The "bot made from junk parts from the garage" sure went a long way. Quite impressive, but that was quite a fitting 'end' to its run by Manta. Can't wait to see the monster vs be put to use again!

Hi Ray et al. Thanks for continuing to post these videos. It helps me appreciate the effort made (and needed) before and after each match. Have you ever had a picture or video where Stink Eye, Mortician and Tombstone are all together? I'm interested to see the different sizes of the bots if they were set next to each other.
Seems like for weapons, very low and wide drums and egg beaters are dominating at the moment. Wonder if a triangular bot with a drum on all 3 sides would be good? It'd be a lot of weapon weight if it's not compact, but you could also probably save a some armor weight. Just thinking about how opponents would have to take a hit no matter what angle they come at you from.
I wonder how a weapon like that would go on a Tombstone type chassis. Maybe even make the motor reversible so you could use the tooth as a tearing weapon or the other way as a battering type. Or have the weapon on an arm that lifts and raises like an excavator arm, so you’re able to reach over their weapon and attack them from above.
@@ConstantlyDamaged yeah, I’m sure a couple of linear actuators would be able to do it. Then you would be clear of your own chassis and in theory you could lift or lower the weapon to attack any area of another bot.
Those wear plates are made from AR steel, of which there are many grades. AR400 and AR500 are very commonly used for armor in combat robots. And you are right, it's a pain to machine and cut!

The vertical spinner is the best option. Just simple weapon, only focus to drive, not need to think something else. This bot weakness is still the wheel, and this battle clearly evidence of that.
@@RennieAsh Yes.. The wedge also the weakness, so the vertical weapon cannot blow the damage. I think later on the bots will be more vertical spinner than anything else. The hammer type gradually gone. Only remaining the horizontal spinners and flippers

I've seen tombstone keep going for almost 3 minutes while on fire, no other bot has been on fire that long that i can remember. Surely Stink Eye can walk it off
If we hadn't have been eliminated at this point, it would have been fairly simple to fix. Replace both drive motors and it would have been 100% functional again.
I have every intention of working with Mortician again, and it is complete and sort of combat ready. I'm sure it will see arena time again at some point.
There is Ripperoni, in the battlebots which is assymmetrical vertical spinner. Just check by yourself. For Ripperoni, I think the weapon is great, but the driving has some issue

@@shurmurray For the case, Ripperoni has some balancing issue. So, the centered weapon should be the best option to win the game. For kinetic energy, it will be some issue to the bot itself, regarding the impact of the weapon they blow to opponent. You can saw in tombstone, for clear example. So, the stability and balancing of the bot will the be one every owner of the bot should concern about.
@@irfanalakbar well, not centered weapon does not means the bot itself going to be unbalanced or uncontrollable after the hit. Vertical spinner placed in odd location will direct recoil downwards into the floor. But off-center location may give some strategic variants like feeding the weapon into the opponent by slight turn of the robot. Or feeding the wedge by turning in opposite direction. Should be fun to see such design in action anyway even if it turned out to be bad idea =)
@Shur Murray Ripperoni's weapon isn't at the center, it is a bit off the middle. But if you want a robot that has a very off-center weapon, you can check out Sidewinder.
No, it was never meant to be anything other than a show bot at Robogames. It did what I wanted, and at this point it's mostly going to be scrapped. I'll do something with the weapon disk eventually, but really the rest of the bot was just older junk laying around the garage :)

Can't wait to see you compete again next season, by the way. Tombstone easily became my favorite very quickly after I started watching.
The wheels literally stick out like a sore thumb and easy targets for modern drum spinners. Sorry Ray your my all time favourite since the first outing of Tombstone and you seem like a fantastic chap often showing true sportsmanship but with the new competition out there I think you may have to reconsider the wheels....
@@Staurcomb I've lost count of how many times the wheels have been removed from Tombstone which to look at hasn't really changed in almost 20 years ! Other bots have moved on, evolved and upgraded, some have redesigned completely to be able to compete with the new wave of weaponry we're seeing in the arena.
@Ray you're definetely one of the most intelligent and tactical drivers, but you gotta stop with the open-wheel designs. on this build, move the spinner more forward, use 4 "forks" to get under opponents and hide the wheels, it would be really great build. 4 forks, because a wedge can be broken quite easily, but if you have 4 forks or even 6, then there's very little chance that you lose all of them. if you'd make truly competitive builds, you'd be taking trophies left and right.
There is more to being in this sport than simply winning, and this robot was built for fun. I honestly didn't expect it to win a single match, so the fact that it went 2-2 at the event is a success to me. Could I have made something different, and maybe done better at the event? Sure. Would it have cost me more money instead of just using the junk laying around my garage? Absolutely. Would I have had more fun? I don't think so. Next year's Robogames I'll do something different. And right now I can't even tell you what that will be. I'm sure though that no matter what it is, the internet will tell me everything I did wrong!
@@ray9368 nice to see you check your comments and reply, it's rare nowdays. sure it's not always about winning, sometimes you just want to build something and smash stuff or get it smashed, but someone like you could do so much more. i've been watching combat robotics since the very first robot wars and i always facepalm at those totally useless drivers and bots that either fall apart on their own or just drive from wall to wall, it's not fun to watch those at all. but my point is that you definetely know how to drive a bot and it would be really cool to see you enter one of those series with a competitive bot. i've watched most of your tombstone bot fights and it's so awesome how you always out maneuver them and they just keep falling for it every single time. unfortunetely i never had enough money to enter one of those events myself, but i did build a bot long ago, it was a simple 6 wheeler (similar to old tornado, only with 6 wheels) and i also built it out of complete scraps. mostly i used parts from old cars, like starter motor and some timing chains. it was fun building it and i have also built some bots in various games (like razer, chaos 2 ..etc). anyway sorry for the long comment, i hope to see you back in battlebots one day, with a competitive build.

If you plan to stay in the game, then you're going to have to evolve also, my short pecker friend... Come with a better drum spinner than the ones in game... Maybe a drummer named Casket or War Monger... Teef that chew instead of knock to the heavens... Those botts get a lot of non self control dmg... Just sayn...

They did a great job recovering from that fire and you put on a good show.
Manta is an impressive bot. The weapon from Stink Eye can be still useful for a new bot or a new version of Stink Eye.
You're always a legend, Ray. But I can't stress enough how great of a team Manta is. I can easily imagine them winning a giant nut one of these days.

How about putting the weapon flat like with tombstone's ?
Excavator bucket wear plate. Can't drill it. Can only cut it with a plasma cutter or abrasive water jet. That should make some good robot armor.

Sure there is no shortage in ideas, but I wonder: is it feasible to build asymetric bot? With the weapon shifted to one side.

Manta gets a bot ontop of it and spins around and poof flat tires, never seen anything like it No one blames ya its a monster.
