You know when I was 9, this story made me believe the dad was bad and so was silver crescent, the mom was good and Yellow star was also good. Now that I’m older I see now that it’s the opposite. Man. This really does show kids are impressionable.

This is exactly what I did when I was younger too. It’s almost trippy how accurate Celestia’s speech at the end was. I remember I rewatched it throughout the years and I actually started catching on to it all.

Due to the way Yellow Star is written, the audience can view Yellow Star as nearly any kind of person based on assumptions they make. Maybe she's narcissistic and manipulates her mom into bullying her sister with her. Maybe she's the kindest person ever and doesn't understand why her sister acts obnoxious at all and why her mom is cruel. Maybe she's the nicest pony ever and can't stop her mom from acting cruel. All we get to know is what happened and you can assume basically anything about who the characters actually are. To know who's good or bad, you would need more.

Big Mac has a female's voice In MAS Canon, ThrackerZod therefore has an extremely feminine voice. I'd imagine the equivalent for us would be listening to a Valley Girl talk. There's a specific tone that goes above and beyond there. That is what TharkerZod actually is. Which, probably is why everyone trusts her as a matter of course. They likely underestimate her severely due to the excess femininity in her voice.
My interpretation of Celestia's speech at the end: While we the audience, along with Celestia, see something deeper into the story, namely how one pony is so caught up with how perfect she is that she (probably) hurt her sister and encouraged their mother and the town to hate Silver Cresent, the story the author wanted to tell, and the one Twilight reads, is free from that subtext. Twilight, despite how mature she thinks she is, still retains her innocence and doesn't see how terrible Yellow Star can be seen, nor that this possibly is the story of the childhood of Celestia and Luna. That is why she sees Yellow Star as cute and innocent, rather than a tyrant in the making. A fact that Celestia (an adult) admires in her.
That isn't admiration. Celestia is strongly implying to Twilight that there is subtext that she missed, that very subtext that Yellow Star was becoming a tyrant. "A shame you didn't finish reading."SO much is unsaid in that one line, and the glare, and Twilight picks up on THAT subtext right away, you can see it in her eyes. Celestia is here saying "you stole my book, I know you stole my book, and you even read some of it." Twilight responds by feigning stupidity, and Celestia accepts this, knowing it was brought on by exactly the terror she was aiming for. "No telling when subtext will defeat the facade of a thing." A veiled threat. If Twilight doesn't watch it, she's going to get to see that inner tyrant.
Not just that...throughout the video it is implied that Twilight is similar to Yellow star in terms of being gifted with power. Her friends comment on how they feel sidelined and useless compared to her, she belittles and disregards Spike & RD, and at the end her friends let her burn down Applejack's barn for fear of incurring her wrath.
Huh.. I never noticed that before. I honestly got a lot of Celestia and Luna vibes from Yellow Star and Silver Crescent. Well, on the surface, at least.
It took me almost THREE years to realize that Yellow Star's mom could possibly be the pony version of Lauren Faust. Which would make sense since the whole story of Yellow Star is supposed to symbolize the dynamic between Celestia and Luna, and since they don't have parents confirmed in the series yet, Dawn just used their actual creator.

Overall this is the most straight adaptation of the fanfic presented so far but there are interesting differences (other than the ones made to make the episode funnier) 1) There was no implications of Silver Crescent being abused in the original fic, and she was labelled as Star's "friend" rather than explicitly her sister. 2) Their father didn't show up until after their mother had died, and there was no big gap before that event. The drama was about the supposedly perfect Yellow Star facing an obstacle she couldn't overcome while here it seems that their father was directly responsible for her death. 3) The illustrations were shown to improve dramatically as time went on, going from basically stick figure to really detailed watercolor. 4) Yellow Star had one goal (get Twilight to turn back the pages and return her to her simple life) and Twilight had another (finish the book to make Yellow Star a real pony, which would have real consequences but Yellow Star herself wasn't actively malicious). Here it seems like it was some kind of summoning ritual. Honestly I like that idea because the title of the fic referenced proto-Lovecraft but the horror didn't feel that Lovecraftian. 5) Princess Celestia explicitly said that she wrote the book in the fan fic. Change 3 was likely done to simplify the animation but the others have interesting implications. Adding Lovecraftian themes to MAS is nothing new but now it's directly connected to Celestia herself. That plus the added abuse seems to explain how Celestia became the abusive tyrant she is today, as well as why the cosmic sisters are so powerful

In this video the book pretty much influences the characters unabated and with far more mystery without the librarian character.
ImmaLittlePip From the comments I read in the original fic half liked the character and his comeuppence in the end. The other half believed the antics between him and Rainbow Dash were a distraction from the far more interesting main plot. I'm in the latter camp.

