WRITING A GOOD VOCAL MELODY (melodic shapes-sawtooth)

  • Writing a good vocal melody is hard. How do you write a vocal melody and what makes a good vocal melody? Melodic shapes can be a great place to start creating melodies for a song. They don't require you to know much music theory and can be a big part of making melodies express the emotion of the song and its lyrics. In this video, we look at how to make a good vocal melody using the sawtooth or zigzag shape melodic contour.

    These videos are meant to break down the songwriting process into easy to use tips, techniques, and tools that spark creativity and help you apply them like the pros. I do my best to make videos that share the 'secrets' of writing great songs without holding anything back.
    My main focus with this channel is to pass on the tools of the trade that I have learned and found to make a big difference to my creative flow and songwriting. There is an old saying that goes "everybody has one great song in them", I hope to show you that once you know what makes a song great, you can apply it to all the songs you write. Start from the heart, follow your gut, and revise with your mind.

    Never thought I'd say this, but you should add advertisements to your videos. They're simply too high quality to not be making good money off of them. Whatever Hooktheory is paying you ain't enough for how great these videos are. Seriously my favourite songwriting channel, which is amazing given how few subscribers you have (though I'm sure that will soon change).

    Some of these examples sound like a very slowed down trill. Which might be a way of approaching this conceptually.

    • @SongWritersChopShop
      @SongWritersChopShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great point Eduardo, I guess they would have to be slower than an average trill to be able to sing lyrics over. I also think they play a more central role than most trills and not as much of an "ornament" (not always of course). But approaching it in a conceptual way is the best way IMO. It's all about finding a way to think about these ideas in a way that makes sense to us individually. And then getting creative with them. The similarity between trills and this shape never even occurred to me, so thanks, it's given me some food for thought. cheers

      @@ThePhilipEffect I don't really know of any tbh. you could always go to onlinemictest.com and sing your melody.
      it will show you the notes you've just sung. then go to scaleschords.com and type in those notes and that will tell you what chords will go with your melody.
      I'd imagine in this day and age there are apps and sites that will analyze a song, I just don't what they are. let me know if you find some.

    Shouldn't you have used songs for the singers actually sing with feeling tipped through this point? Instead I heard a cover of Aint no sunshine by a horrible singer. And van halen But sounding like northern exposure. They are both awful.
