Good info! the step hill and constant shifting is the cause of the tranny thermal issue. What happen was the torque converter keep unlocking\locking when searching for gear and that resulted in overheating. Also the weight of the Story Teller is the contributing factor. Try to lock the gear to 4th gear or lower by using the paddle shift when going uphill and stop and go traffic (gear selection depends on the speed) that way the tranny will not hunt for gears and stay on the highest gear you set it too. I need to install a mechanical tranny gauge on mine that way i can monitor the temp all the time. My other diesel vehicle has a tuner that display the gear and also show when the Torque converted is locked which is a great tool. Anything similar to Sprinters?

Thank you for the explanation, the van was definitely hunting for gears and it was Yosemite, so the roads were packed with cars when this happened. I never looked into aftermarket aux gauges, but I imagine there must be some out there.
