Classic Phantasy Star was a truly special thing, and while I've no qualms with the like of PSO2 and other modern entries, the origina saga and its music is something that simply does not recieve the respect it deserves, kept alive only by marvelous individuals such as yourself. Phenominal work.

Man, this is great! I got this game when it was new, but I was a third grader and it was so hard and never finished it. Recently started playing it on my Switch and am obsessed with it. This game has haunted me for years because I only got as far as Uzo Island.
I was a few years ahead of you (8th grade) when I got PSII and it was no joke for me either. Countless hours of grinding, getting hopelessly lost and dying... lots and lots of dying. 🤣 Eventually got through it, though, and am very glad I preserved. How's your playthrough going?
@@artiegohome I beat it! And man, the amount of grinding I had to do was insane, even for an old RPG. I have Rolf at level 40 and everyone else in my main party at 39. Very satisfying to finally finish.

This remix blows my mind and brings back memories from decades ago. I can't thank you enough for doing justice to one of the defining soundtracks of my childhood.
These days games were so "mystic", PStar2 have one of the absolute coolest and catchy soundtracks, upbeat but yet smooth, and whatever they used to make this on have a good "sound" and the producer great taste and skills. Even how "simple" it can sound, phenomenal phantasy for cocky, weird beats backbeats and melodies ♥ Nice upload.
I never post comments on TH-cam but you have remixed an astonishing arrangement that actually improves the already perfect original composition. I let this play for hours on loop.
I've been looking for something chill & appropriate to set on in the background while playing some early CRPGs that lack any bgm, and this sets the perfect atmosphere for drawing grid maps and falling through holes into rude traps. Brings back all those old PS series memories. Thank you for putting this together :)
This is quite possibly one of the best remixes of any game i have had the pleasure to hear. Funny thing is i would have liked it in tracks (Not that i have any say lol) HOWEVER!!! I also can not think of hearing it any other way than this full complication. My hat off to your talent! Thank you for sharing this with everyone!!!
The problem, I think, with dividing it into tracks would be that the smooth as hell transitions would be lost and they are one one the best parts of this remix.
Luke, your remixes are incredible, best in class IMO. The title song for Turrican II, "The Final Fight", is considered one of the most iconic pieces of video game music from the 16-bit era. It was composed by Chris Huelsbeck, who also composed the music for the original Turrican game. Have you considered recreating that one? It would get some serious attention.
thanks, funny you say that. I was watching a mike matei stream and he was playing it, i thought the music was good and started looking as some of the ost from the series. I may do it. its a time thing though these days, and i still have commissions i havent event started on yet lol
That pause in the melody at 0:15 makes me laugh every time I hear it. Yes, that's how it sounds in the actual game. But it pauses there because the music playroutine slows down during the transition in on-screen visuals at that moment. If you listen to the track in, say, the music test mode, that pause is absent. Still, I love this cover compilation. My only minor gripe is that one or two of my favorite tracks had their keys changed so they'd fit better in a seamless mix.
Fantastic compilation. Not gonna lie, I was blown away by your cover of "Pressure." I just heard it in another video, and I had to stop by to hear the rest of the album. I really hope you do consider making a PSIII album.
I'm a long time Phantasy Star fan, and being around in '89 when this game originally shipped.. WOW, this remix is great; Wonderful even. Love the extra layer of percussion you added and love the synth. I know you didn't make this remix in the '80s but damn, it totally feels like it totally could be from the 80s. I love the the way you mixed the tracks together so seamlessly. I love how you stayed true to the originals as well and expanded upon the songs as they were in the 80s. You've successfully transported me back to 1989 for a good 33 minutes. Thank you!
@@lukejansen3540 I just checked your site and looks like you do a lot of SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive remixes. Have you ever considered doing one on Langrisser/Warsong?

