Gurenge was one of the most iconic anime songs in 2019 and it became a massive hit song in Japan following the big success of Demon Slayer. To be honest, this song didn't get my attention for a long time until I saw LiSA's live performance of Gurenge on television last weekend. I was really moved by her powerful performance and I decided to make a piano arrangement after all.
Gurenge is also a spiritual successor of my Unravel piano arrangement, because I am using difficult piano techniques, which requires a lot of practice. But compared to my Unravel cover, this arrangement is not as notoriously difficult and instead, it features more three hand techniques for a more balanced sound.
Since this is a powerful rock song, I was using more notes in the deeper bass regions than usual, resulting in a massive sound on the piano. There were instances, where I was even using the entire keyboard of the grand piano at the same time. The best example would be the buildup moment before the chorus in 0:54, where both hands are jumping in opposite directions and playing the highest and the deepest notes simultaneously.
I also tried to imitate the rhythms of the drums as close as possible in the left hand. This results in a few unusual left hand patterns, such as the pattern in 0:40 and 2:58, where I am using left hand repetitions for the first time in a while. Especially the piano "guitar riffs" in 0:11, 1:37 and 3:49 are exactly the same as the original rhythm.
For the last chorus in 3:13, I was imagining just the drums playing and LiSA's voice is shining brightly in this moment. The focus is shifted to the right hand but at the same time, you can also go all out with your left hand and bang the bass keys as much as you want to create an exciting climax. The final jump in 03:55 also deserves a mention because the right hand has to jump over 3 octaves in order to hit the last E notes. It is indeed a risky technique, but once you can nail it, it feels incredibly satisfying.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun arranging Gurenge and I hope you enjoyed my piano arrangement! Starting next week, I will cover more recent Anime songs from 2015-2019 because the nostalgia Anime Piano series from my last few uploads has been completed.

But nevertheless, I still hope you you have enjoyed listening to my piano arrangement of Gurenge!
I have been living in Japan for almost a year now, but the popularity of Demon Slayer here is just crazy. It is virtually everywhere, collaborations with cafes, with convenience stores... there are even Okonomiyaki which is named after Demon Slayer Characters as a part of a restaurant collaboration. The Demon Slayer Manga has ended recently, but I am definitely looking forward to the upcoming Movie Kimetsu no Yaiba - Mugen Train which will be released in October this year in Japan! And hopefully a second season is coming soon as well.

I'm extremely glad you warmed up to Gurenge and finally decided to give it a shot :). Expectations exceeded. Chills the entire time.
My initial impression on this one was the utter smoothness of the sound, while still maintaining the raw energy of the original. Kinda like a perfect fusion of a Chidori and Rasengan (wrong anime, i know lol. Best analogy that came to mind). 1:23 was the first strong taste of it, in the RH lightning-like arpeggios. And then the second verse three hand technique came in (1:36) and honestly I just melted under the warmth of the sound of the RH countermelody. The lightning-like but smooth arpeggios continued to be scattered throughout, which continued to reiterate this feeling. Even the sharpest attacks have a rounded feel to them. Honestly speaking, Gurenge isn't really a "smooth" song by a long shot, but the way you performed/mixed it makes it feel perfect this way too.
An interesting repeated technique is the "vibrating melody" that is meant to imitate the guitar riffs (too many instances to cite, but 0:14 is the first chorus-end instance. 3:25 is another cool sustained one). I always find it hard to translate the "hard rock" feel of songs like Gurenge onto the piano, but these are spots that really carried that rock feeling really well.
My personal highlights:
- high register RH melody ornaments at 0:50
- the smoothness/cleanness of the entry into the first chorus 1:00, especially the way those last few bass notes roll
- the duality of the second verse. The warmth of the first portion (1:36), transitioning into a very crisp second portion (1:51). The entire second verse is my favorite section of this arrangement.
- the high register descending jazzy licks at 2:37
- the LH bass right before the final chorus at 3:07
- Every "lightning" arpeggio (deserves a second mention, lol)
This is the type of music that gets me motivated to hop right on the piano and start making music. Unfortunately, my piano is all packed up since I am moving today, but you can bet as soon as I unpack that I'll be right back at it. The sound of strong, sudden notes caught my attention. Night has conquered the blackened sky and it was unusual to hear music this late. What kind of fool would raise attention towards himself at this time of night? Does he not know that demons lurk the alleys of this city? Does he not worry for his life?
“Ciar, I’m going out.”
I locked the door behind me. A normal person wouldn’t care about others when the darkness has consumed the outdoors. A normal person would just stay where he’s staying at, no matter what screams or cries he hears.
I am not a normal person.
I follow the sounds of notes. They accelerate. They bellow. They do not cease. They do not falter. I am hearing great music. From a fool perhaps.
My small journey takes me to a small and shoddy home a street away from my home. I’m just gonna warn the pianist. I’m just gonna peek into this small broken window and say the words. Then I’m going to get out of here...
“Yo.”
As I peek into the window, a pale, but calm man greets me. It was the pianist. It was as if he was expecting me to come.

