    People constantly bagging out the r170 roof and it's just not the case, Mercedes was the first car to provide a folding hardtop roof to consumers making it a desirable car. So long as you kept the drainage points for the roof clear it hardly ever went wrong. Some are now 20yrs old and have had those drainage points kept clear and have never had to replace any of the components for the roof replaced. Not only that so long as you do preventative maitanance such as your oil change, filter, transmission fluid and coolant the car really won't let you down. Now the cars value has started to go up in Germany as it's now a young timers classic. The r170 truly was a success for Mercedes-Benz.

    I just bought a 1999 SLK230, German built, with ony 72,000 miles on it for $3600 on Facebook. Everything works. I am replacing the trunk lift supports ($28 a pair), the headliner ($75 at a local upholstery shop), the antenna ($40 eBay), and adding the 6-Disc changer ($100 eBay) which is plug and play with factory installed fiber optics and power in the side quarter panel. I drove it over the hill from Beverly Hills to Thousand Oaks and it really really loved it, actually runs cooler at 80mph. I love this car. This one he reviewed could use some work, but the motor sounds good. He is too critical. They are very good values as used convertibles.

      Andrew Galli hey, I have the same car and since there is a hydraulic failure on the roof and now my headliner is drenched in oil, where you do get your headliner fixed? I would like to know, thank you

    Wow you're a bit harsh/hateful on the interior and sizing of it.
    The interior is soft spoken and solid looking at the same time. As far as road trips? It's a SMALL CAR. You need a 500SL for long road trips. The car is just to have a lil something nice for a roadster in town. You wouldn't expect to be super comfortable in a Miata during a cross country road trip would ya? Well you'd surely be more comfy in an SLK.
    Roadsters by nature aren't supposed to be as big as SUV inside.
    As a 2nd time Mercedes-Benz owner, I think this car is perfect for it's size and intended use.
    That vario roof was ahead of it's time. People would gather to see a hard top become topless. To get the top down without a functioning hydraulic pump in it is far more easy than any other Mercedes-Benz with hydraulic tops.
    Lovely little car. I'm thinking of getting rid of my CLK500 (which is a fine car) in favor of an R170.
    They have the same wheel base as the 300sl. They have the humps on the hood like the 300sl had. Which was the very first supercar ever made.
    The R170 were designed by the famous Italian designer Bruno Sacco who designed the very foundation of nearly every Mercedes for the next 2 decades. It may even be the last model he designed. He also designed the 190E. Which had less chrome and flash than anything made until it was. It had those classic elegant Mercedes lines we all loved through the 80s and 90s. Yes the lines from a w202, R129, W124 which included the ever illustrious 500E and every other gorgeous Mercedes Benz made through that era.
    Crossfire copied Mercedes-Benz. Everyone does.

    the reviewer retracted the safety cover in the trunk just before trying to retract the top. It won't retract the top if the safety cover is not extended full in the trunk.

      @rscosworthfan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      he did put the cover back the roof pump has probably packed in.not too difficult to replace or could be just the relay they are 2 common failures which aint too difficult to replace ...one of the most expensive parts to replace is the kompressor(supercharger) a new one is around £1000.00 but you can buy a used one for approx £200.00 thats in the UK dunno what cost would be in US

    You'll like the W204 C Class especially the 2012 and up models. Excellent interior quality and they have that nice heavy feel to them that you got in MBZ cars from the 90s and before.

    This poor car is beat(must have been parked in the sun it's whole life). Buy one that has been taken care of and you will not be disappointed. We have a 1999 and it is a nice car, bad engine paint & interior paint but everything else is fine. If you get a black interior there is no paint to deal with. I removed the gray interior paint in our car with rubbing alcohol and just left it black. Some people repaint.

    Yeah, the convertible top may have worked if this guy knew how to operate it. He never unlocked the roof using the lock up by the rear view mirror. How can it retract if it is not unlocked??

    This specific year has nothing to do with Chrysler the crossfire came out in 2005 or 2006 i believe this car came out in 98. The interiors are completely different the exterior shares no parts etc. You may be thinking of the 2006 SLK which likely did share parts with the crossfire

    How tall are you? And how much leeway do you have for your legs? I'm 6'0'' and wondered if I would fit in it.

    • @Intechdude300
      @Intechdude300  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      6,1. Not much wiggle room for your legs really IMO. You should still check it out. Some people of the same height will have longer torsos or legs than others & vice versa. For me, I can't imagine myself using it as my main car but as a weekend ride. If it's stick shift, it might be a problem because your leg might rub agains the dashboard when working the clutch pedal. I had that issue in a Chrysler Crossfire which is pretty much identical inside.
