Thanks Amy & Vlad. It is good to see a new release from an old favorite band. To put this in perspective, this is 54 years after they released "Child in Time". I don't think this has received as much attention as when the Stones released their new album in October with a tour to follow, which is pretty impressive for a bunch of guys in their 80s (Keith & Mick) or near their 80s (Ron Wood). The Stones were just in the Phoenix area last month, although I didn't go see them. I agree with your assessment, it does still have the Deep Purple sound, but it doesn't grab me either in the same way "Child in Time" does, or like some of their other great classics that you haven't heard yet. I liked it, but it's far from my favorites of theirs, but I have only heard it once, so not really fair to judge yet.
What I thought it was missing was the dynamics and tempo changes of some of their earlier work. It was like so much of contemporary rock/metal in just being a wall of constant sound, which was reflected in the audio graph at the bottom. It lacked the changing and building intensity, dynamics and tempo. Hopefully some of the other songs on their new album will better reflect this characteristic. Still enjoyed and loved hearing this though. Great reaction.

This and the other single released two days ago, "Pictures Of You", are very promising. In my ears, best Purple for a while, although I have listened to everything they´ve put out since ca 1983 and all the recent albums have been good, too. We all know, that this can´t be going on for too long now, time is ruthless for everyone of us, but let´s enjoy new music from Purple as long as they do it and after that, their music lives on forever. What. A. Great. Band.

Deep Purple's recent stuff is very good and unfortunately frequently overlooked by many fans. "The Surprising", from 2017, is a song in the vein of the Child In Times of old, intense, dramatic, and with many different movements within itself, feels like going on a journey much like most of their classic stuff.

I enjoyed hearing you explain what you were hearing as we progressed through the song. And then, at 9:34, you figured out what I did as I watched the video. This is Deep Purple. There is nothing you, I, or anyone else in these comments that will tell them there's a better way to do it. What they do works. Trying to break it down to "da dum dum" isn't going to cut it here. This song gripped me INSTANTLY. The first time I heard it I could tell you how it went later. A couple more listens and I'll know the lyrics. Classic Deep Purple sound. It sounded as if Jon Lord was still playing. For you to call them "grandpas" is condescending. I wish my grandpa played drums for Deep Purple! This is an amazing song.

Wow, this is hard driving. A bit harder than I tend to seek out, honestly, though within the realm of where when I'm in the right mood, I enjoy it. And I do like a number of the lyrics I caught, and yeah, definitely has some familiar sound qualities. Good stuff! Thanks for introducing _me_ (and probably a lot of your audience) to a new-to-me(/us) piece of music, Amy & Vlad -- this turns the tables a bit, which is cool! :)

  • @boolsson4639

Another song written fast is "Black night" from 1970. Black Night has a story. The band had just done Deep Purple in Rock and was very pleased with it. But the record company said “There’s no single here”. The band said “We don’t do singles”. But the record company said that they did and booked time in a studio the next day and told them “Go and write a hit single”. Very easy. They tried for a couple of hours but couldn’t come up with anything, so they went to a pub instead. And had a beer or 20 and got really, really drunk. Later they came back to the studio. Ritchie was sitting on the floor playing Rick Nelsons Summertime. They all joined in and they jammed for a while. Gillan wrote down anything anyone said and used that as lyrics. Roger said “I don’t feel so bright”, before throwing up. That’s line two of the lyrics. They went home without a song or so they thought. The next day the record company called and said “What a great single you made yesterday”. The band “Single? What single? Did we make a single last night?” They had no idea. So if anyone can understand the lyrics and what they mean please tell Gillan because he hasn’t got a clue. The single, Black Night, went to #4 on the top 100 list.

This is beautiful, I’ve never heard it before.
But I think you need to give a listen to the album by The Moody , The Days of Future Passed, or, at least the song Nights in White Satin I believe The Moody Blues were the first to fuse orchestra and pop rock music together. You wanna talk about the long history, the lead singer of the band, Justin Hayward is still touring. Days of Future Passed was released in 1967.

One thing I find interesting in this video (Apart from Amy's analysis) is looking at the visualiser at the bottom. On most videos is a series of highs and lows, here it's just constant - is that the definition of "A wall of sound"? (Phil Spectre would be proud of that production!)

    • @Sinvist
      @Sinvist 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It's the definition of "loudness" which is common since the 90's. "The louder, the better." Vinyl masterings usually provide more dynamic range.

So, happy that you're reacting on this one ;)
Try to react on their newer single, "Pictures of You".
Solos, riffs and tunes, are like coming in from 70's.
It's like they pushed a button and rewinded back to the better albums, cancelling anything Steve Morse managed to create, and that's a good thing.
In short, I already feel these two songs are belonging to their older era and we're going to get one of their better albums in July ;)

    Hello Amy,
you said something very important, I think: There is a market for them! This is true and Steve Lukather (Toto) once explained in an interview, that all those "dinosaurs" that are still on the road and making music are still important, because "they can play their songs live on stage". All those new, young boys/girls with songs published through the internet are not able to perform their "music" as a repertoire, singing at least 30 min. continuously. Most of them cannot sing one song! But bands like Deep Purple can and the people love it!

