Lee Gordon was born on March 8, 1923, in Detroit, Michigan. While he was an American, his biggest success would be in Australia. He was instrumental in introducing many popular jazz and rock musicians in the country. During the policy of “White Australia” he brought opportunities to black American performers and helped fight against racial barriers.
He helped create some of the most popular musical tours in Australia and wasn’t afraid to take big risks with his career. At the height of the latter’s controversy, Lee Gordon wasn’t afraid to help book gigs for Lenny Bruce in Australia.
He also helped launch the career of the popular Australian rock and roll singer and musician, Johnny O’Keefe. This inspired Lee Gordon to manage artists and one of his biggest ambitions was to manage Elvis Presley’s career.
In retrospect, it seemed as if Lee Gordon was invincible. He was a legend in show business and the Australian music scene owes a lot to him - as did other entertainers such as Lenny Bruce. Yet, his final years were riddled with one problem after the next.
He had financial troubles and his show business career faced several hurdles. He tragically died at the age of 40 and his death remains shrouded in mystery. Sadly, with his death, his contribution to entertainment has largely been forgotten.
He’s perhaps not as known today as he was in the 50s and 60s, but his legacy certainly deserves to live on. Anyone who wants to know about those individuals who work behind the scenes in show business must learn about Lee Gordon.

I’ve heard a lot about him as my Dad was his business partner. Lee brought a lot of firsts to Australia and tried to introduce new things to a far away place. It was a great achievement and I think he deserves more credit.

As he passed away in November 1963 he never brought the Beatles to Australia. It was another promoter.

Have a very vague memory of this man and his name. It sorta rings a bell somehow probably because I read a lot. I was born in the 60s. Intriguing video indeed.

If it wasn't for Lee Gordon then entertainment might not had happened in Australia in such a way?, he was the first real entrepreneur in Australia's entertainment history to really inject & started it by bringing huge acts from the United States, if only he succeeded to bring Elvis Presley to Australia without Col. Tom Parker ruining the chance?... it would've been more huge & successful than The Beatles tour in 1964??, the old Sydney Stadium was the main venue for Lee Gordon's big shows during the 50's & early 60's & even opened his chain of fast food drive-ins around Sydney long before McDonald's & Kentucky Fried Chicken was ever thought of?, his untimely death in late 1963 was unfortunately not long before the huge explosion of The Beatles!, if he had lived on beyond 1963 & returned to Australia to promote that tour of The Beatles in June 1964 it would had been his biggest triumph & probably would've brought The Beatles back a second time??, who knows?, history might had been different if Lee Gordon had lived on??, just imagine?

Fairly sure that Max Moore, Lee's tour manager, mentioned Lee's kids in his book "Some Days are Diamonds'"