Man I have been listening to this like no other for a very long time now, and never am ceased to be amazed. Such a remix comp for PSIII would be heaven.
I discovered Phantasy Star II whilst confusing it for PS III which my neighbor had. The games were separate apps when I first downloaded it. I've only made it as far as the hardest dam before giving up. The first 3 games are bundled now, and cloud saves were taken down last year. And I blast this while cleaning on my assigned days. You did an awesome job on this. I'll give you a pass for leaving out Bracky News.
This brings back so many memories. Absolutely love it! Have you made a remix of Phantasy Star 1? Rise or Fall is one of the best "Battle" tracks in a JRPG ever!!!
I always wondered what the original composer might have envisioned the tracks to sound like WITHOUT the limitations of the hardware. This does a good job answering that question.
Hey! Long time Phantasy Star fan here! :D Great job! It is indeed super seamless and it is very exciting to listen to. It is a real gem of the PS music remakes. You have just earned a new subscriber. This is seriously amazing and I can't fully express how it makes me so happy that it exists! A girl can dream, but I would have loved to hear other PS pieces here on your channel. No other words but just this one - ecstatic! +__+ Keep doing what you're doing! And have a great day sir. :)
Thank you for your kind comment, and your welcome! Well i might possibly be doing a ps3 album, not sure if ill try the seamless approach again, reason i did that with the ps2 was i noticed alot of the songs had same basslines tempo etc which i thought would make it transition easily. I might do a fade in and out. But ill cross that bridge when i come to it. I hope you have a great day too and welcome aboard! 😁

