I really want to try this with spike lavender oil instead of turpentine. It is a common alternative to turpentine as a solvent and medium in oil painting so it should work here as well. It smells better and is supposed to have some insect repellent properties too. Unfortunately it costs quite a bit more than turpentine but it would be interesting to try it and see how well it works.

Hey bud, you can add some microcrystalline wax to that mixture and it makes it last substantially longer on whatever you put it on. Also if you want some darker color, tung oil works great. If you wanna make it easier to apply then apply with the wax melted using a paint brush. I love tinning my cloth and leather.
How much wax would you suggest, adding to this recipe?
@@craigha7959 it all depends on what you’re looking for. The more microcrystalline you add the harder it is to work with but my recipe, by weight, is 40% microcrystalline, 50% beeswax, 4% tung oil(or oil of your choice), 4% turpentine and 2% sandalwood oil(only bc sandalwood and beeswax smells amazing together). The more microcrystalline you use, the stiffer the final product.
Could i add silicone to this also?
@bjellison905 i dont think it can work, silicone is a dificult one to keep it melted it just polymerise

I used toilet wax rings, super cheap and easy to get.
Doesnt this recipe also leave your project extremely flammable?
the only reason to not apply this mix while warm lies on the fact that as soon as the wax touches a cooler surface it solidifies therefore rendering the application to the same state as it would when applied after letting it cool down. :)
As you add the mix to your leather just hit it with a hair dryer on the high setting and it will melt into the leather.
Highly-flammable paraffin wax generally ignites at the following temperatures, depending upon its melting point, and the hardeners you mix into it: Paraffin wax without additives: 199˚C (390.2˚F). Paraffin wax with additives: 249˚C (480.2˚F)
The outer core of the candle flame is light blue -- 1670 K (1400 °C). That is the hottest part of the flame. The color inside the flame becomes yellow, orange and finally red. The further you reach to the center of the flame, the lower the temperature will be.
Can you use it in a liquid state and brush on?
This is a highly self-combustible mixture. I use this for sealing furniture. NOT on fabric as it can start a fire!!! Also I don't recommend using any flame or stove. If you use a cheese grater grate the wax then mix the turp and boiled oil then mix in the wax let it set for a little while and stir occasionally until the wax is dissolved and you are ready to go. With no fire! Do not use rags with this stuff unless you know what you are doing. soak everything you use in a bucket of water over night to avoid FIRE! Brushes and rollers can self combust also. Make sure you clean everything very well. This is an old recipe that my grandfather taught me a long time ago. It works but just be careful.
Tried this 2 months ago per formula. Still with turpentine odor. Wife doesn’t like being around me when wearing vest. Gets me after a short time also.
When you light a candle, the heat of the flame melts the wax near the wick. This liquid wax is then drawn up thewick by capillary action. ... The wisp of smoke you sometimes see when acandle flickers is actually caused by unburned soot particles that have escaped from the flame due to incomplete combustion.

Could you brush this onto leather/sheepskin when it has cooled slightly but is still in liquid form.

I have used this formula a lot in the recent years. It does darken veg tan leather to a nice aged brown color. The only down side i have seen to this waterproofing is that i will get a layer of slime on the bottom of the coffee can when i reheat it to use it again.

+Gonza I have worn my jacket around campfires with no issue, but I will say that I had let it cure for a month before doing so- excellent question...

Steve Tipps Excellent, seemingly obvious observation... the reality for me is - I don't know HA! This is just the way I was taught how to do it. Give it a try and give a reply... I'd love to know how it went!

I think you can paint it on in liquid form. The caveat is that boiled linseed oil in a rag is prone to spontaneous combustion until it's dry and it generally takes days or more depending on weather to cure. You can make a pretty good tarp from a high thread count cotton bed sheet using that formula. Just hang it up outdoors in a shady spot. With a jacket or something use a hanger. You can also do without the bees wax. Wax is great for water proof but just the linseed oil and turpentine or mineral spirits are plenty water proof and less sticky. The waxed recipe is better in my mind for pack sacs, tarps bags and things you don't wear. Waxed pants are okay but I don't like waxed coats as much. They still shed water pretty good.
Rick Bloom I am quite interested in what you say about not adding the wax. The wax adds considerable weight so I am ready to try the turpentine/ linseed oil mix alone, but am nervous. How long does that last, how oily will it feel, and yikes, will the smell dissipate? (The wax smells great!). I am looking to do a few packs, and bags, and maybe a coat.
Could you pour the melted "proofer" into an ice cube tray, muffin tin or deltoid tins so you could just rub the the cube on the fabric or does it not get that firm?
Why don't you just reheat your mixture in the can and then apply it with a paintbrush? It will spread farther, it will be really warm so it will soak right into whatever you are applying it to, you won't have a bunch of excesses being wasted, and your coating will be spread out uniformly. And the best part is that you will not be risking burning your gloves, boots, jacket, etc. with a super hot heat gun. The warmed and melted mix will have plenty of residual heat so what you are applying it to will get warm and the mix will soak in just fine. Servicemen in the military have melting Kiwi Wax and applying it to their boots and gloves almost forever. It's a tried and true method.