The CMC is often compared to PPG.
This is my interpretation of the backstory of Celestia presented in Star In Yellow, what it says about who she is. What is the one unifying theme behind everything we've seen of Celestia throughout the MAS/RDP series? What is it that she did throughout her childhood? She plays games with ponies in which she makes the rules. In her twisted sickness that she raised her eldest daughter to have, Yellow Star's mother let her do this, always giving her everything she wanted. She was always right, always the best pony. The subjects had to play by Yellow Star's rules. Her mother bred her a psychopath. Meanwhile, her mother always said Silver Crescent was a bad pony and in her twistedness "did punishments to [Silver Crescent] in which [Silver Crescent] couldn't see." Now look at that page that's crossed out, the events "that probably didn't happen" according to the apparition (12:51). "Father made fun new games. Yellow Star changed the rules. Father made rules for Yellow Star (!!). Ponies Did Not Become Ponies." Celestia was raised a de-facto omnipotent psychopath. All she ever did was play games with ponies in which she made the rules. Equestria was her playhouse and ponies her dolls. When, for the first time, ponies were no longer dolls, she did not have the vocabulary to express it. When your word for "pony" and "doll" are the same, you cannot even express "Ponies did no longer become dolls." To this day, all of Celestia's games with Twilight, the game of her Machiavellian-Orwellian nightmare state, the games she plays with the "comedians" in the dungeons beneath Canterlot that her mother built, are, as in youth, games in which she makes the rules.
uh no clearly this is a story about how celestia and luna were born in this story within a story, it claims they were literal star creatures made into ponies...which probably has something to do with the sky pony being their father...but not actually being a pony. Discord maybe took some stars and made them into ponies for the mother? Not sure. Then being discord he sent dreams to luna and told her she was good to get her to fight with her sister celestia and then controlled them both making them grow wings in exchange for something else...maybe the mother was killed by discord or whatever this thing was in the story. This would explain why they do not like anything about him but they don't destroy him...because he saved them from being abused by their mother.

Fun note: in the original fan fic, the "eye lasers" part was something Rainbow Dash had written in her fictional novel that she wanted Twilight to edit.
Ya know, instead of focusing on the metatextual implications of the storybook, I find myself being more intrigued by what this episode says about the characters. RD may be a blissfully-ignorant idiot in this series, but she really is the best out of this entire cast, whereas Twilight may actually be the worst out of all of them. Spike is a browbeaten cynic, Rarity is a narcissistic sociopath, Applejack is a depressed alcoholic, Fluttershy is a passive-aggressive inferiority complex, Pinkie Pie maybe a perverted psychopath with delusions of grandeur, and Celestia may be a remorseless tyrant, but Twilight is the one that I find particularly contemptible, because even in the context of this twisted interpretation, she's smart enough to *know better* than this. She has all this knowledge, all this expertise, but since because she refuses to climb out of her own head, refuses to ever place herself in anyone else's shoes and see things from another person's perspective, she instead just sits around, uselessly griping and condescending to everyone she meets. She SHOULD be the most perceptive out of all of them, but this is the second or third time she's been easily manipulated into potentially life-destroying situations, and she's learned nothing from any of those experiences, because she's incapable of seeing the forest for the trees when she won't look past her own damn nose.
I believe it was pretty much inplied that Yellow star and her mother where bad ponies, and silver crescent was actually the good one, and was trying to stop everything.
I loved this. it felt more serious than most rbd episodes, them peing parodies. I've never read the origional but this felt like it fit within the dawnsomewhere headcannon. It's obvious that the story is of cilestia and Luna, but another thing is cilestis seemed to reasonable in this. I actually like it. it felt more like a "hour long special".
a young child sees things differently than an adult, they go back and 're-look at their lives and realize the truth. cilestia is haunted to this Fay about her sisters abuse and her forcing people to be nice to her.

THe Fanfiction's roots show quite well to any familiar with Lovecraft. And even without that context, the subtext is quite telling of the truth there-in.
In the original fanfic, the book was actually the diary she wrote when she was a filly. I can’t exactly remember the full details of the fic, but naturally the details in her diary were very far fetched and biased as she wrote it when she was a filly. This book had some dark magic in it, however despite knowing the potential danger it could bring, she still kept it anyway as a remnant of her childhood. Also nice starfox pfp ^^
@ciara4377 Yeah, I found the fanfic shortly after, and I love it quite a bit. It's pretty twrrifying overall, and I found it at a very difficult time in my life where I was dealing with emotions and trauma very similar to that young Celestia, and it hit even harder. Good fic.

This is the only time where Celestia seems more open and vulnerable to Twilight. Celestia sounds regretful of the filly she was, and seemed to hate her past self. Twilight couldn't see what kind of monster Celestia was as a filly, which Celestia herself warns about. To Celestia, Twilight is still immature, so she tells her straight up that not everything is at it seems and that there's a lot of subtext Twilight missed. It's essentially Celestia giving Twilight advice about seeing past the facade of innocence and bias.

