Never added a “sump guard” on any road bike.. that being 49 years of owning/riding. Never had one issue due to not having one. But you did a great job instructing the fitment. Thanks!

Bought this accessory before I got my bike,
Haven't fitted it yet waiting to get first service done.
Talking about servicing was going to do it myself.
Changed my mind because I've had a couple of issues with the Meteor firstly, came back from a ride went to start it just turned over didn't fire up.
Checked everything still nothing left it for a couple of minutes then started fine.
Then the next time I took it out the engine hesitated for a split second.
Then ran ok all the way home.
So told my enfield dealer he will investigate when I take it in.
So just incase they get funny about working on the bike thought I'd wait till the warranty has expired just to be on the safe side.
As always Stu another great instructional video.
    Keep them coming.
    Safe riding.
Ps get yourself a bike lift , myself I'm fed up grubbing around on the floor at my age.

Beautiful video. Thanks for explaining the mechanism, as I never looked at how it was fitted on the frame. I got the engine and sump guards the same day i purchased the classic, and only bothered about it on its first oil change at 45 days. The service staff were reluctant to remove it and let oil drop down on the sumpguard, and flow to the tray. I complained and made them open it and wash again.
    That's the only inconvenience.
It is beautifully designed that no aftermarket ones could design any better and mine so far suffered small dents from the improperly made speedbreakers (humps) and flying gravel. It is worth the amount paid.

I'm always impressed by manufacturers who supply grommets and spacer shafts.
If the owner is of the "grease'em" school, *dielectric grease* - the same grease
used on spark plug boots and in mechanical distributors - works nicely and doesn't
    harm the rubber.

Good video on fitting the sump guard and a helpful update on the adjustable levers. I bought mine for the GT from Hitchcocks a month or so ago and they were really helpful in deciding between the short and long versions. Dan advised going with the short version if bar end mirrors were to be fitted to the GT. I went with the black as the colour matches the tank. I originally decided on the adjustable levers purely for the ergonomics and they work a treat as they make covering the brake and clutch just that much more comfortable. Now I can easily get the second phalanx on the middle fingers resting on the levers and find that it generates just a little more power to the lever operation, with ease, if needed.
While I was buying the levers, I also spied a bookazine on Royal Enfield and on a whim I added it to my purchases. Turned out to be well worth the read and the ten quid asking price. Now I just have to get around to fitting the 16T front sprocket. Cheers

Pete I have a sump guard on my Classic 500. It's the work of minutes to remove for dropping the oil and clean up. The guard doesn't get particularly dirty either, but the added protection to the lower half of the engine is worth what little faff there is.

Another great video Stu. Thank you 🙂 I actually think this 350 engine/sump guard here could be better than the one for the Classic 500 because it hasn't got those unnecessary vents in there, which could allow some grit to get through.... The only thing I would say is that whenever I remove a bolt which exposes the interior of a bike frame or frame tube, it's a good belt and braces practice to squirt in a dose of Dinitrol cavity protection. Amazing stuff. It has saved the sills on my MG TF 🙂

I ordered a skid plate kit for my 350 classic from ebay (india), it came with everything but the grommets and metal inserts. I went ahead and mounted it, bolts only to see how it gets along. I may need to find the grommets and inserts if it starts singing with the vibes. Great video, I had the same experience mounting it and found that I needed to leave the mounting brackets loose until I fitted the plate. Once tight, I was ablet to tighten up the undercarriage bracket and top bracket with only a little bit of angst.

Another great video Stu. Just noticed on my classic 500 it's broken another spoke on the rear wheel. One broke last year so I replaced the one but bought a handful just in case. Thought it might have been a one off but this second one has broke in the same place at the hub end on the bend of the spoke. Mines a 68 plate with just over 6000 miles. One thing us blokes are good at, is ignoring Instruction leaflets, until we realise we ain't so cleaver as we thought...I'm as guilty as any of us...I'm going to change the rear brake pads today...Triumph maintenance manual on hand ...just in case...
Seeing you working on your bike/s over the last few years prompts me to say what a 'Pain in the Bottom' doing any type of job on the lower part of the bike without a Bike Lift,,. No more scrabbling about on the floor/ground, no more struggling to return to vertical...( age related)... No more trying to work on parts very difficult to see, let alone work on. I would definitely invest in one if I owned a garage It makes life so much easier when doing the simplest of tasks... ie: changing oil/filers etc!....... rear brake pads!.....not to mention aches and pains induced by abusing ones body by laying on the hard unyielding ground...There is a certain satisfaction doing your own maintenance, mods etc! however, there comes a time when you needs all the help you can get...

