- The star of "Mom," Allison Janney, talks with correspondent Tracy Smith about the hit series' finale after eight seasons, and why she's open to something different. Janney also reveals how the shutdown of filming during the pandemic was a blessing in disguise, allowing her the opportunity to move in with her own mother following her mom's cancer diagnosis.

Mom has got to be one of the most underrated TV series of all time, it's an absolute gem...
I don't like most comedies on TV but I do like Mom
Allison is good in comedies, dramas, and looks like fun in real life! We are the same age and first saw her in Primary Colors!
Absolutely!! It's a shame that the show never got nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the Emmys nor did the cast received SAG recognition

Mom never should have been cancelled! The cast was fantastic and brought an important topic center stage in an entertaining and compassionate way. Another quality show bites the dust.

Addiction is extremely misunderstood, those of us who have suffered or may still be suffering from addiction are often judged & looked down upon, and it shows that there's hope, happiness, healthiness and a lot to gain from maintaining sobriety. It shows the good, the bad, the ugly, the beauty and everything in between. I also loved that it dealt with suicide (Jill's mother), gambling addiction (Christy), jail and prison (Marjorie and Tammy), Al-anon (Adam & eventually Tammy too), shopping addiction... money can't buy happiness... eating disorder/compulsive eating in order to cope (Jill), becoming a nurse for access to drugs as Wendy put it... etc. It's very, very real and accurate to the way in which some of us cope and the lengths we're willing to go to in order to maintain it.

I still can’t believe the show was cancelled. It has heart, sarcasm, trials and errors. The ladies on the show are very talented and the chemistry is wonderful to watch. They should at least get a spin off if the name “Mom” can’t work. I wish Allison all the best and hope we see her again on tv.

I hate they cancelled it. It still would have been a great show without Anna. The other women on the show worked great together and would have made it work.

With so many people in 12 step programs, MOM was a great comedy for those people to identify with!

Watching that, I realized I had never seen the real her when she wasn't in some character. I truly believe she is one of the most gifted actors of our time and I was sooooo excited that she won an oscar. Her character Bonnie on "Mom" is one of those that will stand the test of time.

I found “Mom” during a
holiday trip last Dec 2020 and my husband and I binge watched it for the last 5 months. We have been dealing with a serious addiction crisis in our immediate family (one of our children) for the past 4 years and I can’t tell you how much this show helped to heal, set healthy boundaries and find hope when before I could barely get through most days. Thank you so so very much to the writers, actors, producers, and everyone else that had any part of this amazing series. You ripped the bandaid off a taboo topic that has haunted and destroyed so many people/families for decades. Addiction is real. Addiction is a family disease. And like Bonnie and the rest of her crazy friends proved, you can learn to live in recovery and be grateful. ❤️

DAMN IT. I did NOT know the show was being cancelled. Crap. I LIVE for that show. Sad but true. I love ALL the actresses on it, and I love the stories. Why? Why would they cancel?
Blame the daughter, Anna Faris. She's the one who abruptly said she's leaving the show last year way before the pandemic. After that, the writing was on the wall. Truthfully, the show could have survived without her. The characters had better storylines than her. The show already changed dramatically since the first season when the kids were part of the cast and then just disappeared in the next season.
I've watched the show from the beginning and always loved it. I did think this past season just wasn't as funny as the previous ones but it was still good. I'll greatly miss it.
LOL. I'm actually glad Anna Faris is gone. I didn't find her that essential. She isn't that good as an actress. I like the stories MUCH better this year.

Her comment about “hating change” means so much to me. Yes. Hasn’t this been the last year plus of doing what makes us uncomfortable? This lady is so lovely and open.

I love the show! Can’t believe that season 8 is the finale season. This show has always been heart warming to me and all the characters are lovely. Love Bonnie, Marjorie, Jill, Adam, Tammy, Wendy, and others. This show is irreplaceable.
This interview is one of the reasons I have been a fan since CBS Sunday Morning started. Charles Karalt drove us around the US so we’d see the road less traveled 🧳 Charles Osgood kept us informed on the radio 📻 and television 📺. He played a lovely piano 🎹 too. True. However, Tracy Smith upstages the people she interviews. I'm sure it's not done on purpose, but she needs to learn to reign back her energy and let the person being interviewed have the spotlight.
For those of us who were (are) victims of addiction this show was a Godsend. It put a human face on the disease of addiction and how it can take over the lives of the most warm and charming people. I'm sure there were many of us while laughing at the masterful writing we also stopped to think "My God, I know the feeling, I've been there". Thank you Allison and all the crew of "Mom" , you will all be missed.

