“We always watch in subs” made me immediately subscribe. 😅 A lot of the character nuances and quirks, as well as humor gets lost in translation, so I really prefer subs as well. It takes getting used to for some, but ultimately, it’s a better experience I think.

I love how Giyu talks tough and looks cold as ice, but is more than willing to let Tanjiro and Nezuko prove him wrong. His stone face and ice cold demeanor seem to be just a mask he puts on for work, killing demons who devoured their families, but inside he never stopped hoping that one day a demon would show up that deserved his mercy. I wonder how many siblings and parents begged him to let their loved one that was turned into a demon live, but he always had to take their lives in the end. His inner monologue even sounded to me, like he already had shown mercy and it backfired. There is so much layered in just this first episode.

(Warning, this might be a slight spoiler) The reason Tomioka was so harsh on Tanjiro, is because he also had a bad past with demons. Most demon slayers do, so Tomioka seeing Tanjiro like that triggered him. A big thing about this series is that don't judge a character too quickly, wait till you see their reasoning and their past. Glad you're both reacting to this one, it's a great show. One of the most wholesome male protagonists in anime I've seen. And since I see people in comments already talking about watch order with the movie (Mugen Train) vs the early half of season 2, I'll say it's not a vastly different experience. But when you get there I'd go with the movie, then S02E01 (think prequel episode to the movie released later), then skip to episode S02E08, as S02E02-07 is nearly the same as the film. About the only difference, other than being cut into episode length chunks, is I think it had an opening and ending song made for it. Can't remember if it also included the bonus short "Taisho Secret" sections and title of next episode as in other seasons. On the sub vs dub thing. Thankful this is going to be the original language. Sometimes dub casts are quite good, I'll always praise the cast of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex for example, where I genuinely like both. This show, however, is a case where the original cast is the clear choice. Particularly with characters that show up later that require a certain level of skill to go to some interesting places vocally, at least one of which might sound familiar.
Tanjiro kind of alludes to this before he goes to sleep in Saburo’s house, but demons are very much in kind of an “urban legend” status to his generation until the events of this episode, but older generations have more fear for them. This takes place during the Taisho era which somewhere between 1912-1926 CE, so while Tanjiro’s rural nature comes into play, overall Japan is entering a more modern era.
Very late in response but the old guy isn’t that suspicious i promise lmao he just looks like that loool. The old guy just told him to stay in because like Tanjiro said, his grandma often talked about Demons & given that the old guy is at that age, it clear he believes in demons too. But Tan, like most ppl, just disregarded them as old folk tales.
It's a pretty remarkable series in that it takes a almost purely formulaic shounen and executes it at the highest level the anime industry has ever seen. I would suggest caution when it comes to expectations and hyping up certain arcs or scenes: a great show can still be overhyped, and hyping certain scenes effectively spoil them, both damage the viewing experience.
That’s what I love about demon slayer, a masterpiece at execution, whereas other anime may have more ambitious and unique ideas, but poorly execute them

There are people who chuck it to the side just because its apparently " generic and carried by it's animation". I prefer not to see it that way. I think the animation BY itself puts it in a league of it's own, it really is a sight to behold sometimes, but the music, voice acting and everything makes it top tier as well.

A lot of the bigger productions in more recent years will redo the mouth movement to match the dub audio. I have no idea if there is any kind of database or tag that could let you check, but the dub mouth flaps are not always bad.

Just a head's up. The movie was adapted into the second season, still called Mugen Train as it covers the Mugen Train arc in Manga chapters 54-69. So you don't need to watch both. I would recommend the show adaptation of the arc first since we get a little bit more.
After season one, I definitely recommend you watch the Mugen Train movie. That movie was a direct continuation of the Demon Slayer story and season two picks up after that movie. Ufotable did later release the Mugen Train arc of the story in episodic form but its best experienced as a movie