Idk if the creator will ever read this, but I would like them to know that this series meant at lot to me as a young artist. How effective the storytelling was in spite of the limited art style really helped me as a beginner to shed my perfectionism and my fears that my drawings couldn't ever be good enough.
It's based on the classic horror novel the King in Yellow, which is about a play which will destroy the world if completed by summoning Hastur, the actual King in Yellow, who is some eldritch abomination (okay, that's never specified in the original book, where Hastur is a play, but it's been accepted since then by other writers). Way better than any lame creepypasta.
5:46 *WELP, TOO LATE.* Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, there lived a young mare named Twilight Sparkles. She sure loved her books, all kinds of them. Some say she's a little obsessed; you almost never see her a day without engulfing herself in one. Whenever she has a bit of free time, she'd take a random book to have a nice quick read. Other times when she is in the mood, she'd lie down on her bed and surround herself with long, large books. Most of the time, she reads in the privacy of her tree house, where a lot of books are stored. Sometimes though, she'd be a bit daring and read in the public. One time, one of Twilight's friends, Rainbow Dash, was injured and put in a hospital. She was beyond bored there. Twilight personally was a soft and romantic reader. In contrast, she knew Dash was a fast and loud mare, so she have her a hardcore action book to entertain her. At first, Dash was shy and reluctant. She'd only do it when nobody was in the room. Over time though, she softened up and was open about her reading habits. She then moved on to other types of books, from funny and comedic ones to smart, informative history books. Except Twilight thought that Dash's reading skills were horrendous and she doesn't deserve such quality books to be given to her. Now when ever Rainbow Dash goes to Twilight's library to borrow books, she'd only give the lame, short ones. (They look more like pamphlets). Dash became absolutely offended on this attack on her dignity. Rumors spread the entire town. Now, whenever Dash leaves her home, she'd be ridiculed at her impossibly terrible abilities at reading, and no more books is given to her. She soon became a bookless mare and spent the rest of her days shut in her house, eating tubs of ice cream and watching Korean drama. . *THE END*
Technically it is. Its Celestia inserting herself and telling about her life threw her own eyes... This story gets a lot darker when you think about it.
The manifestation of Yellow Star is magically created demon that would have been unleashed if the book was finished, but Yellow Star in the story is Celestia.
I felt a bit left by this ending, like I book I never finished reading and made into a sculpture. I will never know what happened in the end, but when I look at the book on the self, it always leaves me wondering what could have happened.
It turns out that it's Celestia's book, written about her life. It starts happy and cheerful about basic stories featuring Yellow Star (Celestia). "We must save this puppy! We have to save the town! We need to stop this fight!" etc. But slowly, it becomes much darker and Yellow Star's life starts falling apart. First it starts with Yellow Star's mother "going to sleep" and never waking up. So they have to go on an adventure to save her. But it doesn't work. So they have to go on another one. But it doesn't work. This goes like four times until Yellow Star just gives up, weeps, probably. Then her father blames her for his wife dying, ultimately leaving forever. Along the way, she gains more powers, like becoming a pegasus, and then an alicorn. Silver Crescent is her best friend, and one day, Silver turns on her. Saying Silver should be the popular one, she should be the one that's loved, and pretty, and special. She says she'll get Yellow Star back one day and Silver runs away. One day she does come back, as an alicorn too, but I think the story ends quite quickly after this, because the book starts burning. It's much more dramatic in the actual story, Yellow Star urges Twilight to read on, complete the book before it's swallowed by flames. So Twilight tries to, but can't because she passes out from smoke inhalation. She wakes up in Celestia's castle where it's revealed that Yellow Star dragged Twilight out of the barn before Yellow Star was suddenly engulfed with flames (Because the book was burned). At Celestia's castle, it's revealed that Celestia wrote it about her life, her mother, her father, and her sister. Not much sure what's the rest about it though. I read this a long time ago, basically the day it was revealed in an article they were making it, which was about a year ago. I don't remember all the fine details, but it was really good. I wish they had kept some more of the drama in it, but that's OK. I'm just glad they brought it back for one final adventure. The art was nice, and so was the writing. So I can look past a little nitpick. I suggest reading the actual story if you want a more indepth tale. The part were they talked about the mother "Falling asleep" was depressing, because, y'know, it was seen in the eyes of a child who, before, solved nearly every problem they faced and made everyone happy. But this is one problem they can't fix. Anyway, I hope that helped, and tell me if I forgot anything!
Come on, we all know there's only one ending this story could have, especially the one from the video above. Yellowstar opens a portal and throws Silver Crescent to the moon/Hell/R'lyeh/take your pick of shitty place, and maybe feels guilty afterwords. The original story is more vague on this but is somewhat predictable because it is based on celestia's life, but it could really have gone either way, with yellowstar or Silver Crescent winning.
I dont know if you are joking but if not, the RDP is based on the Fic Star in Yellow and Yellow Star would become real when Twilight would get to the End of the book.

