    When my wife died 12 years ago, my friends convinced me I was depressed and needed medication.
    Fortunately for me, my doctor was near retirement and from the old school of medicine. He looked at me over his half rim glasses and said "What you are suffering is ordinary sadness. You are grieving. However, I am going to give you a prescription: Stop watching television, do not read newspapers and under no circumstances whatsoever ever listen to the BBC. Do this for two weeks and I guarantee you will feel much better".
    He was right. It worked. I highly recommend it.

      It amazes me out insane our society is, as if after the death of a loved one(someone we have spend a large part of our lives with and is essentially a part of us) we are suppose to immediately bounce back and be full of life(specially in an insane world).
      TV, news, social media, even the workplace are all psychopathic institutions that peddle insanity. It is hard enough to live in an insane world under normal circumstances for a sane person(insane people have no problem) but add to it the normal negative life events can make it unbearable for some.
      Drugs never help, they mask symptoms while creating new problems. You were lucky you had a sane and intelligent doctor. Part of what makes us human and makes us stronger is going through the trials and tribulations of life(hopefully because it's to prepare us for something bigger). Our societies have developed a neurotic "solution" to these problems... make more problems. e.g., if you can't solve one problem(such as the death of a loved one) then hell, maybe you can solve it by creating more problems. What then happens is the most insane of our societies advance to the top with their "solutions to problems" dragging us all further in to oblivion. As things get worse(from their own doing) the solution is to make things even worse in an attempt to mask the original problem... just like the drug, it never works.
      If we, as individuals, lead sane lives such as living a full and loving live with other human beings then when someone died it would be far less of a hit to us. We would be able to accept the change because life was fulfilling and the fear of the unknown wasn't constantly beat in to us by those who rape and pillage our minds, souls, and experiences.
      Every human knows that eventually the time will come for them, for everyone they know. Death is the most established fact known to man(it is the one thing one can rely on). But when one has a relationship(a sort of chemical bond) and it was not completely fulfilled then there will always be the "what if's" or "I wish I should have" or whatever and the "what will I do now", "am I next", etc. A sane happy society helps alleviate these so they are rather temporary. Distractions work but it has to be of the right kind, not the kind that distract one back in to the same emotional feedback loop.
      Humanity has done so many things right but also so many things wrong. Technology/science has excelled but emotional and psychological problems have only grown.

    • @kebabfoto
      @kebabfoto ปีที่แล้ว

      This is an advice you should listen to if you're not actually depressed and not leaving your grieving stage. Coming from the old school of medicine can be very helpful but just remember that we didn't actually know much 50-60 years ago. The area of medicine has developed a lot and sometimes our science is wrong, sometimes doctors are wrong and sometimes there's a monetary incentive too involved.
      But overall it is clearly evident that hospitals are saving more lives now than ever before. So while it's healthy being a sceptic, don't lock yourself into thinking something out of spite, nature doesn't care about your feelings and will kill you if you don't try to make rational decisions in time of need.

    • @counterintuitivepanda4555
      @counterintuitivepanda4555 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kebabfotoThat was not his point. Medicine has obviously progressed since the past. Depression, however, is a phenomenon which is growing much more rapidly recently. Therefore, some people can confuse natural sadness with depression. Depression, in this case, would be the inability to properly grieve. Medication which would supress the symptoms, would have made it worse. What the overall point is is that we have lose the ability to "grieve" about things. Even simple things. As such, they build up and get worse which causes depression.

Now that I have finally started to make the steps to be out in the world again, I have to isolate myself again due to the pandemic. I did NOT allow my quarantine period to go to waste! I am a writer, and would like to my book on the shelves of bookstores someday. Before quarantine, I hardly had written anything. I wrote daily, sometimes for hours on end. I also engaged in other literary pursuits. I embarked on a self improvement journey, which provided me with resources and time to grow and to discard old, unhealthy habits. Isolation is hard, but I got through it. I also found this channel during that time.

    Can't tell you how much I needed to hear this right now.
    Anxiety and depression as well as subtle hints of psychosis started creeping their way into my life recently, after not having any experience with them in around 8 years. This had started a couple months before this whole pandemic, but was exacerbated by it obviously. I think a fast is in order. From everything, from the world. Luckily, I am self employed and have the ability to put everything on hold if need be. And right now, it needs be. To those suffering from anything similar, the advice this video gives is your way out. Take a step back, stop for a moment, catch your breath, and refocus. This too will pass.

    Brilliant insight to skills we all need to develop in these dark days. However, most people's lives have been so predictably safe, boring and "normal" up until this crisis that they have no idea what's happening around them or to them, so it's just a fight to stay sain, and some will loose that fight. A fortified mind is like a fortified immune system, it needs to be exposed to adverse conditions to become strong and resilient.