Words do not form as I hear the sudden howls of numerous demons. Where did they come from?! Have they always been here?! I jump through the window of the pianist’s home and I draw my knife. If I’m going to have to fight, I’ll need cover.
The pianist continues to play as if there was no threat looming outside. Did I really put myself in harm’s way for the sake of someone who wants to die? I shouldn’t have gone outside. I shouldn’t have even dared. Now I’m going to die together with this idiot.
I’ve wanted to do so much more in this life...
The demons roar as they burst in to the door. I see their blood-shot eyes. This is it. My final stand.
The pianist looks at me, grinning.
The piano notes accelerate and abruptly stop. With the end of his song, I feel a subtle ticklish feeling. I feel as if something just passed through my body. After a few seconds, I hear the shouts... no, cries of demons. They have suddenly disintegrated!
The pianist opens his mouth and tells me a couple of words I’ll never forget.

Animenz have more talent in his two hands than I have in my whole body. He is SOO talented.
This guy...wow. Amazing. Every single song is so perfectly executed and just listening to my favorite anime openings on the piano is an experience. Unravel was probably my favorite cover, even though all the songs give me chills.
It's good but not perfect
I kind of wanted to share my thoughts about this arrangement. I'm a hobbyist pianist, so I have absolutely no clue when people refer to explicitly musical terms, and I'm basing my feelings about it based on more intuition than anything. In terms of comparing this arrangement with Unravel, this arrangement didn't feel as 'busy' as Unravel did, with what seemed like slew after slew of techniques and jumps. However, it was still able to accurately convey the similar sort of energy that Unravel had, and not only that, it felt more streamlined-but without really losing the original music quality that the original song had. And it's no joke that I can literally hear the lyrics throughout the song.
Props, man. Props.
So after seeing this had come out, I held back on watching it until I had seen a bunch of other versions of the song on YT, just because it wasn’t a song I was all too familiar with. However, after listening to all of them, I can say with confidence that this is definitely my favorite one. It also helps that using a real piano makes everything sound better. Some amazing dynamics you got there.

I must say that the Japanese artists really put their heart and soul in their music. Even though this is a cover, I can feel the emotions that both the original composer and Animenz-san has put into this song and the other songs. Among all the Gurenge piano videos on TH-cam, I believe this one is the best, by far! My only regret is finding this video 3 months after it's original post.

Im gonna move out of my mom’s place in a month and I’m gonna take up piano. Pretty scared because tbh I want to reach Animenz’s level and nothing less. He’s been such an inspiration and I couldn’t care any less of whatever people tell me ( Ya right, good luck, lol, etc ). I’ll strive to be great.

good luck! but just saying playing the piano is not as easy as people think, u will need to have a lot of patience when you start learning a new piece, i have learnt piano for 8 years out of my 13 year old life and it has been frustrating and tiring but when you realize you can create such beautiful sounds in the end its all worth it!