This is an excellent remix of the sound track. It gives a fresh take on the tunes but in a way that is legit to the game. I really find the transitions incredible.
Just amazing! So respectful of the source material but making it feel fresh and modern is such a tough job, but you absolutely nailed it here! Bravissimo!
@@lukejansen3540 I'm back re-listening as I have many times since I discovered this two years ago. I realised that because the order of the tracks is how one would experience them in the game that this takes me right back to that summer in 1991 when I was playing through PS2 to completion for the first time. I'm there in my room in my parents house again, drinking A&W root beer with my Sega Mega Drive and playing PS2 from dawn to midnight and sometimes midnight through to dawn :D Thank you again!
Ok, now that I'm done fawning over this like some crazy teenage fangirl, I think it's time I gave you more technical feedback, as a remixer to another. You said that the issue you struggled with the most was transition, well it doesn't show. I'll grant you that there are 2-3 of them that felt a bit forced but the vast majority are smooth flowing and seamless. Your choice of instrument is not only appropriate to the mood set by PS2, it's just great! It has this retro midi vibe that echoes the synth/electro that was popular in the late 80s. It's all so very simplistic how you didn't try to change the chord scheme and progression, you did not alter the original content beyond what was necessary yet, you managed to give it a fresh, delightful quality. I have listened to all these songs THOUSANDS of times since PS2 came out in 1989 and I know all of them inside out (PS2 and PS3 are my favorite video games ever). I love how your mix still surprises my senses at every turn; it's been on loop since yesterday and every re-listen makes me discover something else. The attention you gave to some of the songs that never or very rarely got any remix love whatsoever is very commendable. Excite Town, Silent Zone, Pressure, My Home, Secret Ways, what you did with them makes me feel like you really love those. That or you're just a very intuitive musician! It's really great that you managed to give these melodies such a neat and fresh twist using so little change from the original material. Just take my remixes for example, I am known to go overboard, overwhelming my listeners with legions of instruments and improvisations. You stayed closer to the original and achieved something magical. Speaking of impro, your little part after Violation, I wish it lasted longer, it's REALLY neat. You use FLStudio? I like the crisp sound quality you got. I have been using Propellerhead Reason all my remixer's life and all the mixes I do seem to lack this crisp, clean sound you got. I need to do my homework I guess. Oh and it's perfectly fine to leave Bracky News out. No one like Bracky News ;-)
Wow thanks for the awesome and detailed comment! I'm not sure where to start to reply lol. Well I checked a couple of your videos out, good stuff man. I know what you mean about the "crisp" thing I still sometimes struggle with that one, I could try give you a few tips, I've never used reason but all DAW's follow the same principles as far as I know. When I write songs I spend a good amount of time just on the kick, and more recently the snare too, sometimes i'll layer a snare with 10 snares just to get the snare sound I want. The kick can easily get washed out with bass lines etc so I do volume ducks or eq ducks every time the kick strikes, it turns down the volume on nearly every instrument. I'm not sure how much you know about the technical side to writing electronic music, but 2 things are (and this is the biggest one) everything fights for its spot in the mix, by this I mean instruments compete with each other if they use the same frequencies so it's important to cut what isn't needed to save room for other stuff. This took me a while to get my head around in the beginning. The next thing is Volume, you might of noticed the louder it is, the more distorted or messy it sounds, this is a tough one because I like to get my music loud, even if it's quieter once uploaded. There is plenty of videos on how to get a loud mix without clipping etc. Another thing I find important is where what instrument sits, left channel 30% etc. I have kick in the center, main melodies in the center snare in the center but diffused a little to the sides, and chords instruments like guitar or piano or synth I'll make one line left channel and the other right channel. Also I like the kick loud and the snare loud, snare should be loud as the main melody. sorry if you already knew all of this btw. I'm still learning stuff. Those were some of the things I wish I knew years ago, also most of the time your ear likes to listen to either whats loudest or in the mid to high frequency so I usually keep main melodies in that spot, this also makes pads and reverb stuff sound wider too. I'm glad you like the improv part I was experimenting and almost wasn't going to use it as a transition but I liked it too much to not use it lol. Also doing remixes, It can be tricky to know how much to change, you want the people who played these games to kinda have that same feeling about it, but you also want some things changed for that fresh take on it, least that's how I feel. In the beginning I was pretty much writing the songs as they were maybe just adding drums or something, but now I've got a bit of positive response from people about some of the remixes I did where I kinda did a lot of my own thing, so now I'm not too scared to do that lol. Also your comment "no one like Bracky News" made me laugh!
Glad that you like my stuff! I was on a bit of a downer lately as my two last remixes did not get any traction at all but your mix and this exchange of opinions is kindling the creative fire! I've often heard of this volume duck technique but I have yet to use it myself. Perhaps I should use it in my next electro mix. (In my orchestral mixes, it's not really an issue). As for the technical side, I have been making electronic music for about 20 years now but did my first remix around 2006 only. I am an electronics technician by profession, my specialty is sounds and audio, I gave a class on harmonics and waveforms and that stuff a few years back, good times. You are absolutely right, the band between oh... 500Hz and 2KHz is a mess with you have too many instruments but my biggest problem often is the basslines adding up, creating distortion and intermodulation. Volume is also a big problem for me, I tend to CRANK EVERYTHING UP. Guilty as charged! As you so adequately mention, panning is important to but I already do this in my songs. Yours is just awesome. I listened to your mix in my headphones at the gym today, great panning, the sound really occupies all possible space, i really liked!! As for your improvisation, you really need to do more!! You have natural talent, great potential!! I used to do my remixes very close to covers but now I take a LOT more liberties. Consequently, they grab a lot less attention, which either means I suck (dear God I hope not!) or fans prefer to stay close to the original piece. I seriously look forward to hear more from you and to exchange further knowledge. I will try to apply what you suggested in my next mix and I will definitely let you know! Keep making the world better!!
I feel a little silly now explaining electronic music stuff to a electronics technician lol. I find nearly every song I write is a battle between the bass and the kick, It's great if you choose a song to do if the bass is on the off beat like your typical techno but mostly, bass sounds better on the beat so thats why the volume duck thing comes in handy. Also lately I've been doing eq ducking too if the volume duck is not fully working how I want this is good because sometimes if things use frequencies in the snare range for example I can do some for that and same for the kick using another one. Thing is most of the time your ear won't notice the attack volume change if its ducked when the kick plays at the same time it will focus on the kick. Sorry to hear your last remixes didn't get much attention, sometimes I think they can take a while before people notice them, my last upload took me over 500 hours to write and it goes for nearly an hour, it didn't get as much as attention as I hoped it would but if one person likes it enough to listen to it more than once, well I guess it was worth it. If for nothing else at least you learn new things that might better your next remix or song. As for the fans who might prefer they stay closer to the originals well that kinda a tough one, I think a lot of it comes down to preference, and people often are quick to dislike what they don't know or recognize and sometimes it takes a while before something grows on you. Some of my favorite songs I didn't like at first but they are the ones I will always like, This is also why sometimes I add alot of subtle background parts in some of my remixes, because the next time you hear it you might pick out stuff you at first didn't first hear. When I do a remix, I usually listen to the original, then write it as close to the original as I can, even try to get similar instruments, then I layer them with things I think sound better then I fill in gaps where it needs stuff etc. But the whole time I'm usually thinking "now don't go overboard and turn it into something else" lol which can be easy to do! But it's all music, there's no right way or wrong way, there are a few technical things that help of course, but it's something you can do for life and something that everyone can enjoy from your creations. I do hope you try the volume thing, I'm not sure how you would do it in 'Reason' but I'm sure there are ways and tutorials, It certainly helped me, another thing is setting up a good compressor/limiter on the master channel to stop your track from clipping which can also be a problem makes a big difference sometimes I can spend just a few hours on that! anyways don't give up man! and I wish you all the best on your next remix :D

