Sigue Sigue Sputnik - The Early Rehearsals

  • Once we had a band, we started rehearsing in a windowless room of Magenta's mew's house in Maida Vale, playing mutated covers of old Elvis and Eddie Cochran songs. This is the earliest known video of that early band. Naive and not used to being filmed, you can feel the close relationships and the sense of excitement at what the future could hold... This is one of the most exciting times in the life of any band, when you believe you have something truly unique and extraordinary and you can't wait to unleash it on an unsuspecting world.
    Filmed in that very room, along with the ghost of the former tenant Sid Vicious, and also in the Pink Palace rehearsal rooms that the band built themselves - where they painted the name "Elvis" in one meter high letters on the carpet so they could rehearse walking in his name. Magic.

    At a certain point I thought "Bananarama?? Oh, no, it's just Tony James with a funny hat"... I loved SSS as a teenager, and I still love them now that I'm 50+. But I love the ORIGINAL SSS, the ones of Flaunt It. What came later... Well, they had to do it, but did they have to?

      BACK in the day we just happened to jump in a car with some younger lads than us and they were blasting Flaunt it. Nobody but me liked then I thought. We went for a wild fast spin and it sounded great. But now in my 50's I don't fancy driving down country lanes in my own car doing 60 mph :-))))

      Magenta doesn't own anything anymore she's dead.. but what gets me is how's big are those mews for 4 people to live there and work there on the music while it was Magenta living there too. No wonder she was in smacked. Talk about Cabin fever 😎 or and that before they were ready to unleash their enterprise on the world. 4 years to get a band ready and then a few more years till it came to the end for them. They must have started this band in 1978?

    "Eddie Cochran"..???..Gene Vincent you mean ! Brilliant scam though. Sounds somewhat predictable , always thought the music came first , than you can work on image . All their songs are mediocre versions of Johnny Teardrop. Still....good times they were.

      @@PAULLONDEN I know or I think they covered a Suicide song on their their Greatest Hits cd or complication cd I have. They covered a Suicide track as it was no big secret that they were original in that sense. But they married the two electronic styles of Suicide with Rock-'n'-Roll of Johnny Thunders brilliantly. Neil X was superb and Tony James did what even Sid Vicious could have mastered on bass on a 303 had he lived long enough. I was a bit taken aback by their love of Elvis. I thought they were joking. The Stooges and The New York Dolls yeah too right but fkn Elvis. No wonder Brian James and Rat Scabies split from the London SS to form the Damned. Listening to the Sputniks the other day reminded me of Zappa with sudden out of the blue changes and just like the Mother's of Invention's debut album 'Freak Out' which featured Zappa's influences. The Sputniks did the same same quoting everyone from the Stooges to the Dolls to A Clockwork Orange. But it cracks me up when the Sputniks try and recreate that scene from Kubrics A Clockwork Orange. . They're walking through that subway like they've all got chronic rickets 😂😂😂

      @@twistedspanner Elvis was great untill "Our Fine Military" got a hold on him. I remember around 1960 (I was 9) being totally impressed. The U.S. army made a zombie out of him..

    • @twistedspanner
      @twistedspanner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PAULLONDEN aaayean I take back that comment. I forgot I loved Elvis as a youngster. (Probably still in denial since punk came along-) My dad had s couple of old singles and he had Elvis' first album which I loved. It's not got the cover the Clash copied for London Calling it's a full frontal picture of Elvis waring a red shirt and blue sky behind him. I remember playing it to death. That album was to the youth of 1957 what Never mind the Bollocks was in 1977. But when you listen to the music on it. It's really great pure playing. Train coming round the bend. I've still got it it. I knew it was an important album. There were some Eddie Cochran . Stuff around too. So when punk came along. And Sid Vicious does two Eddie Cochran single with the Sex Pistols one after the other I already knew and loved them. Something Else was the highest selling single by the Pistols. It's sold over a quarter of a million copies. Outselling 'God Save the Queen' and the Flying Lizards did 'Somertime Blues' Right I better reacquaint myself with the Sputniks 😎👍
