16 active years in military. Mink oil without Kiwi wax type polishes kept my feet warm in the Bosnia winter. With Kiwi wax my feet froze. Kiwi wax type polish magnified the heat of the Texas sun too, and it won't let your leather breathe. Misery.
A video on socks would be great for people too. And on layering for the winter climates, and sun protection for summer, etc...
Saddle soap and mink oil is all I use on smoothe leather boots, especially for winter. Use corrigated cardboard also to dry inside your boots. Other options she mentioned sound great too. Cardboard is cheap or free and readily available.
Polishing helps protect from scuffs and helps "hide" them too.
So glad I found your channel.

Oh Christa!! My dad used to say the same thing!! What a great job you did with this project. I’m so glad you followed up with this video to your previous video. The waterproofing is so important. And thank you for showing the way to apply it!! Love, Mary❤️😘❤️

I'm making my conditioner/waterproofer tomorrow just as you taught me, but I must say, I can tell that you have the most beautiful heart. It's really a blessing just to listen to you, for myself anyway. With the past year we've all had, it's really nice to see someone smile and speak through our Father. I don't even know you, but you are my sister in Christ. Blessings to you and your family.

Extra boot tip: to help tall boots keep their shape, insert cut up pool noodles in them. That helps them stay straight / not flop over and crease.
Great video Christa. And some •cute• shoes!

Awesome my dad showed me the same way to care for my boots and footwear... he was ex RAF and also used the same maxim you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes...
And i like father like son do likewise... infact I'm currently servicing my boots now, hence why your yt came up in the search...
Elvis' walk a mile in my shoes is an apt and beautiful befitting monologue intro❤

My dad was a Marine drill Sargent. we were taught to how to make our beds so that we could bounce a quarter off the taunt cornered blanket and how to spit shine our shoes (after we had finished his). I'm not sure what chemistry. was involved in spit shining, but they looked like patent leather when done properly. great tutorial. thanks Christa. I got my supplies for making this salve/balm/magical wonder water proofer this week. will be making up a batch to try it out on a cotton boonie hat. Sadly, all my workin' outdoors boots are synthetic.

You could use Beeswax and standard Olive Oil. Both equal parts and will protect your leather and waterproof them. Also adding essential oils for smell can make it more pleasant than some others I have read about. Plus you can brush the wax on and let it seep in. By heating up your boot with a hair dryer to get the leather warm it will soak in and keep the leather supple when applying.
From a Nordic Heathen, may our Gods protect you also ;)

Thank you for making this video ... I made your leather conditioner at a 1-1-3 ratio last night and it works good . . My only issue with my batch is that turned out pretty hard after it solidified ... it still applies to boots and leather fairly easy though I just would have liked it to be a little softer and easier it get onto a rag or my fingers to message in. Do you have any suggestions on making it even softer such as a thick paste / creamy ? Maybe adding some Tallow or a couple ounces shea butter so as not to add more oils since the oil base and shine is working just fine .
Again thank you for making this video and sharing your Pops tried and true recipe . My leather boots and jackets and sheaths now look like new again and very supple ., I just ordered 24 -4 oz tins and I plan on making a bunch more and passing it out to my friends and family. a real money saver and harsh chemicals free .
    God Bless !

How do we feel about cream polishes instead of wax polishes like kiwi?
Also is it wise to spray waterproofer AFTER polishing? Or should I spray it straight onto the bare leather after cleaning /before polishing? Usually I hit my boots with a layer of neutral cream polish, a layer of colored cream polish, and then finish them off with a layer of wax polish. Then I spray with waterproofer.

Will this work for an unfinished (raw leather) purse? Its hand made. I think its dyed. thick cowhide leather. I want to seal and protect it. Some water proofing is necessary but my main objective is to protect softer and condition. Its brand new (expensive) and i don't want to ruin it. Thanks for your help 😊

@2:30 - Neatsfoot oil does not eat stitching. Neatsfoot oil is a natural oil, the bacteria that is attracted and grows in the Oil eats fabric. Neatsfoot oil will also darken leather, and stain fabric.

I just this yr researched proper leather care at length. Here are my 3 home made recipes. 1st saddle soap. Why? Because I was curious, & I wanted as natural a product as possible. 10 oz Distilled water or at least bottled, 3 oz pure lard soap I made myself. Grate it on a box grater, 2 oz beeswax pellets, & 1 oz castor oil. Bring water to boil, add grated soap, reduce heat, wisk till dissolved, scrape pot bottom occasionally as you go. Add beeswax & castor oil & stir in well. Pour into tins while hot. Once cool, place lid on & screw it tight. That is my saddle soap & it gently cleans, conditions & makes supple my boots & my leather sneakers too. After a day of drying I condition. After several attempts I came up with a very simple conditioner that is every bit as good as Samir which costs $23.00 per 1/3 oz. I bought some. Good, but my recipe cost me $1.07 per ounce to make - yes I costed out the recipe. 1 tablespoon each pure lanolin, shea butter, jojoba oil. Melt together in a double boiler just till melted while stirring. Remove from heat & add 1 teaspoon D- limonene (or the pricier orange essential oil). While all are liquid stir it in & pour into a little screw top tin (2 oz size) or any jar thats airtight & blocks light. My 35 yr old boots are beautiful again after these 2 steps plus a good shoe shine with yes my home made shoe polish. Here it is & its by weight not volume. I used grams for precision & I swear its way smoother than the store bought stuff. Bees wax 4.33%, carnauba wax 12.98%, almond oil6.65%, olive oil 48.57%, jojoba oil 5.08%, D-limonene (orange oil) 6.06%. If you switch the % sign to grams you make just shy of 3 ounces. Write this down for a cold winter Sunday when you are bored. If you want colorant add it sparingly. I use neutral (uncolored) on everything. Melt the solids in a double boiler then add all the others after removing from the heat but leave the bowl on top of the pot of water so the cool oils don't solidify the hard waxes. Stir till homogenous pour into tins. This costs even less to make. I added 7% stearic acid an emulsifying wax but may omit this if my next batch maintains emulsion once cooled without it. If you want a crazy thorough reference to read on the subject google the following: Shoe polish patent published by Oliver Rothenberger, 2012. It tells you EVERYTHING on oils, emulsifiers, petroleum additives & all natural substitutes etc its amazing if you want to thoroughly educate yourself on this very specific subject of leather cleaning conditioning & polishing. It includes recipes for sport shoes, street shoes dress shoes, even parameters for ea. of the waxes & their properties, same for oils & animal fats too. Really thorough publication. You're welcome, my Christmas gift to you. Its a good feeling taking care of your leather boots & shoes.

Great vidio! Have you used Dubbin at all and would this compare to that? I have been using Dubbin on my wife's moccasin boots to water proof them for a while now. I know it's supposed to water proof them but knowing this has wax in it, may be better.

You can tell about a man or a woman... My grandmother used to say that you can have a new dress and old shoes and look very cheap. But you can have an old dress and new shoes and look great. Shoes and how we keep them is important.
There are specific products to protect your shoes.

Great tutorial. If you get time...look up LEXOL...IT is fabulous for all those fancy Tony Lama heavy duty well made boots, saddles, belts, and jackets. I use it on anything I'm not going to put steel into. For that I use a thin coat of Cetaphyll skin cream...a product used as a moisturizer for folks with skin problems. Then a couple of thin coats of BALLISTOL...it nutralizes excess acid that rots stitching...then I would use a balm like you made for waterproofing...my only caution is DONT OVERDO it with the Cetaphyll...it really softens leather quickly.