    Sometimes is from crisis and difficulties one goes through that one creates or discovers amazing things. Our society tries to makes us believe that the objective of life is to minimize suffering and challenges and that makes us weak and lazy. I won’t suggest enjoying the suffering, but deeply analyzing it and reasoning when going through it is already a great start.

Im lucky ive been into these kinda topics for a long time so ive been managing to see my reactions to the situations going on and process them and my reaction in a positive way. If i hadnt got into psychology and working on myself and talking to people about it, i would have broken down. I tend to get recommendations to your videos at the right time. 2020 is shaping up to be an interesting year for me. I had quit drinking just as the coronavirus arrived on our shores and I have been sober six weeks.
    The People's Republic of California is not as restrictive as it appears to be during the quarantine so I will spend this time off developing the habit of exercising at a nearby park. I also have time enough at last to finally read Joseph Campbell's "The Hero's Journey." I have learned from three episodes of the Twilight Zone that time is valuable capital and should not be wasted; I will not despair over my vision since my glasses are made of a sturdy material.
    I have seen every film and television program so my relationship with most electronic entertainment has come to an end. I am thankful for the Nintendo Switch being sold out so I do not clutter my home. I have not owned a television in seven years and I do not miss the glowing beast.
    I have plenty of time to think so I will try to develop healthy habits and see if there is anything I can do expand my mind. If anyone reads my post please comment with suggestions.

      I still drink caffine (I honestly don't think it really affects me much unless I'm just plain exhausted anyway), but apart from using Facebook Messenger for casual conversations with close personal friends and using TH-cam which may or may not count as social media, I've almost completely stopped using my main socials (though mostly Facebook) that often brought a lot of unnecessary stress into my life. Not that I'm now free of stress, but I've gotten rid of a major outlet for it that was completely unnecessary and self-imposed, and I think my life is also better because of it.

    Thank you for this. IDK how much I can get out of this, but still. I can't do any proper work at home. In fact, about 2 years back, it took me a lot of time to find a proper environment to study in, as home was hell. A few years back I had terrible terrible fights at home with parents almost every day for a long time due to medical reasons(they wanted me to take alternative medicine and I refused) and now I can't really function at home properly. Not only distractions, but I just feel terrbile at home all the time. Only thing I am able to do right now is to just waste time away. And when I do any work, I can do it for 2 or 3 hours tops and then I just cant anymore, get very distracted and often depressed. So the solution was to get away and do the work elsewhere, which worked WONDERS! I mean it made me believe in myself and I was able to actually do something for myself for the first time in my life. I was able to make baby steps at becoming a mathematician.
    So I was able to restart my life due to being able to do the work in the library and on campus, but now I am quarantined at home. I have been trying to work hard, stay active and exercise for weeks now, but couldln't and already fell ridicolously behind. The UNI acts like nothing happened and gives us just as much work as always, but those of us that are almost completely reliant on going away from home to work, are having a really hard time now. Believe it or not, that is a LOT of us. All the people being like "oh now you have so much time!", yeah if you have a normal job, but UNIs are like nope you do your work from home... Not to mention that online classes are NOT the same as real classes.
    I keep trying and won't give up, but now Im weeks behind in some classes and at least a bit behind in all classes. Therefore I'm scared of failing this year. Now if you are in some place like US, failing isn't anything but having to pay another year of tuition, but here things don't work that way. I have free UNI, so if I fail, I am out! Which means that I will have to get a job, which will be impossible with my education. Also I LOVE math and I am giving it my all to master it, but this situation is ruining everying. Last year I only had 2 weeks of vacation, so that I could study more and it paid off and I have a solid 9.4 out of 10 "GPA", but Im scared of failing now, cuz of the terrible situation. So tbh I'm honestly thinking of ending it all if I fail this year, as I can't burden my parents either.
    Just wanted to vent a little. Call me edgy, call me emo, call me whatever, IDC. Have a nice day everyone and stay safe.

      You should listen to your parents regarding the alt meds, allopathic medicine doesnt give a f*ck about you, its all about keeping you on the precipace of functional (idk if you can even call it that) just so they can reap the cash... most western doctors wouldnt dare give their own children anything they prescribe... Our society creates our problems via lifestyle and presents a "solution" all to keep the insane circus running... My wholehearted opinion without knowing you... Turn to God - genuinely and seriously.... Faith is the Key to Serenity.. no drugs, no garbage.. Genuine Faith has been on a steady decline over the generations while "Mental Illness" and "insanity" is on the steady incline...