Maybe it's just me, but I'd really dig to see them live and have a mix of their catalog. As fantastic as their old music is, I think the new stuff is really awesome too. I love Gillan's tone and dynamics, whatever he lost in range and power he gained in subtlety and tonal variety. I did get to see them with Blackmore during "The Battle Rages On" tour, and Gillan's voice was not in good shape back then. Yeah he had more range, but he has a clarity and variety that's really great. To me, their new stuff seems to have a blend of prog, metal and downright old school rock with a hint of 90s metal and grunge.
I guess I'm very biased since I have enjoyed everything they've done with Bob Ezrin, which is stark contrast to albums such as House of Blue Light / Slaves and Masters, or even the Bananas which while still strong lacks that extra drive I found here. It seems to me the phrase 78 years young really describes Ian Gillan and applies similarly to the rest of the band. They are doubling down on their knowledge but still take a few risks, nothing here one-dimensional.

  • @jukkaalanen
    @jukkaalanen 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Saw them live a couple of years ago for maybe the 6th time and no, you aren't losing much by not seeing them live. Gillan's voice really doesn't hold up anymore on stage. It's much more productive to focus on their good old days and I would recommend checking out their live album Made in Japan if you haven't already. One of the greatest live albums ever.

Love that you're hearing some more Deep Purple, but, after "Child in Time" and before this, there are lots of more-worthy tracks in their oeuvre to focus on. The jump from Ian Gillan being 25 to 78 is a big one, especially after what he put his voice through in the meantime. In their "modern" era the best song to do in my opinion is 1996's "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming" -- it has one of the most beautiful main guitar themes/riffs I've ever heard, created by the great Steve Morse.

100% of the people watching the video thinking to themselves when she claims she's not missing much by not going to a Rock concert "Oh my! You have no idea what you're missing!" 😂 When you already know the songs and they're a part of your growing as a person and you go and experience it first hand and become a part of it, of their energy and share it with thousands of others there with you, it becomes a sort of spiritual bond with you and the music and the band, a highly rewarding experience that goes way beyond what notes they played right or wrong that night. It's the kind of thing that gets under your skin. And even more with bands like Purple or Iron Maiden which I would recommend you actually to listen to them live, specially "The Rhyme of the ancient mariner" live from their "Flight 666" DVD so you can have a short glimpse of what I'm talking about. Blessings all the way from Mexico ✌️

Old, or perhaps better say long-established bands, face a tricky challenge. Their fans expect a certain sound and generally want to hear familiar or 'classic' material from their heyday. But they also need to create new music, often with new members. So do they simply become a nostalgia act, hiring soundalikes who can skilfully imitate founding members (an increasing number of whom have passed away) or do they go on breaking new musical ground with new creative input from younger recruits? If they do the latter, will fans follow them or can they gain new ones? Most older rock bands, like this one, seem to be following the former course of producing additional material in their established style.

Ian Gillan has a great voice. Simply compare it to Mick Jagger. Ian smoked and hit A5 pluses in his early 40s. That takes a toll but his voice is doing things amazing that only Gillan can do. I hear a young man that is still the greatest voice in rock history. If not for relationship troubles with Blackmore, rock history would have been different according to Jon Lord RIP. 😅

I’ve just looked at the UK album chart for 2023. Totally dominated by Taylor Swift. If you are looking for new recordings by old artists, Hackney Diamonds by the Rolling Stones stands out. The other older artists are compilations or re-releases I think. Of course music for the youth of today is to be found on Tick Tock or Spotify etc

Buongiorno.

No, no, not cutting it for me. My opinion, anyone else who really digs this, have at it and, of course, you are completely entitled to your own tastes.
I agree with Amy's very first words, I don't hate it, it is not terrible. Ian Gillan has been singing and very impressively for decades after Deep Purple's demise, not using the band's name and he sounds extra ordinary for his age now (I could only dream I could that good.... when/if I reach that age).
But this sounds like music by committee and is it really Deep Purple? One original member? And the original mission statement about unity is laughable, the band has been through so many line ups, there is no unity. And I don't believe that there was ever a five minute period in which John Lord and Richi Blackmore were not in total utter disagreement. And still, for me, there is no Deep Purple if it doesn't contain John Lord and the same for Richi Blackmore. Ian Paige is just barely replaceable, and even though Ian Gillan was not the original singer, for me, he's the only true Deep Purple singer, but he's there.
Someone wrote a decent but soulless rock song, then a committee researched recipes to determine what ingredients are in all old Deep Purple songs and incorporated them into this song, like a Hammond organ! Sales of a Million, or sold out dates on a tour, that's accomplished on the strength of the name Deep Purple alone.
Sorry, one band member at age 78 does not make for a resemblance of the great legendary Deep Purple.
Not at all a bad choice for this channel though, to explore and see what it is today and I appreciate it Amy and Vlad.
    Thank you.

Like that they still make use of the Hammond organ (or perhaps a synth with a Hammond sound?) which is one of their signatures. However, this song didn’t come close to their old classics in my book… Would love to see Amy react to more old Deep Purple songs like Smoke on the water, Space truckin’, Highway star and/or Hush!

I just find the stuff they have been doing since they got back together fairly boring, with a few exceptions. This is more of the same to me. All good if you like it, of course. The sound they have generated for years grates on me and I thought Morse was massively underused given what he can do. I also don't find Gillan's lyrics worth listening to and his nasal vocals since he wrecked his voice leave me cold. Glenn Hughes does more interesting stuff and stretches more. When I heard Gillan saying he listens to a lot of jazz and African music I thought what a pity he hasn't reached out in that direction more.

Good time but the guitar sounds the same as Morse and doesn’t do anything that hasn’t been done before also, Gillan has been reduced to talking and it’s like Ted the mechanic 2.0

But is this “Deep Purple” if there is no Jon Lord or Ritchie Blackmore? The keyboardist and guitarist sound like they are doing an impersonation of Lord and Blackmore. I’m not criticizing the tune, I guess it’s ok for what it is.