If i coat my work gear,how stiff does it become,still comfortable, does it flake, and how do i wash my work gear if its waterproof?
I do love this! It's awesome! But for lighter coloured materials, I guess it won't work if you don't want the colour changed in any way. And what happens to the material when you go to wash it?

I notice you added turpentine to your mixture does it work better than just the boiled linseed oil and bees wax and instead of letting it harden and applying it can you use a paint brush while it is in a piqued form and applie it and after it dries and hardens reheat it with either a hair dryer or heat gun to bond it to what you are water proofing?
Try to get the raw linseed oil because the boiled linseed oil has heavy metals and petroleum products
I like this method but from what I heard it is easier to do if it is in a liquid state and done with a paint brush to cover what you are water proofing instead of letting it harden and rubbing it in is that true and after it hardens slightly in a coating on the material then use the heat gun or hair dryer to melt it into the item. I plan to water proof a couple of backs this way, and am wondering if it will work with the zippers also? What do you thq? Please let me know.
Why not just paint it on when it was in liquid form?
I'm guessing that you'd want to avoid soaking all the way through the lining. Wiping on just enough solid stuff to melt into the outer fabric seems less wasteful too.

Once it cools down...before it solidifies... can't you brush it on?
Why not brush it on while it;s liquid, then hit it with the heat gun to soak it in?

Hi, I have outdoor railings, painted wrought iron, with wood hand rails. Trying to stop rush and protect the wood joints. Will this work? If so for how long?
Flax oil goes rancid practically as you watch it. How can it be part of such a concoction? Is it boiling it that makes it suitable?

Why does everyone use turpentine instead of mineral spirits?
@Trozar, probably because turpentine is derived from pine trees, where as mineral spirits are distilled from a petroleum by product. Probably think it’s more Natural, although they would perform the thinning and emulsifying equally well. Possibly the smell is more pleasant would be a factor and many os the 100 year old recipes used it when turpentine was more common than today. Just my thoughts.

Nifty Thrifty Bits Excellent question... and yes. that is one of the drawbacks of this waterproofing. It also makes the cloth or leather slightly darker in color.

It seems to keep 'some' insects, and other critters from being very interested in the item (or its' contents) IME
However, I wonder if the Beeswax would encourage Bees/Wasps Etc. -? (Killer Bees here)
And, I also wonder how the Beeswax would fair as far as camping/living where Bears are present-?

Like the turpentine and boiled linseed oil i'm worrying about, Could you try to describe the smell on the piece of cloth afterwards? Should I add drops of cintronella essencial oil to make it better for exemple? THANKS!!

@@Bigfamilyhomestead 2 years, that sounds awesome! I have no way of knowing how much water your jacket comes in contact with so I do have question. Do you think this method will be effective for boots on someone that works around moisture and splashing water every day? I tried beeswax, petroleum jelly, and a small amount of sandlewood scent oil, it worked for a couple days but that's about it. I think your method might be more effective.
Why not raw linseed oil instead of boiled, boiled only has hardener so added it's not actually boiled.

Any paint thinner will work for wood apps but keep in mind that this will darken the wood a bit if that's what your asking for

Dude. Put a pie pan w/water under can. Fumes are heavier than air. Heated, the fumes exit top of can. Then as it cools when it falls to the pie pan. It dissipates. I've seen bees & paradise explode. Not pretty. Peace

pretty sure he mentioned it for no reason. you should be able to substitute with used motor oil or old latex house paint from your garage. just as good
Now let me get this right. The recipe is 2 parts bees wax 1 part boiled linseed oil n 1 part turpentine. Only thing how many. Cups did your recipe just make at the end. Bees wax is sold by weight Not by liquid volume. 16 ozs by weight is not the the same as liquid volume. Just wondering.
Why BOILED turpentine and oil. Why didn't you show the process of boiling the turpentine and oil?
Also, you should have not let it cool and hardend, you should have brushed on the hot wax.
No excess wasting time consuming heat gun process needed.

Out of curiosity. What does this stuff SMELL like? I would hate to have my nice leather trench coat smelling like...well, turpentine! Or does it wear off?

Boiled linseed oil has been processed to allow it to dry. Natural linseed oil (“unboiled”) will stay sticky.