The backgrounds in this show look amazing. I know it's kind of a weird thing to notice but in my opinion I think it lookes much cooler than the actual show
The use of lighting is stellar. Dawn Somewhere really know how to utilize the light of a room and the mysterious darkness of shadows to tell a story. The original MLP does not have that. Its nights can be pretty, but are just as vibrant as its days.
Bloody brilliant. The subtext imposed by an adult empowering an otherwise simplistic story to the point of consuming the reader... what was the fire, then? How did it end?
Twilight found out that Celestia had written the story, and Twilight wrote her own story in honor of her dearest friend, Yellowstar. (I read it. It's very good)
It ended with Yellow Star banishing her sister into the "hole in the sky," and her Lovecraftian abomination of a father going back to his home "beyond the stars." Then she grew up to live as a tyrant over the ponies in her kingdom, periodically taking particularly cruel interest in some of the smarter of them, granting them title of "student."
Some ponies say I am not good at hair but that is because the wind goes very fast. But they are wrong my hair is pretty. Once this one time I met a dragon! I made that dragon go back to where it came from. Sometimes when ponies get into arguments they post the script from that bee movie. I think Seinfeld got a bad reputation because of that movie but he's still funny. Once I broke the time barrier! There was an explosion!

I thought Azathoth was Celestia's father in this universe so wouldn't the monster that was pretending to be her father in the book end up being Azathoth. So Luna became nightmare moon under Azathoth's influance, how Celestia became how she is today is still unknown. At least that is to my understanding of what happened.
She became the way she was because of her family. The mother was made out a abusive cruel woman that punished her sister and the main character, did not see what was wrong and lived where she had complete control. So she learned evil and didn't see how it was wrong.
I seriously think that this could be your guys' masterpiece if it was a bit longer. I seriously think it could be that good. The mixture of your sense of humor and the original story was great. frankly this fell apart for me at the end and I didn't "get it" until I read the story. I doubt you'd make a redux or something bc I understand how hard this was to make, but that'd be really cool.

am I the only one who's reminded of that Teen Titans episode where Raven reads a book possessed by a really powerful sorcerer and gets tricked into releasing him only to find out he's evil? Maybe that's why this story attracts me so much; that episode was awesome :D
And they're both supposed to be the most mature or smartest characters of their respective groups, so it adds insult to injury when they get tricked like that.
20:20 I think Celestia's response to the "lesson" Twilight learned is my favorite moment. It's like, "You are sufficiently terrified of me, so I'll let this one slide."
I keep coming back to this. It's just so amazing seeing the amount of improvement in quality since the first RDP. The writing and animation are amazing. And the humor is the kind that sticks with you and chuckle at when you spontaneously recall it during a random hour of the day.
I haven't been apart of the Brony fandom since 2014; but every so often, I come back to Dawn Somewhere and specifically this video because of how well it's put together.

this is easily the pinnacle of what friendship is magic created and left behind, alongside haunting nightmare. maybe spiderses brought me to this yt series, and maybe my little dashie reminded me to return. but this is the best. by a VERY long shot.
As a teen, when I first watched this, i never really understood Celestia's speech at the end. Now as an adult, I think I understand it a lot better. Twilight was fooled by the book, as like a child, she knew no better and took Yellow Star at face value believing she was pure and innocent. She ignored or didn't see the subtext that didn't coincide with experience that would expose the lie. The lie being that Yellow Star was innocent and Silver Crescent was evil. Most adults would see right through the lie, a child would not. Twilight, despite all her knowledge and being "superior" than her friends (in the MAS universe) still has critical thinking skills akin to that of a child. And that is the perfect kind of underling, one that will not question nor contradict Celestia's intentions. That's why she is Celestia's student and why Celestia likes her.

Hey I Greg. I'm crossing my fingers in hopes of you seeing this. I've been watching your videos since I was a kid. I was about 12 and remember being in the passenger seat with my mum on long road trips with her. I remember your videos keeping me from boredom and I loved them so damn much and it's weird because the humor found in these animations are far from what a 12 year old would typically like. But I watched them back to back every day. (Even downloaded them on my iphone) back when there was apps that could let you do that. I just want to thank you. I'm 17 now, and I still watch these and quote pretty much every line from every video. These are literally my childhood. 💛

