thank you Gavin! another important insight ... you MUST do this project yourself because its very doable (as Gavin shows us) but also for the very simple reason that professional installers - i promise you, despite being professionals - they WILL scratch your dash and you'll HATE it. any type of work like this where scratches or damage will be very visible on the dash, you CAN'T leave it to anyone else. no one cares like you do! that's what i learned the hard way. tackle it, it will be perfect and good luck! Not on the face no. There are two separate USB 'dongles' that come out of the back of the unit and I routed to come out of the side of the glove compartment. I then just used a normal Apple charger cord to plug my phone into one of the dongles and I leave it plugged in on the centre console table. You can see them on the left of the unit, next to the heater control in the later parts of the video. It works just fine.
Hi Gavin, Thanks for the Video. It really helps. I am in the process of installing android head unit to my CR-V MKII 2004 My factory fitted unit is a sat nav unit and it has two plugs. Blue and Black. Head unit can be connected to the blue but it doesn’t power up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Could you please tell me or add links for the 2 kits you had in this video ( Android head unit and the plastic surround and wire kit) many thank Ian.
Am I missing something here? You never mention the brand or model numbers of the head unit or the wiring. Could you please include this in the link. Thanks so much.

NP, Its doing fine. I drove down to the South of Spain using it and its fine. When I got to about Madrid I realised you could switch the screen off which helped a lot!
It's a while since I did this so can't exactly remember! Basically its a 1 for 1 transfer job from the old head unit to the new head unit. By accident I left one set of plugs un connected after I had put everything back together, and noticed that my Hazard button wasn't lit. I took the head unit back out and it was obvious what I'd done. Plugged them together and everything works fine now.
I did it with my last CRV, putting a full platform through the back, about 30cm above the steel floor. This time I’ll only do one side, it makes storage easier. Without the seats it’s a huge area, just slightly too short for someone near 6ft. I’lol start in mid September. Have to get my sim to University first.
No problems at all with the visibility even during the brightest days. At night you need to get acquainted with how to turn the screen brightness down or off completely...it is too bright. The unit comes with the bezel..... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174822230106
Hi Gavin, enjoyed the vid for the head unit for the CRV - something I need to do. Now you've had this unit installed for a wee while and have been using... any apparent issues with it or shortcomings that perhaps weren't obvious as point of install?
It does what I need it to do which is basically play my play lists and podcasts via Blue Tooth. That works fine. It doesn't hold the time for some reason. It always reverts back to GMT. Because its based on an android screen there is no really simple fast way to turn the sound down....you have to press a button down on the screen which isn't as intuitive as turning a knob. At night the screen is big and bright....I need to learn how to turn the brightness down. I've played with the navigation a little and that works fine. The radio works perfectly (but I don't really listen to the radio!) It is way better than what was in there before, but its not perfect.
Mines holds the time. Go in the setting time and date, change from automatic update of date and time to manual update... works perfectly no issues had mines for couple months now
Hey Gavin! I have a different factory navigation unit than you and it's got me wondering.. Do I have the premium nav version? I have 10 connections on the back of mine, not including the s-video port. Do you know which harness I would need?
Mine came with the harness so it was just plug and play. I routed the usb cables out of the side of the glove box. You can see it in the video at the end I think.

Good question. There are two USB cables that come from the rear of the unit. I fed them out of the side of the glove compartment. There is about 60mm of cable, plus the plug, that protrudes. It looks OK. Not great, just OK.
Hello friend! How responsive is this unit? I have another smart radio in my other car and it's a little slow. I want to upgrade to this. For instance, if you open maps is it super slow?
I did 1200 miles in October from the UK to Spain through France, running the Head unit off my iphone (Iphone as a personal hotspot). I had Google maps giving me directions on my phone (with an English Accent) and on the Head unit (in an American accent). They would give verbal instructions at almost the same time, maybe the head unit 2 seconds behind. Sometimes the Head unit would loose connection with the phone, and I would need to reconnect them via the settings. That is a PITA. It picks up bluetooth music off my phone perfectly. There is a dim button on screen which switches the screen off at night. Invaluable when driving at night. Its fine. Better than the old radio, but not as good as original equipment screens. 7/10.
Would love to know where you got the custom replacement CRV specific radio housing. Been searching to see if its something that can be bought separately from the headunit. Also what brand is the headunit?

How are you getting on with this unit? Is it still working? Is it worth the money or would you recommend going a different path? I'm sick of seeing disc error on my current original sat nav.
It's OK Don, but just OK. The Bluetooth works brilliantly so I can listen to Music off my phone, podcasts etc. The navigation piggy backs off your phone, so you get whatever you have on your phone on the bigger screen with a different accent! I am seriously considering it, over a double din unit. Can I ask what doesn't work as well as you hoped and why. Can volume be adjusted easily. Do steering wheel controls also work?
@@don6570 Mine doesn't have steering wheel controls, but it came with all of the connections to hook it up. I have no reason to think it wouldn't work with it. My main gripe is actually the volume control! I really miss having a physical knob that you can turn!
