Exactly! I have fond memories of SSS in 1986 when I was in high school and we all listened to Flaunt It. It was very sexual and rebellious, perfect for kids in their mid teens as I was. I still have the CD and sometimes reminisce.
Loved then then - love them now! IMHO, the world is just starting to catch up to them. And for the record, I still use Studio Line today because of Sigue Sigue Sputnik!
This band brought more colour, innovation and most importantly FUN than boring people could handle. Brightened up my life immensely in the boring twat filled 80s and I love them for that.
I mean, is it "good"? No; lordy no. But it's still awesome. All I knows is that I break out in a stupid grin whenever I hear their music or hear the words Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
This group was INSANE. But my f$&king GOD, they were brilliant. Movie samples, stuttering, their persona, their haircuts, and love of Japan. As insane as the 80’s were, they were beyond insane. Like Ebn Ozn, Haysi Fantayzee, and Oingo Boingo on electronic Japanese sexy medicine turbo chunk technology money making madness heroin! Along with samples of insanity from TV shows and movies.
Huh, I had no idea the 'ads' in Flaunt it were paid advertisers. Personally, I think they are amazing on that record. I love the LoReal spot, "fixing gel strong hold behold...the way you like it...". LOVE that album!!!
SSS were all hype and they were riding it very well. Everything else around them was a set of circumstances - some of which worked on their behalf and some of which buried them down deep in the end. And no, Magenta, they were definitely NOT the first ones to use sampling. Sorry, do your PR homework.
@@curly_wyn Don't forget Big Audio Dynamite hence the Tony James connection with Mick Jones they go way back and collaborated in the Band Carbon Silicon. Big Audio Dynamite first Album is Full of Sampling
They weren’t really very original, they just took things more underground bands like Cabaret Voltaire, front242 and Throbbing Gristle had already been doing and put it into a pop format for a mainstream audience (front242 had been using delay/reverb on live vocals years before and Deleche Mode’s 3rd album from 1983 used sampled sound on nearly every song and that was pop) alongside the sampling in early hip hop and electro records like The Message, Grand Master Flash and African Bambata . Outside of the music they were pretty ahead of the time regards ‘hype’ but pretty quickly found if you don’t back it with substance it can turn on you pretty fast. Not saying that’s a bad thing, quite an interesting thing to do for the time and beats the market derivative pop music in the charts these days. It was much better than the most of the god awful mainstream chart music of the time) likes of Phil Collins … But geez, those adverts between songs really were annoying as fk - and was only ‘edgy’ for one or two listens before it made the record unlistenable. Tony James was very astute and way ahead of the time in terms of understanding branding, image, advertising, PR and networking and scmoozing the right media heads and selling a unified vision and zeitgeist- much like brands do now where they sell an idea or identity more than an actual product or thing. He combined that with the well worn Malcolm McLaren playbook and all the tricks and tactics of how to sell a band to a record company for a lot of money. The KLF did it but they did it without a record company and did it all themselves with the Time Lords
Literally the worst 'band' ever! They weren't hated , or underestimated, or before their time, or misunderstood. They were just talentless and utter shit. And boring. Ok for a fleeting few weeks they conned the music business for a few quid. But that was just exploiting idiots who took a punt on what they thought was the next big thing- but actually turned out to be a momentary puff of marketing without substance (you just had to listen to 15 seconds of any one of their 'songs' to get that!). Just when you think that anyone can control the media, and tell you what you like, SSS stand as living proof of a universal truth that is you cannot polish a turd!!
I love how the whole story of the band can be summed up in six and a half minutes. They got together, made two albums, and lived the rest of their lives perfoming three songs in various forms. Don't get me wrong, I loved SSS for what they were...a wild music experiment from Tony James.
Pop music has always needed excitement. Sigue Sigue Sputnik were one of the few bands to give a glimpse of what could have been. Pop music could now be on a different path if radio 1 had not existed!
For some reason they now remind me of early Roxy Music. Sigue Sigue music has aged well because it has not aged. Plus if David Bowie covers one of your songs you must be doing ok.
The music of Sigue Sigue Sputnik in the late 80's and early 90's (when I was in my twenties) really cheered me up and for that I will be forever grateful.
