I have been using the Pivot case for about 6 months now and think it is a great solution when using the Ipad. I have it mounted where you mounted yours but have the 11" Pro Ipad. All works well.
I remember you were asking for a solution and I recommended the Pivot case. So happy you love it. It is such a game changer and is everything I ever wanted in the cockpit. I think they also just make really cool looking cases
I used to use the iPad a lot, but since I installed a Garmin G3X Touch panel I hardly ever look at it in flight, and it’s become a flight planning tool instead of a flight management tool. It sits wedged against the seat just in case, but everything I need when I’m actually flying is supplied by Garmin now.
I've never tried a mount like that, I've always just used a kneeboard case that straps to my leg so it doesn't fly around. I do see the appeal of having the iPad in front of you like that, rather than in your lap
I just started my ifr training and went from a full sized iPad down to a mini with a ram mount. I'll take a look at the 67 designs. Appreciate the review!
awesome video! thanks for sharing your gear with us! i definitely need this for my IFR training because I’m constantly looking down at my ipad in my lap which makes it all to easy to lose headings and altitudes. this looks like the best setup to be hands free! CHEERS 🎉
That setup looks really good for your Ipad Mini. I am personally using a nice kneeboard, it has a pocket that holds the Ipad Pro 11 inch that I use. The kneeboard has a foldover cover which can protect the Ipad from direct sunlight. The cover has a clipboard style clip on the top at the outside that I use to hold paper plans & hardcopy versions of aerodrome charts that I carry as a backup to my ipad. The fold of the cover is on the right handside of the ipad so when you open it up the apple pencil is found neatly tucked against the Ipad continuing to charge.
That 67 Design stuff looks pretty good, but I wish these companies would start making their iPad cases in white so they absorb less heat. Thanks for another good video, Stef!
Hi there, have been using the Pivot case on my Mini6 right from the beginning and I simply love it. I do have a fixed mount on my dash to keep the iPad in the shadow as much as possible to prevent overheating. Good to know: Pivot also provides square connectors, also for knee mounts etc.
Glad you've decided to go with the Pivot as it was my recommendation to you on Instagram. What about a kneeboard from pivot to use the iPad as a kneeboard when writing down an IFR clearance for example?
I've seen some good looking kneeboard options that work with Pivot cases but I honestly don't use a kneeboard so for me not so relevant. But if you used a kneeboard then yeah I'd assume a Pivot attachment to click into the window mount or knee mount would work well.
@@StefanDrury Pivot makes a kneeboard insert with their mount in it that pairs wonderfully with the case and the mini 6. I have it along with a suction mount as some of the aircraft I fly have nowhere practical for the suction mount to go. I also tend to take the iPad off the suction mount and move it to my kneeboard for taxiing, takeoff, and landing - all times where I want to minimize obstructing my view out of the plane.
Looks like an elegant solution. I use an iPad Pro mounted on to a kneeboard so it stays in place during any turbulance. That works well for writing down the ATIS and clearances, but it's far from ideal having to look down at maps/plates instead of having it at eye level. Your solution seems to strike a good balance of being able to unclip the iPad for writing and having it at eye level when flying. Might need to add an iPad Mini to the Xmas list!!
This is probably the main reason why I don't use a kneeboard now I have an iPad. I prefer keeping my eyeline horizontal, especially when referencing avionics and approach plates on an instrument approach, rather than head down and up if the plates/charts are on my lap. Each to their own of course, and I flew with a kneeboard for all of my flight training, but for me it's a preferable setup the way I have it now.
@@StefanDruryHi Stefan My question is slightly off topic. I can't seem to get the Aircraft ✈️ symbol to appear on my Map once Airborne could this be just a Settings change in Foreflight to fix??
Stef I think an Au company like Quadlock is the way to go because your devices will be swappable from aircraft, bicycle, tripod and car; all with wireless charging and vibration dampers as options. As well as an aviation list of parts they also have a photography and jogging list of bits, and everything is interchangeable. (I'm getting myself the tripod/selfie stick for Xmas) 📸 🤩✅
Regarding the suction cups mount, a fixed suction cup can generate additional stresses when the weight attached to the cup puts a twist load on a small section of the canopy, this can eventually weaken or even seriously damage the acrylic glass. What's your insight about this issue?
The timing of this video is quite extraordinary. For some weird reason, I was actually thining about your iPad usage in EYZ this morning, and was trying to remember which mount you decided on. So, either you or I have ESP 😉
I do have a GoPro mount in the ceiling specifically for this but the flicker off the G500 screens is too annoying. I could play with frame rates but haven't got around to it yet. Let me add it to the request list and see what can be done. Bottom line - I've been too busy to try it, but yes it's possible.
As always a very good and interesting video! I appreciate your content for a while now! As a rotary pilot in the beautiful alps, i tried looking into filming a bit for myself (also for training purposes). I learned fast that the battery on GoPros really go empty pretty quickly. How do you deal with that? Do you charge them in flight? Fly safe!
I 'upgraded' my decades old Jepp IFR kneeboard. I kept the metal kneeboard part with paper for notes (A5)... I've not gone electronic, I'm still old school for that. But on the other part (what becomes the cover afterwards and the 'chart holder' in flight I have one of the CASA A5 clipboards in to give it some rigidity and then simply added some velcro between it and my iPad case (hook side on the kneeboard, so the softer loop side is on the iPad when not part of the kneeboard). The cover part of the iPad case simply sits over the edge of my leg out of the way. Super cheap and simple mod and works a treat! Also means that I use velcro to secure my charts and checklists just like NASA Shuttle pilots did! 😁🧑🚀
Apple know we use them in our planes: look at the iPad mini 6 introduction video. I've heard it argued that Apple would have discontinued the iPad mini line years ago if it wasn't for us aviators (and ForeFlight). Since I always use an external GPS (Bad Elf) I opted for wi fi-only when I bought my new iPad mini. If I need data I can use my phone as a hot spot.

That's a great question but I haven't found it to in my experience. This particular suction cup has never fallen off in flight for me, others I've used in the past have.
I've never found I've needed one. I rarely have the iPad up there in full sunlight to avoid it from overheating. But even when on an approach in full glare I haven't found I've needed any additional screen protection/film to make the iPad easier to read. Could also be the design of this particular cockpit, the sun protection is good in this aircraft.

It's an interesting take, but the iPad performs quite different functions to the cockpit avionics. Pre-flight planning, flight notification forms, charts/maps (it's a legal requirement to have separate maps under certain regulators), additional weather data AND communications are just a few supplemental and/or backup functions available with an iPad. It's tools for the job, no one singular item will do everything. I don't feel it's an "indictment against" anything, rather I augment my cockpit avionics with an iPad to give me additional efficiencies and redundancy.

@@alexwhiteside why would it require two hands? The Quadlock mini case is compatible with the standard mounting head and the mag head.
