There are millions of songs that the human race has composed and performed over thousands of years of music.
There are a rare few that give people a certain reaction, you get goosebumps and your hair stands on end, some even bring people to tears either because of the message the song holds or just because you realise you are listening to something extremely special.

this video was your first disturbed song? awesome! they've got a lot of other great covers and original music. i'd personally recommend at least checking out The Light and Darkness, i feel like they're both good transition songs from the ballad here and the harder metal/rock they usually prefer.

@@icefox94 oh no, this is not my first disturbed song. I am a long time fan and know all their songs. They touch my soul deeply. I don’t have any education with music, but their songs seem so complicated and simple at the same time. And their songs run deep like a river in my heart. I love it! But when I heard this song, my father was dying that summer... it touched me so deeply. A scar in my heart and their words pierced my grief, while helping me deal with the tragedy. It was a blessing and almost supernatural how it affected me. And I don’t even believe in any of that... They’re interpretation was like they saw my world - amazing

People love to write off metal as just noise, but metal artists are so incredibly talented. So many are classically trained and complete music nerds! That's one of the reasons I love the genre so much. I introduced my professional opera singer mother to heavy metal when I was a kid and she became obsessed and eventually was the one to teach me all the ways it's similar to classical and operatic music. Now my mom is Disturbed's biggest fan and I loved watching this video because your reactions reminded me so much of my mom's first impressions when hearing them for the first time. It's always such a joy to see the artistry celebrated like this!

I really appreciate that you appraise the performance rather than doing what my mother used to do when I would sing rock songs while accompanying myself on the piano: She would criticize me for not taking a "classical" approach to the music. She was raised with mostly Italian opera (though they let some of the French ones in, along with Mozart) and learned voice at the Boston Conservatory of music in the 1940s. However, there came a time when I took her to see a movie version of "Carmen," done with operatic singers, but for which the actress/singer playing Carmen went gritty when she believed the character demanded it (Placido didn't do that much in his role, but his character's a wuss anyway). And Mom was thrown into confusion at this. But after she saw that with me, she didn't give me a hard time any more about how I interpreted a song. It still struck her sometimes as "wrong," but she had a better understanding of why I sang something the way I chose to.
She's been gone a long time now, but I wish she had lived long enough to experience TH-cam and the myriad singing performances we can find. Mom herself was a good actress, so I think she could have come around to appreciating Draiman's interpretation of "Sound of Silence." She liked the Simon and Garfunkel original, because she liked Art's voice. But I think that she would have been able to appreciate the power Draiman brings to the vocals, making the song even more powerful than written.
I'm glad you're the kind of voice teacher you are. It's likely you impress the importance of understanding what you're singing and interpreting it both through the intention of the composer and your life experience. Wish I'd had the chance to work with you 40 years ago!

One can tell that this man has a genuine love of the gift of music and appreciates it's diversity...impressive. He also has the gift of being able to "teach" and use terminology in a way that's understandable to the layman...one who might not have a true grasp of the skill and technical intricacies that it takes to construct a song and/or lyrics. But, most of us who have gone through the educational system in this country will understand when I say that there are educators out there that are very much "tellers" and not "teachers." This man is certainly a "teacher." I applaud you sir...and, thank you. The educational system could very much use a lot more of this man's ilk in guiding our children through school and hopefully, also turning them into better people.

Something else that really sells this version for me is that as his voice builds, the accompaniment builds also. When he's soft and gentle, it's just the piano. As his voice grows the orchestra starts in, and finally the powerful timpani as it hits the peak. Very moving song that gives me goose bumps every time I hear it!

There have been many comments to reactions to this song suggesting that S&G’s rendition was in the tone of a warning, and David’s is that of the failure to heed that warning. Emotion and intensity ramped up. Well put. Both are great and have their place. But as wonderful as S&G were, this is a much more powerful delivery of the message.