Thanks for that 2000jago ;-) Yes SSS were damned by everyone right from the start saying that they were a gimmick and wouldnt last 5 minutes, but they are still around and still performing, truly original
I loved them when they first appeared. I bought the Sex Bomb Boogie 'VHS single' and didnt realise at the time that, as a naive teenager, what I perceived as a golden bullet on the cover was something else entirely 😂
The problem I have with "Talking Heads" shows like this clip, is that the Talking Heads themselves either weren't there/didn't understand/are reading from the script the producers have provided them with/are trying to make THEMSELVES out to be somehow better than who or what they're talking about/are using someone elses fame as an opportunity to trot out their pre-written "hilarious spur of the moment" comments. I mean exactly who is David Quantick and does his version of events tally up with history? And if he hated Sputnik that much......why did he listen to the album 40 times ;-) They were ahead of their time, they DID play (I know, I saw them twice) and their sound is still amazing to this day. Hips lips guns guitars high heels high hair 2 drummers a guitarist a singer & a space bass, I wish 1986 would come back.
Agreed. I detest the hosts that haven't a clue who they are interviewing and likely haven't bothered to meet them before the live broadcast/recording of the show. How's the female host just staring at 1:46? Just...blank. I love these guys. Hot girls, mega high heels, lots of hair, shreds of clothing (like Mötley Crüe) and ATTITUDE!! Loved the 80s, man! 🤩
@@normturner4849 I'd forgotten I'd commented on this, 10 years ago!! My opinion has changed slightly since then though, on rewatching this video I'm even more annoyed at David Quantick's smug attitude and insulting comments 😂.
These guys were hilarious. I used to play a table top Cyberpunk role playing game and always put Flaunt It on in the background, as I assumed that was the radio top 40 in the future.
Magenta de Vine showing her complete ignorance of music history, one of the first bands to sample tv and films, really? Cabaret Voltaire were doing that in 1974. SSS, no style, no substance, comedy gonk musical frauds, utter garbage and everyone saw through the bullshit like it was cling film, hence their very short and unsuccessful career. Beautifully torn apart by Muriel Gray on the Tube.
Hey, you can't take her seriously, this is [was] her role. Promoters will always lie like that, engaging willful ignorance to the benefit of their client. You can always apologize, but the goal of being talked about is accomplished.
Gawd. One of the most baffling bands to ever exist. Somebody stop Tony James! That’s right lol, Billy Idol’s former bandmate is responsible all of this.
The point was made perfectly. Tony James worked it all out to the Nth degree but somehow forgot to pay attention to the music. The anticipation for this band was meteoric and then the single came out...... ...... and their career crashed.
It's self repeating charm- "KISS" borrowed from Japanese Kabuki theatre, and "X Japa"n borrowed from "KISS". There were English bands like Japan, SSS or Billy Idol who inspired kids in Japan. Fun fact: Japan in 80-90's had same cultural revolution as USA or UK did in the 60-70's
Flaunt It! is one of the greatest records ever. Never gets old.
Agreed. So good.

I found "Flaunt It" in my local record shop a few months ago! I play it constantly.
3 years later this is still true!
It’s extremely dated. It got old instantly.
Loved then then - love them now! IMHO, the world is just starting to catch up to them. And for the record, I still use Studio Line today because of Sigue Sigue Sputnik!
I think it's "Fixing gel, strong hold! Be bold!" Either way, freaking brilliant.
"Studio Line, create your look."
This band brought more colour, innovation and most importantly FUN than boring people could handle. Brightened up my life immensely in the boring twat filled 80s and I love them for that.
Lmao shut up, they didn’t innovate shit, they just sucked.
they were like a live action 80's anime
Stylistically they also remind me of Visual Kei.
SSS!!! One of my fave.s for well over 20 years! Thanks for posting this! Very COOL! :)
Like em or not they were revolutionary in a lot of what they did. Well deserved place in history.
They weren’t revolutionary at all. To put it bluntly, Sigue Sigue Sputnik were truly shit!
Sure they hyped. But they delivered!
Love the 1st 2 albums, along with Ultra Real.
SSS was AWESOME!!!! Sort of like Bowie meets ‘Blade Runner’ meets ‘The Road Warrior’ meets Punk meets ‘Wall Street’ meets Sony meets SEGA!!!! 🤘🤘🤘
I'm still trying to decide whether this was utter genius, or utter dogshit. Thirty years later, I'm none the wiser.....
It's deffo dogshit!..

GLAM ROCK Precursor 1 of a kind in many respects
SSS taught me that if your band isn't about BMX bikes then who gives a f**k what your band is about.
At least twenty years ahead of their time. They bridged the words of punk and X-Factor. Like most great acts, reviled at the time, revered now.
Revered by whom? I have never heard anyone, not even my music-loving friends, ever mention them.
@@curly_wyn they hit on enough ideas/themes that would show up in music years later - but in the end the music was not that good enough
Sigue Sigue sputnik is about rockets, sex, television, home computers, BMX bikes...
Saw SSS Electronic at a small gig in Birmingham around 12 years ago and enjoyed getting hammered with Martin, Johann and co at the after party 😂
Luv this band
