Hubs and I pulled away from cycling clubs due to speed and I personally lost confidence riding with others. We are now in our 50’s and what we prefer to do has changed. We mix it up with different rides road/gravel/mtb and try to stay on quiet country lanes. Keep up the good work

That looked pretty brutal but least you all ended your smiling which just sums up cycling to me. Great content as always.

Am the same, gym is my first love , and cycling was only used for cardio, now it’s the other way round, strong on the bike and fitter in the gym, they work well together

first tune in and enjoyed. Watch at lot of cycling YT vids but you guys put an authentic lay cyclists spin on it. Graham is a quality rider there for sure, and cycling once fit is also about enjoying it which came across too.

Regarding the close/horned pass: I hate it so much. I've been riding back and to from work recently and realised how good drivers have been but when you get a bad one...

You and your riding friends are very inspirational. I struggle similar to you and have found cycling to be such an amazing exercise. Not only cardio but a sense of adventure

What a load of bull the bloke in blue is spitting about club rides, he might be a nice chap but he reeks of elitism! we all have our problems but there's no excuse for elitism. You're activity worried that the club isn't attracting riders/new riders, then in the next sentence you're basically saying like it or lump it ,we have one speed and thats fast! You can keep the same mentality with the club "drop" rides, but just split the rides into to 3-4 cats, A B C D, each one tied to an associated level, its really as simple as that. All still fast, ranging from 19mph averages to the A group smashing 26-27mph. I don't see the problem and you'll attract more riders over night ish.
You need to except some can't ride 2-300 miles a week. So some can't do maximal efforts in the same way as the more able in the club, so you need a tier system, it's why the Cat system exists in racing! a club can't expect everyone to be at the same level, your probably looking at only a handful of people in your county that are at pro level speeds, you wont keep a club alive with those guys and girls alone. But there are many more people that can hold a 20-22mph average and even more can do a solid 18-19.
This means you'll still be able to do the drop ride thing but will allow the ride leaders of each group to actively pull and push riders into the next group to challenge some riders and give the chance for other riders in slightly slower group if they can't keep up with the faster riders. This can be actively done at a coffee stop.
This way you can have your cake and eat it, attract newer slower but above average cyclists while keeping the elite end of the club happy.
Elitism is why clubs fail you have to embrace slower riders. If Thomas can do it with his "fast crew rides" then im sure a little county club can.

      Cheers for the lengthy comment.
But I think in short what you have said is correct, but you have taken what G has said out of context. I was talking to G firstly about out club, then we moved on to his own “Personal” goals and training plan. G is probably elite to be honest and sits in the small top %. I think the way i edited the two conversations together may be wrong on my part.
      Hope that helps.

It’s so frustrating and extremely demotivating to go out with a fast group where they stop and wait for you, to then set off at high speed once you catch up! They get a rest when they don’t need one when you are dying, chewing your stem!! Guess what happens then… that rider doesn’t want to do it again next week as it just seems too much, far too hard and definitely not enjoyable.
I’ve been there.. but I’ve also improved thanks to training with a club with categorised rides of varying speeds and distances, as well as doing similar on Zwift. If you want to attract new riders in, or bring on junior riders, you need to encourage which will breed progress. That’s not how it sounded from the other guy (forgotten his name, sorry).
