taught well to students, Jr. High and above. But, as we know, our very expensive education system is not as near practical as it could be, to benefit the inhabitants.
Great video. I was able for the first time to replace my screen properly. I always used a hammer to tap the spline back in. But a grabbed a screen tool. That made the difference.

When replacing a window screen is one thing but which type of screening should you use? I typically use what ever was in the broken screen so all the windows match. This is not always the case an I have swapped out materials, especially for screen doors, more on that below.
There are there basic types of screens:
Fiberglass
Aluminum / Bronze
Pet or Shade Screen
Fiberglass screening is the most common. It is flexible and easy to install, in fact if you make a mistake during the install you can remove the spline and start over as the fiberglass screening material does not have a crimp fold memory.
Tip: when installing fiberglass screening ensure that you keep the screen taunt and wrinkle free. Ive accomplished this by using clamps, a helper or adding weight to hold the excess screening hanging off the far end - tight! don't install the fiberglass too tight or you can warp the screen.
Aluminum screening is stronger, ore durable and my preference for screen porches. Unlike fiberglass screen, does dent and has a memory once dented, dinged or crimped. This means yo have one-shot of installing it, if you screw up , you'll need to start with fresh material.
Pet or Sun Screening has a thicker grid which restricts light, and like fiberglass is flexible to work with. This is helpful with keeping the sun out and helps reduce fabric and carpet fading. It is also a stronger material than fiberglass and aluminum screening, which makes it a fantastic screen of use in screen doors and in places often damaged by pets.

Sometimes it is difficult to remove the old spline. You don't want to damage the spline canal. I used a safety pin. I worked it into the end of the spline about 1/8 of an inch and then pulled the spline up.

It will be a lot easier if you pre-spline to seat the screen into the groove before installing the spline.

Also if you're trying to remove a screen that is missing the pull tabs, use your thumbs at the top of the screens corners to push up on the frame. That will pull the bottom up and pop out of the track.
Use this method and you don't even need the pull tabs.

"This guy" did address that in the follow up video that pops up in this video at the 0:30 mark. This is a very old video of mine, and while making it I knew how tedious getting a screen to look really good can be. It can really frustrate a lot of people, especially beginner DIY'ers. When I made this video you can see me looking at that corner and pausing. I am thinking is it worth causing the possible frustration of pulling that corner back out to get it tighter, without getting it too tight? Again I talk about that in the newer video, and go more in depth on the screen repair.

Some more tips: (1) if right handed orient screen so it is on your right-side in other words work around it clockwise. If left handed, counter-clockwise. (2) inspect screen first on a white background, sometimes mfg defects like uneven spacing happens, (3) cut size out first with scissors allows the screen to lay flat more easily so you'll be less likely to skew it. I learned all these the hard way and wasted screen (which I had to toss) and time.

What I liked about this video was that Nathan illustrated a couple of the pitfalls of screen installation.
1) The possibility of pulling the frame apart while trying to make the screen tight.
2) Exercise care when trimming the excess after installing the spline so you won't cut the inside of the screen you just installed.
I'd just be concerned about scratching the frame surface on the garage floor, but sometimes that's all we have to work with.
Just keeping it real. Not all garages floors, but mine is super smooth.

No problem. I have actually been attacked by a few people about this video. Saying how it was loose and sloppy. I will admit that the first corner was a bit loose and I thought about going back and tightening it. You can see me pause in the video and think about it for a second. I made this video for first timers so I did not want to make people freak out trying to make it perfect. A screen seems so simple, but it can be one of the most frustrating things to do. Better a little loose then too tight and warping the frame. Honestly, even though I use the fiberglass screen most of the time, if you use the aluminum screen you can get it tighter without as much warping problem. One thing to remember...the spline channel is probably close to 1/4" deep, so there's no need to try to get the screen perfectly taut before rolling in the spline. Just the act of splining will add that last little bit of tautness to the screen as it pulls the screen into the channel

One suggestion: I should have considered if I was going clockwise or counterclockwise around the frame, since I was using the screen tool with my right hand, on a very large screen. (I think clockwise would have been the better way in this case; I had to cross my arm over a lot.) Not sure if you mentioned this in the video.

4 years later you got a DIYer here who finds this comment useful. Yes, this is indeed a useful observation by Leslie McGuinness-Monclova. The threading of the spline unto the channel grove can be consistently & evenly installed depending on whether you're left or right handed. For right handed DIYers and you have a table to work with, I would start on the short section of the screen frame, working from the right corner moving towards the left (clockwise). Your right hand could be pressing the spline unto the channel while your left hand is mending, stretching, the screen for proper fit. For the Left handed DIYers, rolling & installing the spline starting from the leftmost (short) section of the screen frame, moving along to the right (counter-clockwise) around the frame should be a comfortable move. I'm right handed and used the clockwise pattern. It worked like a charm without criss-crossing my arms.

