Most of the work with this game is sending out air patrols to locate enemy vessels. It takes a lot of searching to find them. Keeping an eye on Port Moresby from the air and sending Aussies to defend Milne Bay can be helpful, but the winning and losing happens getting troops, engineers, fuel and supplies to Guadalcanal. While sinking Japanese ships trying to do the same thing. Main Japanese staging port is Rabaul, helps to know which direction they're coming from.
how does the USA AI react to non historical moves? like for instance if i had to invade Milne Bay, would they still send supplies and troops to guadalcanal and not worry bout the invasion elsewhere?
I also usually send submarines fully loaded with a small unit of troops to all the uncaptured zones, give me more resources to spend on the war later on, and even though the zone of control is tiny, the zones can still spot aircraft.
Good to see you giving this one another try. I still think it will be another year before it's ready for prime time, but good to show off the improvements since launch.
Taff, you´ve managed to butcher not only names but your troops as well. Please read the comments and follow the hints others gave to you. Please! Subs are quite useless except for scouting. Level bombing on ships is useless as well, use dive bombers. Concentrate your resources in the beginning to one base, don´t spread them. Build airports and develop them as fast as you can to use more and better planes. Use scout planes as much as possible to spot enemy convoys.
@@foreverpinkf.7603 I have to disagree whole heartedly with part of this statement. I have managed to sink 4 enemy carriers, 1 heavy and 3 light carriers and significantly damage one other and several cruisers with my subs. Not to mention countless merchant ships. My next big step is to build up the Renell sea base so I can better service ships, subs and convoys with supplies quicker.
Hey Taff! Here is something that I did in my playthrough. I invested into getting a carrier at the beginning. The carrier brings a lot of flexibility when it comes to attacking enemy shipping. Recon is a must so as soon as the next day begins, start sending out recon planes to cover as much ground as possible. (Your cruisers can deploy sea planes) Also, aircraft machine guns can damage enemy ships with transport ships being the most vulnerable. But only do this when it's a lightly escorted convoy to minimize aircraft losses.
Torpedoes - ( from subs or aircraft ) anytime the Sea State is 5 or above, the smaller ships will be bouncing in and out of the water - as a result torpedoes will pass under almost 90% of the time. (2) Gato class subs have better radar. (3) Both your subs targeted the #4 cruiser (4) Run deep run silent after an attack and keep speed below 5 Kts to avoid baffles. (5) Scouts - send out 1 at a time with no ordinance - can keep sending out with No time delay. So you launch 8 B17s in 8 different patterns at the same time.
With submarines, I find it best to let them operate alone in separate from each other. I also like firing quite a distance away (4-5 km), and once I fire re-engage "Ultra-Quiet" moving away from the task force without cavitating. Also, the main difference between the US CAs is armour, firepower & speed are quite similar. Pensacola and Northampton have the weakest armour overall, then followed by Portland, then by Astoria/New Orleans. You'll have a better idea of what armour layout of each ship is by viewing the damage control section in the Tactical view. The best CA you have available to you right away is USS Wichita, mostly due to the improved firing arcs of her 127 mm dual-purpose guns and superior armour compared to her contemporaries, aside from Baltimore.
Effective defense in sims like this. Remain at P-Scope depth. Plan you torp usage. Whether in forward or reverse, steer away from enemy as close to 180 degrees as you can. When the enemy is chasing you you will both be on same course. Accuracy will be high. Fire 1-2 torpedoes when target is about 200-300 yards. Been using this in sub sims for years. Works well.
@Taff in Exile If there’s two things that I have learned watching play throughs of this game it’s that you need to get EVERY scout plane that you can muster deployed (from submarines to battleships) and have them scouting areas as much as possible till it’s like second nature. The other thing is that if you want to successfully conduct airstrikes on enemy warships and merchant shipping then you’re going to want to absolutely OVERWHELM the enemy AAA because that’s the only way that you’re going to be effective against larger groups of enemies, you’ve just gotta be relentless with your time on target attacks with multiple groups of aircraft from multiple different directions utilizing low level skip bombing followed up with relentless strafing using aircraft that range from basic fighters to twin engine aircraft like B-25s and A-20s and P-38s that come back to strafe after their initial bombing runs. If you download the Tokyo express mod for this game then you can get a much larger variety of ships and more diverse aircraft and no number on the amount of aircraft in an engagement! There's a reason level bombing was considered ineffective when engaging naval targets. Use your B-17s for ground targets like port installations and coastal guns/aa batteries (if they're even modeled in the game) and send flights of torpedo bombers or dive bombers against naval targets.
It might seem an amazingly silly oversight on the part of the game developers, but the fact is that you cannot bomb port installations and airfields from the air in WOTS. The only way to reduce the level of enemy ports and airfields is bombarding them from the sea, using CAs and BBs. This really effectively relegates the B-17 to the role of a long range reconnaissance role. Level bombing naval ships is largely ineffective, as you say, unless you get very lucky. Having said that, Wolfpack345 did try it once in his US playthrough and sank a Yamato class battleship with a direct hit from a B-17. But you really do need to get lucky.
Oh dear! Two Avengers v 6 Zeroes. No contest! The Torpedo attack put the wind up the Japanese forces in the area. Air patrol in the area was no surprise there.

Also, you can cover more sea quickly with planes and with less of them allowing you to detect enemy fleets faster and send groups of subs to attack them which will have far more firepower and a greater chance of removing multiple hostile ships from action permanently then a lone sub would have and any ships you damaged but didn't sink you could reengage or send bombers from your carrier(s) to mop up. @@vf-114jock2 No Naval or Marine aviator I know claims the title "pilot". Words mean something Jock. You can say U-boat for example and without saying anything else, any knowledgeable person would immediately identify that as a GERMAN submarine: not American, British, Australian. Titles mean something.
u copying wolfpack with that intro?
U boat ain’t an English term.
The big issue with this game is that it's a good game but the mods are so great that the base game seems meh in comparison
Yes, but it's nice to break your teeth on before going on to the monster.
@@vf-114jock2 well i mean yeah but mods really can change a lot, like 24 planes squadrons, doesn't seems like a lot only double the planes launched, but getting attacked by a carrier means true danger and attacking means you can sink a while fleet if you play very very well
How you cocked up with them torpedoes. Just don't play if your that bad
Both subs destroyed, a dozen torpedoes missed. This game is not for you my friend.
Don't waste your time on dds
You should definitey the Tokyo Express Mod.
