This was first introduced in Episode 3, when Maomao said I am not high status. After that he reserved this nickname for himself, but apparently he shared (and other info I suspect not only her observations on Jinshi) with Suiren Jinshi super attendant.
Jinshi learning the hard way that someone who is smart at one or two things (medicine, poison, puzzle solving) isn't necessarily smart at everything (memorizing Imperial Chinese bureaucracy).
I like the way Maomao sizes up the tall court lady with the poker face in the LN - when the group is badgering her, she thinks that one is the type who wouldn’t exactly join a mob, but would tag along just to see what was going on.
"my red flag go ding ding ding ding" I mean, he give this impression from the beginning, but I'm sure that further, your red flag will go even wilder lol.
The bug has a fungus growing on it which is a genus of the Cordyceps fungus. That fungus makes of zombie of insects to spread. It's the same genus that's behind the zombies/monsters of The Last of Us series of video games. Currently the fungus only effects insects which once infected try to stay near others and are often removed for the fungus to grow out the exoskeleton and then disperse. The Last of Us games main theory was what would happen if this fungus successfully managed to infect a human being.
Okay... I basically cannot say anything about anyone here without doing a dance in the spoiler territory. So for those confused, when Suren was mentioning underwear and hair, she was implying that at least one girl made a loin cloth (The under-garment shown) out of her own hair for Jinshi to wear. Which is all kinds of creepy. In the future it is implied that some of the men were as bad, and that is why Suren is not only the only servant, but also that she assesses every potential servant who enters Jinshi's employment for deviancy. Also she didn't shiver at the books, but at Jinshi's pretty boy expression. Most of the court lady exams require a heavy dose of rote memorisation, and as described Maomao is a poor student when unmotivated.
Man, this show’s baachan casting game is ON POINT. Remember how I fanboyed last time about the narrator being Sumi Shimamoto and Fengming being Noriko Hidaka? Well, Suiren is voiced by MIKA DOI. Who starred in the hot new anime of 1982, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, as Misa Hayase. Oh, and she was also Queen Serenity in Sailor Moon and Ritsuko’s mother in Evangelion. (And she’s Koby in One Piece I guess.) Yes, this is the kind of thing I nerd out about.
1:15 Oh man! NOW I know what this scene was about. Wow do they ever plant the seeds for these things down the road... like 10 episodes later we discover the significance of this stuff. This is going to be one of those shows I watch again from the start after having finished it. The fun of seeing all the hints and details that make sense after knowing. Love that in a show.
I love the subverted tropes involved in Maomao's story, but the one that made me laugh the most was the court lady exam. I didn't believe for a second that she'd fail, I thought it'd be a common sense test that someone as intelligent as Maomao would easily pass. But then they show how stressed she was studying for it and she still failed, all while asking the question "why did he ever expect me to pass?" Very much not how I expected it to go.
I knew I missed things in the show despite reading multiple times, where or which episode did she previously appear in? For some reason this lady always makes me forget to notice her.
Honestly don't know how I would react to having some woman give me underwear made out of her own hair. Like how messed up do you have to be to even want to do that in the first place?
I'm so glad that I watch reactions of the show because I had just seen who passed the pipe off and I missed it earlier on my initial watch through. I mean I remember it being gifted but I didn't pay attention to it. This show is brilliant with how subtle it is.
I’m kinda impressed by that maid who tried to get Jinshi to wear underwear woven from her own hair. That’s a new level of fangirling. On another note, I have mixed feelings about the way they reorganized the court lady exam bit for the anime. In the LN and manga, the first we hear about it is “How could you fail?” “What did you expect?” and Maomao becoming his maid, which leads into the scene where she’s cleaning and being accosted by the court ladies. The change gives the episode more of an arc, but I don’t think it’s a great one - Maomao never shows any interest in studying, so it’s almost a foregone conclusion. And “she’s Jinshi’s maid now” makes a better transition into the squabble, especially because she’s cleaning at the start of it.
Can't wait for the end of the season reaction (let's see how shes gonna react to the information then) 😂 no shade just let's see if she's gonna remmeber what shes said 😜
Gaoshun calling Maomao "Xiaomao" is basically him calling her "Little Cat". Which is very cute.
It's comparable to adding -chan to somebodies name.
In chinese it's cute. On discord, cringe to call someone kitten

Jinshi basically asked a med student/chemistry major to take law school, 🤣like what did he think would happen

He's worth at least five, given what he'll do purely out of boredom.

I’ve only got one word to describe Jinshi, whipped.😂

Man. Anyone who saw him like that would regain conciousness in 3 hours at least.
Jinshi is the littoral definition of the phrase "I woke up like this."

"My ability to learn about things I'm not interested in is below average."
so as a fun side note the caterpillar fungus is cordyceps the fungus that caused "Last of Us" lol
Since she watch them in bulk, it's not (not) spoiler. I wonder when Alicia will realize she already saw the tall court lady before this episode.
I knew I missed things in the show despite reading multiple times, where or which episode did she previously appear in? For some reason this lady always makes me forget to notice her.
Maomaon was basically considering selling Jinshi's bathwater
AHH I LOVR THAT UR CATCHING UP
So mean to poor Lakan, is it the monocle? Its the monocle isnt it?

Would love to see a reaction to "I'm in love with the villainess"

Considering the amazing episode coming tomorrow, I am so tempted to subscribe to her Patreon just to catch up..

Did jinshi want to give her a better room

Maomao is really only focused on medicine so she will do as little as possible on studying.
She is very tall for a woman and seems very smart.
