I got to briefly talk with Tosin after AAL's first show in Dayton, OH at the Attic. We spoke about them not using a Bass player and he told me that their keyboard player (who was in the band at the time) was triggering samples and was playing bass parts to fill in specific areas. I always wondered why they never got a bassist once they fired the keyboardist. Supposedly they use backing tracks, but every time I've seen them since, it still feels emotionally flat. Javier is almost inaudible at times because of where he sits in the mix. 8 strings is low, but the frequency spectrum of an electric guitar through a guitar amp is so different from a bass. I think their mixes, both studio and live, would greatly improve from the inclusion of an actual bassist.
On this current tour, they're using UmanskyBass for their bass backing track on the older songs. How meta, Jacob plays in Intervals, then virtual Jacob is playing in AAL directly after 😂
i dont trust anyones opinion when they dont know what flat means. And if you somehow do know what it means and did use that right, im sure JAVIER REYES is Flat, and youre the only person who can hear it.

one question. did you export this and printed it as an audio track like you did in your djinbass 2 video or is this just the midi track that we hear in this example? Btw, excellent mixing, excellent explanation and presentation as always.
It would be cool to hear something other than a Djentwall bass with this kind of music. Nothing against them (I own one), but the sound has been done to death and it just sounds like a bass trying to be a guitar. Sean Malone from Cynic comes to mind. He has a really nice round, staccato sound in a lot of their songs, and it cut through the mix beautifully without just sounding like another distortion machine. It actually sounded like a bass.
@@drawolcyelsew This is just a factually wrong take. The modern darkglass bass tone is the best thing that ever happened to metal. Old metal had these fuzzed-up gutless inaudible basses you could only hear if they played right up the neck
I've had the pleasure of working with Sean a number of times. Creating a fretless virtual bass with him crossed my mind on occasion, before his tragic passing.
dude you do music production as well? i was like hey i know that guy in the thumbnail from sim racing, whats he doing over here with AAL caboom goes my brain
Hey Ermin! I found you originally on your sim racing channel and then happened by this video and thought you sounded and looked familiar! Who knew there are others out there who are into sim racing AND prog metal bass. Literally my two greatest passions.
So are you saying what he did didn’t help the mix? Because I’m a big AAL fan and I noticed in many of their previous albums they tried to compensate with a harder bottom kick drum which muddies up their older mixes.
Henry Silva? He's pretty good, but I'd say Arif Mobdolbaghi, formerly from Protest The Hero, would be a better choice. Maybe even the original bass player from As Blood Runs Black.
UmanskyBass is a lot more fully fledged. It's one of our generation 2 basses, with far more programming and articulation flexibility. DjinnBass is more 'set and forget' for when you don't want to think too much about programming.
Thanks for the video, great job. Is there really an advantage to using two separate compressors, vs just one that's been placed in two spots on the signal chain? Thanks and keep it up.
It's a good chance to use some alternate tonal profiles to balance out the sound. For instance, in this case the 1176 is that in-your-face saturated FET sound with very fast attack and release, while double-tap is a more transparent VCA follow-up. No rules against reusing the same compressor twice, though.
In the future please do this truBass technology with a bass guitar played with a pick like the Spector Euro 5 LX bass in Eurobass 2 - - - -> Eurobass 3. 🤞 I think you hit the sound of Spector Euro 5 LX very well. In fact I like Eurobass more than the clanky sound. And It would be the best to use a thicker string for notes lower than B0 or maybe A0 - it depends on the original string gauge too.
Hi Forsell! One of the big differences we believe is in our attention to detail during the sampling process. We have a round-robbin of 16 per note on the primary finger alternate articulation - EZbass has a much lower sample round robbin to our ears. Matched with our truBass logic, you'd be hard-pressed to find any V.I that compares with our level of quality. We multi-sampled the entire fretboard which gives you the ability to play the notes you want on the frets they are meant to be played on and we have a vast amount of articulations to choose from. You can learn more about UmanskyBass on our website www.submissionaudio.com!
I kept saying to myself... why do I recognise this intro jingle.... where do I know this from? Then it took me back to that last Carcer City release... great production ;) p.s. Umansky bass is lit.
I believe it's a VST instrument, not an amp sim, so you place it on a midi track and write the bass line on the grid. They sampled a real bass that we "play" via a midi track which we need to program ourselves
Hey Ermin, will you solo the bands on Pro-Q3 in videos like this? It helps to hear exactly what you're hearing/getting rid of. Also, how well does the humanize function work with loading two instances of the instrument (ie, one set to DI, another set to Grit)?
I never actually use that function when mixing, so it's unlikely. You should never run two instances of the instrument on top of each other in real time. You will get strange, unintended performances. If you're looking to multi-process, it's best to run off a single instance and split a parallel processing chain in real time, or simply print the bass performance into an audio file and then duplicate said file and process from there.
@@SystematicProductions Fair enough. I meant it would be helpful for the people watching (myself included). If both instances are getting the *exact* same MIDI information, wouldn't the only difference be the humanization not lining up?
It's hilarious how literally everyone thinks AAL needs bass, and there's a lot of very competent players who would love to join the band but even after all these years they don't have a bassist