Good on you Drawn for keeping those themes prevalent in this amazing parody/comedic retelling Is it me or are there some serious lovecraftian themes to this? The surface level demonic ritual stuff is pretty standard, but the title seems like a direct reference to R.W. "Chamber's The King In Yellow" and the father being in the stars seems like a reference to Yog-Sothoth, especially having a ritual to banish him being a lot like how son of Yog-Sothoth, Yog Whately, aka the Dunwitch Horror is banished in the book of the same name. Not to mention how the book draws Twilight in being very much like the dreaded king in yellow play, or one reading an accursed book referenced in Lovecraft's texts, and Celestia's speech at the end implies that what actually happend was likely more horrific than what was written by a child. So many things I've picked up on in the 6 or 7 years it's been since I first saw this will certainly be reading the original fix.
TH-cam really seems to want me to rewatch this. It has been the top suggested video for me on 5 unrelated videos in a row. I sort of miss these old abridged series, so I might as well go through all of RDP, MAS, and FIW again.
I can't belive it's been 3 years since the release. This episode and this series as a whole should have more likes and attention that it truly deserves.
I remembered celestias quote today and it was driving me mad trying to remember where it was from, google was no help and i could only remember "a child believes a lie because [] an adult []" thankfully i had the idea to type the quote into youtube search and it gave me exactly what I needed. You know when I was 9, this story made me believe the dad was bad and so was silver crescent, the mom was good and Yellow star was also good. Now that I’m older I see now that it’s the opposite. Man. This really does show kids are impressionable.

@@thesageofspringrollsoup This story is actually very special. You can think of it as a sort of personality test if you like. Due to the way Yellow Star is written, the audience can view Yellow Star as nearly any kind of person based on assumptions they make.
Maybe she's narcissistic and manipulates her mom into bullying her sister with her. Maybe she's the kindest person ever and doesn't understand why her sister acts obnoxious at all and why her mom is cruel. Maybe she's the nicest pony ever and can't stop her mom from acting cruel. All we get to know is what happened and you can assume basically anything about who the characters actually are. To know who's good or bad, you would need more.

I'd imagine the equivalent for us would be listening to a Valley Girl talk. There's a specific tone that goes above and beyond there. That is what TharkerZod actually is. Which, probably is why everyone trusts her as a matter of course. They likely underestimate her severely due to the excess femininity in her voice.
My interpretation of Celestia's speech at the end:
While we the audience, along with Celestia, see something deeper into the story, namely how one pony is so caught up with how perfect she is that she (probably) hurt her sister and encouraged their mother and the town to hate Silver Cresent, the story the author wanted to tell, and the one Twilight reads, is free from that subtext. Twilight, despite how mature she thinks she is, still retains her innocence and doesn't see how terrible Yellow Star can be seen, nor that this possibly is the story of the childhood of Celestia and Luna.
That is why she sees Yellow Star as cute and innocent, rather than a tyrant in the making. A fact that Celestia (an adult) admires in her.

That isn't admiration. Celestia is strongly implying to Twilight that there is subtext that she missed, that very subtext that Yellow Star was becoming a tyrant.
"A shame you didn't finish reading."SO much is unsaid in that one line, and the glare, and Twilight picks up on THAT subtext right away, you can see it in her eyes. Celestia is here saying "you stole my book, I know you stole my book, and you even read some of it." Twilight responds by feigning stupidity, and Celestia accepts this, knowing it was brought on by exactly the terror she was aiming for.

Not just that...throughout the video it is implied that Twilight is similar to Yellow star in terms of being gifted with power. Her friends comment on how they feel sidelined and useless compared to her, she belittles and disregards Spike & RD, and at the end her friends let her burn down Applejack's barn for fear of incurring her wrath.
Huh.. I never noticed that before. I honestly got a lot of Celestia and Luna vibes from Yellow Star and Silver Crescent. Well, on the surface, at least.

It took me almost THREE years to realize that Yellow Star's mom could possibly be the pony version of Lauren Faust. Which would make sense since the whole story of Yellow Star is supposed to symbolize the dynamic between Celestia and Luna, and since they don't have parents confirmed in the series yet, Dawn just used their actual creator.

Overall this is the most straight adaptation of the fanfic presented so far but there are interesting differences (other than the ones made to make the episode funnier)
1) There was no implications of Silver Crescent being abused in the original fic, and she was labelled as Star's "friend" rather than explicitly her sister.
2) Their father didn't show up until after their mother had died, and there was no big gap before that event. The drama was about the supposedly perfect Yellow Star facing an obstacle she couldn't overcome while here it seems that their father was directly responsible for her death.
3) The illustrations were shown to improve dramatically as time went on, going from basically stick figure to really detailed watercolor.
4) Yellow Star had one goal (get Twilight to turn back the pages and return her to her simple life) and Twilight had another (finish the book to make Yellow Star a real pony, which would have real consequences but Yellow Star herself wasn't actively malicious). Here it seems like it was some kind of summoning ritual. Honestly I like that idea because the title of the fic referenced proto-Lovecraft but the horror didn't feel that Lovecraftian.
5) Princess Celestia explicitly said that she wrote the book in the fan fic.
Change 3 was likely done to simplify the animation but the others have interesting implications. Adding Lovecraftian themes to MAS is nothing new but now it's directly connected to Celestia herself. That plus the added abuse seems to explain how Celestia became the abusive tyrant she is today, as well as why the cosmic sisters are so powerful
You didn't label the biggest difference AND the biggest improvement over the original story. There wasn't a librarian to take away all mystery.
Oh yeah. Saddle Stiches was dropped entirely along with his entire annoying subplot.