She's the reason that I keep watching the West Wing. Love every scene that she's in especially the ones with Josh and Donna. Can't even stop smiling as thinking about the episode "CJ's emergency root-canal and Josh taking over the press conference and Donna trying to help with the translation). She's the best CJ and the best Press Secretary that anyone could have dreamed of.
After hearing about her brother, I can now see why Allison lives for the Bonnie character and was so good in that role.

Interestingly I never stumbled across the show Mom until after its final episode. Now I'm so hooked I watch it every day and have access to the whole series on line. My first wife is an alcoholic, assuming she's still alive. That 10 yrs messed me up big time. How is it I laugh and cry at the same time through every episode.
Tonight is the very last episode of this beloved show and I will miss it dearly!

She is a great actress,and i also have a "Bonnie" in my past lol! On the serious side ,my late mother was a drug and alcohol counselor for 30 years,and one of the last TV shows we watched together was the Mom where Bonnie goes to her mother's grave to forgive her

My sister died in 2019 of alcoholism. We always watched the show. Even though she said she hated the show. I knew she was watching. I miss her and I miss the show.
I was stunned by her acting when she appeared in American Beauty in 1999. Her role as the almost catatonic wife of a retired Marine Colonel stole the movie from the more known players. I thought about it for days, which is something I rarely do with movies. She could have easily overdone the histrionics, but the underplayed performance made you ache for her pain and loneliness.
Yyyeess!! A small but memorable part of hers. I think her role was cut down though in the final cut (as were many other interesting things) in that film
Mom is a show I really like everyone.....everyone . Really gonna miss it. Bummer!

Of course we're all sad Mom is ending in its 8th season, but I'm still looking forward to see something new in what Allison can do. Change might be scary, but it'll give her a chance to show some of her 'hidden' side.
I've watched since the very first episode of mom... Love love LOVE Allison... The entire cast is great. I loved when Anna Farris was there, BUT even with her leaving, I still would have watched for 20 more years & loved every episode!! My favorite Allison Janney is her role in Juno... She's hilarious as well as serious... Amazing woman, amazing show... Really sad to see it go...

My heart breaks for her losing a parent or grandparent/family to cancer is such a difficult thing especially seeing them battling it and a lot of times not making but she’s watching from above 👆🙏🏾

One of my all time favorite actresses. Allison can play any kind of character. Gonna miss seeing Mom. My fav show. Great profile piece. 😃👍❤
It is still hard for me to realize that Mom has been brought to an end. There must have been some major 'brawl' between Anna Faris and the CBS executives (we know how saintly they are) for her to walk off the show. Even Allison, here in this interview, is told not to discuss anything to do with it. Just more censorship keeping us ignorant or ill informed of what really happened. Anna and Allison together were pure magic and for the executives who let things go the way they did - you call yourselves professionals? You let a profitable show (for CBS) go. You ended a very well received show which had a large following. You ended one of the most quality shows on TV, for what? to make room for yet another reality TV show? And you call yourselves professionals. A high school student could have made a better decision than you did, of course you don't miss out on that big fat salary. This show had quality with great writing in company with Big Bang Theory and Frasier and a host of others PLUS, it has helped so many people who are dealing with addictions; using humor, separation of the addiction from the person, perseverance through extreme challenges, hope, light at the end of the tunnel (no, it's not an on coming train) and learning how to serve others selflessly. If there is anything we need now more than ever, I just touched upon the list. This show is a sitcom - yes, this show is a comedy - yes but it has been so much more. This show has served as therapy for so many. CBS has done us a great disservice by ending this show. A big THANK YOU to all of the cast for such a heartwarming association of friendship and family. Mom certainly could have continued for several more years to come.

I love this shell so much I was in the hospital last year cancer for seven months and I look forward to two episodes every night help me get through
She's been fabulous in movies & until Mom, I never knew she was this funny! To me, she made the show. The cast is great & the storyline between her & Christy was amazing. I know her fiancee is 20 years younger. I hope she does EVERYTHING she wants do do.
You should check her out in Drop Dead Gorgeous. She steals the movie.