The instructions and REs own DIY video for the Classic 350 show everything expect how you actually adjust the chain slack once everything is loosened. My Himalayan had the lock nut and adjuster set up. The Classic 350 appears to have locking screws but I'm not sure how the actual adjustment is done. I appreciate you are a busy man. @geraldscott4302 2 ปีที่แล้ว

First, this "QR" code thing is getting out of hand. I have no way to read those things, and I know quite a few others who don't either. Second, I generally use Windex to install grommets like that. It makes them easier to install, then quickly evaporates so it doesn't cause them to come loose. Third, I have owned nearly 50 street bikes, and several dirt and dual sport bikes during the past 46 years. None of my street bikes have ever had a guard like that, and I've never had a problem. My 1966 Triumph Bonneville is completely stock (it does have some reproduction parts, but they look stock or very close to it) It has lasted 56 years without one. I can't remember ever seeing a standard or cruiser style street bike that had anything like that. The Classic 350 is supposed to copy the style of vintage British bikes, and none of them ever had anything like that. Most crotch rocket type bikes have full fairings, so they have a plastic cover over that area, but also over the entire engine. I think they look awful. I like old school style bikes, and that plate (to me anyway) ruins the look of them. I like all the mechanical bits out in the open. I consider a motorcycle to be a machine, and I want to see the mechanical parts. All my dirt and dual sport bikes OTOH have had a fairly substantial "bash plate" which looked a lot like that one. When you ride off road, it is possible to hit a large rock with the bike, and far more likely for the front knobby tire to throw rocks at the engine. One thing I wish they had done is use a wheel like this tinyurl.com/3mj3udh6 This is a wire spoke wheel that uses tubeless tires. It was used on the 1986/1987 Honda rebel 450, so the design has been around for a long time. I think it would look fine on the Classic 350, while allowing it to actually be used to go somewhere without having to call a tow truck for a flat tire.

    • @chrisweeks6973
      @chrisweeks6973 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, it is. Round bales have been around almost as long as I have. The round bales are more impervious to water when compared to the regular square (actually, rectangular) bales. Allis-Chalmers intoduced the Roto-Baler in 1947, which had rubber belts as the drive method, which was copied by the likes of International Harvester and Chamberlain John Deere. The belt's jointing method (basically large staples) proved fragile and the belts often unravelled. Sperry New Holland introduced the chain-driven 850 Round Baler onto the Australian market in about 1979. Their previous big seller was the 317 Square Baler. There is also a large rectangular baler which produces bales 3' x 4' x 9'.

@@stuartfillingham maybe you have Uncle stew but I've just never seen any. Like your muckraking videos much better especially when you hit somebody's nerve. In Fahrenheit 451 they burned books, what would they do in an age where there are no books confiscate people's cell phones?

Getting tar and road grime off a sump guard is an order of magnitude easier than removing it from a frame and engine casings. A scourer, a bit of tar and bug remover and you're done in under a minute. Which leaves more time to do important stuff, like riding.

I genuinely think that aluminium is not strong enough to be sump guard. I have steel a one

Fitted one to mine last night. The instructions said to remove the washers on the engine bolts which I did, do you think it matters. The frame bolts should be tightened to 55 Nm but couldn’t do that on the bottom bolt as no space, maybe a crows foot spanner would work.

I don't think it will make any difference, as I said I fitted and filmed this without instructions so didn't have that info available. My view is that they probably recommend washer removal to ensure there is enough thread available which there was with the washer still in place.
