    The D-50 was my first professional quality synthesizer and the first synth I ever bought with my own money. I was in college, making maybe $50 a week. I saved up and bought it. I still have it, and it still works.

    Tha D-50 also had one of the early 24bit DACs. On the keyboard version it was a little more aliasing noise ridden though. The rackmount D-550 had the better DAC. So keep that in mind if you're looking for that 80s digital Mojo ;) That being said, i LOVE the D-50. And i will never part from mine. There simply isn't any other Synthesizer that sounds like it. Similar maybe.. but still not close enough.

  • @matthewgaines10
    @matthewgaines10 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Never heard this history of the Roland D-50. Thanks for presenting it.
    The Roland D-50 is a legend of sorts. Unfortunately, I probably will never own one but I do have it's boutique version, the D-05. Close enough for me.
    The problem with the D-50 is people forgot it was an actual synthesizer and if the presets were overused, you could always make more. The Yamaha DX7 had some of the same problem. People associated it to it's presets and ignored it's limitless possibilities.
    I wouldn't consider the D-50 workflow as simple. They made a whole separate plug in controller just to ease the process of creating/modifying D-50 patches. The boutique D-05 can also access that same controller.

    • @DyReckProductions

    Nearly bought this! What made it sound unique was it’s LA (Linear Arithmetic) sound engine. It combined digital samples for the initial transient attack as you struck a note, with more traditional subtractive synthesis as you held them. So you could still shape the sounds, but they sounded very “real”!

    Dyreck you are usually so comprehensive with your videos and because you normally review samplers you failed to mention what made the D-50 so Dope was it was Sample Based Roland a technology called PCM or AI technology which was a the Attack of a sampled instrument layered with a synthesized sustain to make it sound real before that companies would sample and loop the sample and have it fade which didn’t sound to natural when you started to pitch it. finnally sir what made Eric Persing so great is that they understood Midi implementation better than anyone in the world. They woule literally have every keyboard in the store linked and control whatever patch and feature midi offered.I so look forward to your videos bit you kinda missed the mark on this one. Also in Closing every company today still uses some variation of the technology that Roland created that produced the D50

    I think alot of the historical context is missing. Roland created their first digital synth, scrambling to have an answer to the DX7. And they did beat it technically- and usability-wise. But... the D50 is a monotimbral performance keyboard and the korg M1 came and crushed it. The M1 was a workstation, not just a classic synth. The d50, like the dx7, has no sequencer or drums, and can't do more than one part. Roland had to answer to the M1 with the D20, which removed some synth power but added all of these.