I cannot slide the top of the frame into the rails because it seems like the frame or the screen door itself is warped. How do I remedy when the screen door is warped or not sliding into the top rail? thanks?
This is a hard question without actually seeing it. With the frames being hollow it is easy to collapse if you try and bend it, so be careful that you don't make it worse. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

YOU DONE VERY EASY I try on mine i done three but one of the frame got bend it so i have to remove back and re straight the frame and reinstall the screen back but i am installing thicker screen for my cat maybe thats why was hard to install
Thanks for your question. The thicker "pet" screens are harder. So don't feel bad about that. I believe that I mention that it is better to be a little loose then too tight in this video. And it takes a lot of practice to get the tension just right. I get a lot of flak for leaving that one corner a little loose in the video, but I did that for a reason. I didn't want people going crazy trying to get it perfect. I was trying to show a realistic re-screening for someone learning, not be like, this is 100% perfect. Now your turn. You are right, a really loose screen will wear out with the wind. I thought about re-doing the first corner, but was afraid of getting people's OCD going with this and assuming this video was helping them out on their first screen. Because it is a little. As I was doing it I considered to pull the first corner out and get it a little tighter. The reason I didn't is because screens can be super frustrating and I didn't want to pass an OCD level of perfection over to the general audience for this video. If you pull the screen too tight the the screen warps. At that point you have gone from bad to worse. I felt it was the lesser of two evils. I made this video for beginner level DIY'ers so that's how I left it. You can take more time and pull out a loose corner and really perfect it if you want and if you have the patience. I was just hoping you could tell me. When you have a fresh roll of the fiber glass screen it tries to roll back up after you cut it. Do you want to put the concave edge down or up?
I think it is easier if you put it face down but does that cause any kind of extra slack in the screen or ripples?
The extra slack in the finished screen will not be effected by which side up you put the fiberglass screen. In the video I have a little extra slack but that was not caused by which side went up. I could have pulled it tighter, but that can cause the frame to warp. Another trick to getting the slack out is when you are done loosen the spline on the corners and pull the screen a little tighter then put the spline back.

No problem. I looked thru the comments first to see if anyone else has mentioned it before I posted. Its a great tutorial. I was disappointed to read in the comment section that it will never come out as good as factory because I am doing my sliding screen door next weekend and I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I just ordered the screen kit. I suppose its still better than paying $120 for a new screen door.
It comes very close. If you really want it to be as close to perfect as possible you can work with the corners a bit more. You can loosen the spline and snug up the corners.
Thanks Nathan. I'll give that a try. I would assume I can keep the screen a bit more tight on a sliding screen door than I can a screen window seeing the frame of the door isn't going to bend/buckle from the tension?
Yes, typically you can.
Here's a tip:
Cut a piece of thick corrugated cardboard to fit just inside the frame and lay the screen on it while installing. This will help to keep the screen taught and straight.

This is really just an idea I've been kicking around. I don't really KNOW if it's a great idea, but it seems to make sense. I'll try it in a day or two and let y'all know...

Nope. It doesn't work. The cardboard serves no purpose. You can't just lay the screen across the frame and expect the spline to pull the screen taught. You have to hold it taught as you go, and that's easy to do. (Don't pull too tight, or you'll bow the frame.)

Here's a pro tip - if you think the gray, or metal colored screens are good idea, get the black instead, otherwise your wife will have a look once you've finished and realize the gray looks too cloudy, forcing you to go get the black screen and redo it lol

It will some, but I have found when using a spline that is too tight if you pull and stretch it as you put it in, that will make it skinnier. Though if it is a whole mm larger that sounds like too much of a difference. Do you all get Amazon there?

Just hold it with your hand. And I get a lot of flak for not going back to that first corner and making it tighter, but when I made this video I choose not to do that. If you have a bit of OCD you have to be careful because you will go crazy trying to make it perfect. And it is easy to make it too tight and just warp the frame. Better a little loose then too tight. Saw this was "pro" tip which caught my attention. I'm pretty good at this already, but going for near perfection. I noticed your screen ended up with a small warp in the bottom right corner. That's what I would like to avoid. There must be some more tips for this.

What % was that?
I'm not familiar with that for screens. I went to go check my roll, and it only listed charcoal fiberglass. If there was more information on it, it is gone now.

Your screen has a wave in it and is not tight. You said you've done 100 of these so I was hoping you could show a little better result for those of us who haven't done one. If I was paying someone to do this I wouldn't accept your finished product.
Ah, but you didn't pay me did you? I have done more then 100 of these, but I was also focused on trying to teach people that haven't done this before. I did notice that my first corner was a little loose, but I didn't want to pull it apart or re-stretch that corner. If I did so it would cause many people watching this video to over stress on how tight the screen is. And for a beginner learning this it is better to have a screen a little to loose then too tight and have a warped frame. I don't expect someone doing this for the first time to complete the job with professional skill. When I made this video I wanted the average homeowner to feel like they could do this. Not stress out that the screen has to be perfect and decide to not even try. I only put that kind of stress on people doing plumbing or electrical because if that is done poorly it will do damage to the home, and at the end of the day it's only a screen.

@@AroundTheHome1 long winded excuse for something so simple. I agree with the original comment. It would have been nice to see it done nicer with some more detail. When people try this at home, they will 1000% run into this issue, revisit this video - and all of a sudden - the video becomes a dead end for their re-screening project.
@@BTCKYLE and onemoreboat here's an idea, instead of bitching about the screen being a tad loose, why don't y'all use the time to go make a couple screen install videos. Then you can show all of TH-cam land how perfectly tensioned your screens are. But only do this if y'all are single. Because the overwhelming love you will undoubtedly receive from the ladies, could cause relationship problems. Nothing a lady loves more than a man who can install a perfectly tensioned window screen!