This is very likely a coincidence, but in Powerpuff Girls' "Too Poofed to Puff" episode, the Powerpuff Girls, not wanting to do the crime-fighting work of the adults, told the citizens to electrocute a monster, and the girls gave them a toaster-in-the-bathtub analogy so they'll understand how to do that. The CMC is often compared to PPG.

This is my interpretation of the backstory of Celestia presented in Star In Yellow, what it says about who she is.
What is the one unifying theme behind everything we've seen of Celestia throughout the MAS/RDP series? What is it that she did throughout her childhood?
She plays games with ponies in which she makes the rules.
In her twisted sickness that she raised her eldest daughter to have, Yellow Star's mother let her do this, always giving her everything she wanted. She was always right, always the best pony. The subjects had to play by Yellow Star's rules. Her mother bred her a psychopath. Meanwhile, her mother always said Silver Crescent was a bad pony and in her twistedness "did punishments to [Silver Crescent] in which [Silver Crescent] couldn't see."
Now look at that page that's crossed out, the events "that probably didn't happen" according to the apparition (12:51).
"Father made fun new games. Yellow Star changed the rules. Father made rules for Yellow Star (!!). Ponies Did Not Become Ponies."
Celestia was raised a de-facto omnipotent psychopath. All she ever did was play games with ponies in which she made the rules. Equestria was her playhouse and ponies her dolls. When, for the first time, ponies were no longer dolls, she did not have the vocabulary to express it. When your word for "pony" and "doll" are the same, you cannot even express "Ponies did no longer become dolls."
To this day, all of Celestia's games with Twilight, the game of her Machiavellian-Orwellian nightmare state, the games she plays with the "comedians" in the dungeons beneath Canterlot that her mother built, are, as in youth, games in which she makes the rules.

uh no clearly this is a story about how celestia and luna were born in this story within a story, it claims they were literal star creatures made into ponies...which probably has something to do with the sky pony being their father...but not actually being a pony. Discord maybe took some stars and made them into ponies for the mother? Not sure. Then being discord he sent dreams to luna and told her she was good to get her to fight with her sister celestia and then controlled them both making them grow wings in exchange for something else...maybe the mother was killed by discord or whatever this thing was in the story. This would explain why they do not like anything about him but they don't destroy him...because he saved them from being abused by their mother.

wow... its been a bit more than 2 years since the last rainbow dash presents came out.
Ya know, instead of focusing on the metatextual implications of the storybook, I find myself being more intrigued by what this episode says about the characters. RD may be a blissfully-ignorant idiot in this series, but she really is the best out of this entire cast, whereas Twilight may actually be the worst out of all of them. Spike is a browbeaten cynic, Rarity is a narcissistic sociopath, Applejack is a depressed alcoholic, Fluttershy is a passive-aggressive inferiority complex, Pinkie Pie maybe a perverted psychopath with delusions of grandeur, and Celestia may be a remorseless tyrant, but Twilight is the one that I find particularly contemptible, because even in the context of this twisted interpretation, she's smart enough to *know better* than this. She has all this knowledge, all this expertise, but since because she refuses to climb out of her own head, refuses to ever place herself in anyone else's shoes and see things from another person's perspective, she instead just sits around, uselessly griping and condescending to everyone she meets. She SHOULD be the most perceptive out of all of them, but this is the second or third time she's been easily manipulated into potentially life-destroying situations, and she's learned nothing from any of those experiences, because she's incapable of seeing the forest for the trees when she won't look past her own damn nose.

I loved this. it felt more serious than most rbd episodes, them peing parodies. I've never read the origional but this felt like it fit within the dawnsomewhere headcannon. It's obvious that the story is of cilestia and Luna, but another thing is cilestis seemed to reasonable in this. I actually like it. it felt more like a "hour long special".
a young child sees things differently than an adult, they go back and 're-look at their lives and realize the truth. cilestia is haunted to this Fay about her sisters abuse and her forcing people to be nice to her.

So... has Celestia finished the book? What did she see? What _was_ Yellow Star? This episode was quite terrifying, I love it.
In the original fanfic, the book was actually the diary she wrote when she was a filly. I can’t exactly remember the full details of the fic, but naturally the details in her diary were very far fetched and biased as she wrote it when she was a filly. This book had some dark magic in it, however despite knowing the potential danger it could bring, she still kept it anyway as a remnant of her childhood. Also nice starfox pfp ^^
@ciara4377 Yeah, I found the fanfic shortly after, and I love it quite a bit. It's pretty twrrifying overall, and I found it at a very difficult time in my life where I was dealing with emotions and trauma very similar to that young Celestia, and it hit even harder. Good fic.