@@lukejansen3540 I'd highly recommend doing a remix, with real musical classic instruments sounds, that attempted in this 16mb console ingame realm, composed in its melody lyrics,, we did that awhile back, but that was before the SD card was invented (CD drive bulk archive issue did away with).

This is awesome and magical
This is great. Love the seamless transitions and great work with the improv before "Power"
Still rocking this compilation. It never gets old. Absolutely crushed it.
Love this. I remember trading in my nes and several games for this one game. My life changed forever.

It's a fairly valuable game for being old as dirt too.

@@millgiass that was usual in 16 bit console systems. There were games that were not released in the US or EU but only in Japan. You definetly done it.
Phantasy Star 2 was the first rpg i ever played , a game that made me love these kinds of games. Thank you for this amazing nostalgia trip.
Your welcome :D
Classic Phantasy Star was a truly special thing, and while I've no qualms with the like of PSO2 and other modern entries, the origina saga and its music is something that simply does not recieve the respect it deserves, kept alive only by marvelous individuals such as yourself. Phenominal work.
15:11 got me teary... I could imagine all the battle sound effects. Epic!
Phantasy star 2 ost and this video music done , both are absolutely masterpieces ❤❤❤
Thanks!
I guess I'm 4 years late but a friend just linked this to me and it's absolutely fantastic. Thank you for making me feel like a kid again while simultaneously updating this late-80s masterpiece for modern ears.
Death Place is probably my favorite omfg
I never got far in PSII as a kid, I did get half way into PSIV though, like to the air castle, but I got stopped by the 3 guys.
As close as possible to the original, enriched sound quality without overdoning the instrumentation, every song blends in perfectly with the medley and an amazing silent zone remix... 10/10!

@@David_Alvarez77 agreed 👍
Wow! Takes me back! Perfect tribute to the first JRPG I ever played (I was obsessed with it!).

I grew up playing phantasy star III and IV... I'm ready
This is an outstanding remix!
Long live to ol' classic PS!

Thank you for your kind comment, and your welcome!
I know what you mean about the "crisp" thing I still sometimes struggle with that one, I could try give you a few tips,
I've never used reason but all DAW's follow the same principles as far as I know.
I just thought I should add, find a way to 'volume duck' using automation. Don't do it manually, you'd be there forever! lol
Alright, now I know for sure you're not just absent from your channel.
Oh my this is so good 🙏🙏🙏
Please do one for Shining Force II at some point in the future! Excellent work!
