  • This is the start of a new series, in which we will look at the Fordson Dexta, and try to get it back as a working tractor. Currently, it starts and runs, but needs a bit of work doing to help make it run better.
    If you do know anything about these tractors, or have any advise for me, please do leave a comment.

    PTO Switch is a lever (vertical ) the lever you referred to is the two adjustments for whether to you have variable on I/O hydraulic movement.

    Hiya mate only just seen this video and I have a 1960 Dexta myself, anyway here's some info that may help you the tacho sits in a sleeve which lifts it about 3 inch's above the rest of the dashboard, the water temp gauge is one complete unit and one end bolts into housing above the water pump but you have to remove the fuel tank to get the cable part down past the steering column, the control box if I remember correctly should face the other way and have two screws to hold it in place, and that lever you said was for the PTO is not it's your draft/lift control lever if you are ploughing you put it in draft which is how it is in the vid if you want to just use the arms normally it should face straight down and they will lift up and down without any issue, the PTO lever is the long one connected to the clutch pedal as it's a live drive PTO depress the clutch half way and it will disengage the gear but the PTO will keep going press all the way down and it will stop both of them, as for the leaks if I'm remembering right some of the gaskets are made of cork and leak when they dry out when the tractor isn't used very often, anyway really sorry for the long comment and I hope it was useful for you.

      Hi, Thanks for that. Very useful, glad I'm not the only one with one of these tractors!
      I've started a few bits on it (wished I hadn't) and slowly getting them done. An update video will be out soon 👍

    It is also worth checking the steering play and lubrication. If you want a service manual they are available on DVD or a friend may have a copy. They are beautifully simple but just bear in mind it is an industrial weight and standard piece of kit with hydraulics so good working discipline is important to your safety - trapping a finger in hydraulics isn't pleasant.

    You have got the Pre Heater and Horn the wrong way around. The one that has the button in it is the horn (upper one RHS).

    you have a pto oil leak. id start with changing the battery terminals around. thats where you start. that oil out the exchaust, id suggest fit the rotavator and put it to work, it should help seal the valves, reduce the oil out the exchaust,

      Thanks 👍 I've been trying to put it under load, in the hope that helps clear a few things up.

    very early tractor with no light switch which was an aditional choice when ordering a dexta from a factory, the heator and the horn are the wrong way around, the speedometer should go around anti clockwise, wrong seat and shouldn't have a steering wheel knob. the nose cone has been changed at one point, the reason i know that is because the at the side of it as a diagonal drop instead of a vertical drop. the bonnet has been reinforced at the exaust hole, the tractors had a loader on it at one point, the gear stick has got a bit added onto it.

      That's great, thank you. I thought it had been played around with in the past.

    Change injector pump oil for starters. Rear main seal on engine is probably leaking, not too bad to replace. Hydraulic oil might need a change, hydraulic return filter could need changing, to change filter requires removal of seat and lift arm cover as filter is internal and should be located inside of the hydraulic reservoir. I had a similar problem with the 3 point on my super dexta, previous owner had replaced seal with permatex and some had gotten into Pump intake and caused a restriction in oil flow. Pump could also be weak.

      you can't change the oil in the simms pump on the early deltas

    • @oldgoatsgarden4897
      @oldgoatsgarden4897 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your right and I'm wrong. I forgot about those having that specific injector pump, don't see too many of them anymore, see a few more of the later ones.

    hi, i wish i could help you but it would take me half a day to tell you what this tractor needs to sort it out, what you think is certain things on the tractor are not, to start with get yourself a good workshop manual it will tell you whats what, i have a 1959 dexta which is show condition, good luck with the restoration. by the way throw that easy start away, the dexta has a preheater fitted to start it thats the button that you think is the horn button which is missing

    • @AnnoyDad
      @AnnoyDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Thanks, yes there certainly is plenty wrong with it. Since the video went up, we've dug more into it. The preheat button only had the power in, and nothing out 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️ Certainly is taking some time to sort

      I have a 59 Dexta also. Not show condition, she's a working girl. Fully functional and used year round. Been in the family for 4 generations in Michigan.
      Perhaps take a video of yours and post it up. I'm thinking of doing the same.

    You are always onto something 🤣 question because I don't remember if you have mensioned that before, what about the red one behind? Is that tractor working as well? Seems to be in better condition ...

    • @AnnoyDad
      @AnnoyDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The red tractor next to this one, is an International Harvester and it sold back in October. However, due to covid and logistic issues, the buyer hasn't collected it yet.
      The other red one (dad cleaning his tools one) is a Massey Ferguson 35, and will be my next project 👍😎

    Might sound a bit daft but if you are looking for leaks, tape some small squares of kitchen roll to the bottom of the tractor with tape to find them.
    Makes it easier to find the exact spot.

      @@AnnoyDad if I reverse the battery do I have to reconnect all the lights?

  • @hch4nd13r
    @hch4nd13r 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The control box should be mounted behind the battery. Only visible when you take the battery out.

    • @AnnoyDad
      @AnnoyDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats the first time I've heard that. I'll have to go and dig around and see 👍

      the control box is just below the tachometer, the starter solenoid is just behind the battery.
