@@ghost_mall Nonsense. Black capitalism doesn't represent liberation for black people on the same grounds that capitalism doesn't represent liberation for poor whites: We can't all be capitalists because capitalists get their wealth from workers. It's the myth of Black Wallstreet that tends to point the finger at back people themselves, suggesting that we are solely responsible for our own oppression.

Cause it's unlikely he's out there with an AK-47 no matter how many lyrics he has about it.
But the legal system in the U.S is ridiculously corrupt in favouring rent seeking behavior (in this case literally) that it's absolutely hurting hundreds of millions daily.
So a landlord to most is not someone you've made a fair bargain with but someone you're forced to deal with in a rigged system to avoid being homeless without any proper alternative or competition because ownership is so consolidated by companies like Black Rock.

Definitely agree with what you said about the mixed messaging and how much Mike seems to contradict himself. The bars about broke haters and being a landlord made me roll my eyes, especially after the Kill Your Masters bars on the first couple of tracks. That song about teenage pregnancy and a summer love gone wrong is written in such a clunky way that a lot of what he says comes across as this really weird pro-life message that I don’t think he intended at all.
I don’t really agree that the sound of the album is Yeezus-like or even close to that type of experimental rap, especially for Mike. There is plenty of variety and interesting sounds but a lot of this album contains bits of soul and R&B that just go on too long and don’t really amount to a lot aside from a few really good performances. I gave it a 9 on first listen, then an 8, and that’s where I think it lands for me right now

I generally tend to agree with a lot of modern ideas to an extent but I've never liked how its biggest proponents are all so detached from the black experience, and react is familiar ways when a black person fsres to offer a different view. Some duds here and there but I don't think they outweigh the quality of the rest of the album. I think bars like "im a landlord, bitch pay rent" can be explained in a way that doesn't contradict the rest of what he's saying (the woke ass shit line was pretty bad though). He was likely just showing a bit more of his braggadocious side without much care for his sort of social activist side, which, for an album more focused on mikes personal life, is not unwelcome even if it does make it more difficult to differentiate these two sides of him. Hell, if you read into it deep enough you may think he's poking fun at himself, pointing out his own hypocrisy given all this braggadocious "ice talk" he's spewing throughout the record, which he more clearly does on Down by Law "I was so young when I stood at that store that I did not know that the money you paid me was meant for your babies and now they just poor, it was just business my N, I am not vicious my N, I had no vision my N, I wanted Gucci and Fendi my N, Guccie Givenchy my N."
Whatever, how you feel is how you feel, I was a bit underwhelmed too; nonetheless, Down by Law (my favorite on the album), Scientists and Engineers, Dont Let the Devil, Slummer, Motherless, and Shed Tears are some of the best hip hop songs released in years, all tied together by a central theme. Expressing why you felt underwhelmed by the *whole* album through mentioning a few inconsistent bars, which could likely be explained with deeper analysis and some charitability, doesn't seem to be a good justification, and I would be suprised if these minor inconsistencies were the central cause for your dissatisfaction. Like almost every problem you bring up in this review would be moot if Mike left Talkin That Shit and Something for Junkies off the album, are two songs really the major reason you gave a collection of 14 tracks a 6?

i enjoyed this album a lot more than you but i have too agree that there are some weird bars here and there also i hoped for a little more fire with the deep cuts but all in all i'm glad run and talkn that shit turned out to be the weakest on the whole thing

I really enjoyed this and I don’t have many complaints or criticisms. I wasn’t super into RUN but every other track on this album is really good imo. I love the features too and the production is nice and boom bappy

I don't think it's too boom bappy it's too overproduced for that

I’m a hip hop head. Been down since 79. Hip Hop has been shallow and repetitive in the last few years. This album has reset my faith in hip hop. This dude giving the review sounds like an outsider tryna get his misguided interpretation. FOH!

I initially thought you should have given this one a higher number but then I realized you're right and I've been listening just from SLUMMER to the end haha. Guess I forgot about the first half of the record that I skip, so good call. Definitely some bangers on here though.

Damn good album. Mike has been on one with RTJ for a while. Good to see that he took that time to refine his craft.