This is the only time where Celestia seems more open and vulnerable to Twilight. Celestia sounds regretful of the filly she was, and seemed to hate her past self. Twilight couldn't see what kind of monster Celestia was as a filly, which Celestia herself warns about. To Celestia, Twilight is still immature, so she tells her straight up that not everything is at it seems and that there's a lot of subtext Twilight missed. It's essentially Celestia giving Twilight advice about seeing past the facade of innocence and bias.
Even after several years and the actual end of My Little Pony. I still wish, hope, and wait for part 11 of RDP 😥

Idk if the creator will ever read this, but I would like them to know that this series meant at lot to me as a young artist. How effective the storytelling was in spite of the limited art style really helped me as a beginner to shed my perfectionism and my fears that my drawings couldn't ever be good enough.

Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, there lived a young mare named Twilight Sparkles. She sure loved her books, all kinds of them. Some say she's a little obsessed; you almost never see her a day without engulfing herself in one.
Whenever she has a bit of free time, she'd take a random book to have a nice quick read. Other times when she is in the mood, she'd lie down on her bed and surround herself with long, large books. Most of the time, she reads in the privacy of her tree house, where a lot of books are stored. Sometimes though, she'd be a bit daring and read in the public.
One time, one of Twilight's friends, Rainbow Dash, was injured and put in a hospital. She was beyond bored there. Twilight personally was a soft and romantic reader. In contrast, she knew Dash was a fast and loud mare, so she have her a hardcore action book to entertain her.
At first, Dash was shy and reluctant. She'd only do it when nobody was in the room. Over time though, she softened up and was open about her reading habits. She then moved on to other types of books, from funny and comedic ones to smart, informative history books.
Except Twilight thought that Dash's reading skills were horrendous and she doesn't deserve such quality books to be given to her. Now when ever Rainbow Dash goes to Twilight's library to borrow books, she'd only give the lame, short ones. (They look more like pamphlets). Dash became absolutely offended on this attack on her dignity.
Rumors spread the entire town. Now, whenever Dash leaves her home, she'd be ridiculed at her impossibly terrible abilities at reading, and no more books is given to her. She soon became a bookless mare and spent the rest of her days shut in her house, eating tubs of ice cream and watching Korean drama.

I felt a bit left by this ending, like I book I never finished reading and made into a sculpture. I will never know what happened in the end, but when I look at the book on the self, it always leaves me wondering what could have happened.
It turns out that it's Celestia's book, written about her life. It starts happy and cheerful about basic stories featuring Yellow Star (Celestia). "We must save this puppy! We have to save the town! We need to stop this fight!" etc. But slowly, it becomes much darker and Yellow Star's life starts falling apart. First it starts with Yellow Star's mother "going to sleep" and never waking up. So they have to go on an adventure to save her. But it doesn't work. So they have to go on another one. But it doesn't work. This goes like four times until Yellow Star just gives up, weeps, probably. Then her father blames her for his wife dying, ultimately leaving forever. Along the way, she gains more powers, like becoming a pegasus, and then an alicorn. Silver Crescent is her best friend, and one day, Silver turns on her. Saying Silver should be the popular one, she should be the one that's loved, and pretty, and special. She says she'll get Yellow Star back one day and Silver runs away. One day she does come back, as an alicorn too, but I think the story ends quite quickly after this, because the book starts burning. It's much more dramatic in the actual story, Yellow Star urges Twilight to read on, complete the book before it's swallowed by flames. So Twilight tries to, but can't because she passes out from smoke inhalation. She wakes up in Celestia's castle where it's revealed that Yellow Star dragged Twilight out of the barn before Yellow Star was suddenly engulfed with flames (Because the book was burned). At Celestia's castle, it's revealed that Celestia wrote it about her life, her mother, her father, and her sister.
Not much sure what's the rest about it though. I read this a long time ago, basically the day it was revealed in an article they were making it, which was about a year ago. I don't remember all the fine details, but it was really good. I wish they had kept some more of the drama in it, but that's OK. I'm just glad they brought it back for one final adventure. The art was nice, and so was the writing. So I can look past a little nitpick. I suggest reading the actual story if you want a more indepth tale. The part were they talked about the mother "Falling asleep" was depressing, because, y'know, it was seen in the eyes of a child who, before, solved nearly every problem they faced and made everyone happy. But this is one problem they can't fix.
Anyway, I hope that helped, and tell me if I forgot anything!

Yellowstar opens a portal and throws Silver Crescent to the moon/Hell/R'lyeh/take your pick of shitty place, and maybe feels guilty afterwords. The original story is more vague on this but is somewhat predictable because it is based on celestia's life, but it could really have gone either way, with yellowstar or Silver Crescent winning.
It's implied that something very bad would happened though if the book was finished, it's based on the horror story King in Yellow.
I dont know if you are joking but if not, the RDP is based on the Fic Star in Yellow and Yellow Star would become real when Twilight would get to the End of the book.

The backgrounds in this show look amazing. I know it's kind of a weird thing to notice but in my opinion I think it lookes much cooler than the actual show
The use of lighting is stellar. Dawn Somewhere really know how to utilize the light of a room and the mysterious darkness of shadows to tell a story. The original MLP does not have that. Its nights can be pretty, but are just as vibrant as its days.

Yup. I'd recommend reading all of the original story and the final author's note.
I sorta knew it was celestia in that book as soon it explains the two sisters and the mother.

Then she grew up to live as a tyrant over the ponies in her kingdom, periodically taking particularly cruel interest in some of the smarter of them, granting them title of "student."

I thought Azathoth was Celestia's father in this universe so wouldn't the monster that was pretending to be her father in the book end up being Azathoth. So Luna became nightmare moon under Azathoth's influance, how Celestia became how she is today is still unknown. At least that is to my understanding of what happened.
She became the way she was because of her family. The mother was made out a abusive cruel woman that punished her sister and the main character, did not see what was wrong and lived where she had complete control. So she learned evil and didn't see how it was wrong.

I seriously think that this could be your guys' masterpiece if it was a bit longer. I seriously think it could be that good. The mixture of your sense of humor and the original story was great. frankly this fell apart for me at the end and I didn't "get it" until I read the story. I doubt you'd make a redux or something bc I understand how hard this was to make, but that'd be really cool.

And they're both supposed to be the most mature or smartest characters of their respective groups, so it adds insult to injury when they get tricked like that.

I keep coming back to this. It's just so amazing seeing the amount of improvement in quality since the first RDP. The writing and animation are amazing. And the humor is the kind that sticks with you and chuckle at when you spontaneously recall it during a random hour of the day.
I haven't been apart of the Brony fandom since 2014; but every so often, I come back to Dawn Somewhere and specifically this video because of how well it's put together.

Anything that hasn't gone out already will be fixed, and for those who got a DVD with issues we're thinking of sending you guys a link to download the fixed DVD iso, a corrected mp4 of the episode, and an asset folder with the music and art we used to make the episode. We'll need to re-render everything, put together a list of e-mails, and get the files uploaded, but once we've got it all we'll let everybody know!

As a teen, when I first watched this, i never really understood Celestia's speech at the end. Now as an adult, I think I understand it a lot better. Twilight was fooled by the book, as like a child, she knew no better and took Yellow Star at face value believing she was pure and innocent. She ignored or didn't see the subtext that didn't coincide with experience that would expose the lie. The lie being that Yellow Star was innocent and Silver Crescent was evil. Most adults would see right through the lie, a child would not. Twilight, despite all her knowledge and being "superior" than her friends (in the MAS universe) still has critical thinking skills akin to that of a child. And that is the perfect kind of underling, one that will not question nor contradict Celestia's intentions. That's why she is Celestia's student and why Celestia likes her.
I remember watching this while I was younger and wondering why twilight was doing those things without knowing but now I watch it again and see all the cultish themes to stars journal pretty wild

Hey I Greg. I'm crossing my fingers in hopes of you seeing this. I've been watching your videos since I was a kid. I was about 12 and remember being in the passenger seat with my mum on long road trips with her. I remember your videos keeping me from boredom and I loved them so damn much and it's weird because the humor found in these animations are far from what a 12 year old would typically like. But I watched them back to back every day. (Even downloaded them on my iphone) back when there was apps that could let you do that. I just want to thank you. I'm 17 now, and I still watch these and quote pretty much every line from every video. These are literally my childhood. 💛

Is it me or are there some serious lovecraftian themes to this? The surface level demonic ritual stuff is pretty standard, but the title seems like a direct reference to R.W. "Chamber's The King In Yellow" and the father being in the stars seems like a reference to Yog-Sothoth, especially having a ritual to banish him being a lot like how son of Yog-Sothoth, Yog Whately, aka the Dunwitch Horror is banished in the book of the same name. Not to mention how the book draws Twilight in being very much like the dreaded king in yellow play, or one reading an accursed book referenced in Lovecraft's texts, and Celestia's speech at the end implies that what actually happend was likely more horrific than what was written by a child. So many things I've picked up on in the 6 or 7 years it's been since I first saw this will certainly be reading the original fix.
TH-cam really seems to want me to rewatch this. It has been the top suggested video for me on 5 unrelated videos in a row. I sort of miss these old abridged series, so I might as well go through all of RDP, MAS, and FIW again.
I can't belive it's been 3 years since the release. This episode and this series as a whole should have more likes and attention that it truly deserves.
