    Whilst I agree with your top 3 picks, I must say that I prefer smaller areas of sumi. For me, larger areas of sumi are more attractive on Showa :) As for the length of the video, it's only because of how many fish that had to be analyzed. But the content was all informative and relevant :)

    2 - 3 -1 would be my choice, 2 Would be my winner, I like the head pattern, also it’s body posture, large head and mouth would suggest possibly a larger fish eventually. All 3 are nice fish, but are going to change so much over the next few years. Another interesting and informative video, I prefer the usual length video, as I find it easier to fit them into my day. The longer videos sometimes I have to watch in 2 or 3 parts. Stay safe and well.

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We seem to have the same taste for multiple varieties. Most likely I would also go for 2 - 3 - 1. The reason for 3 as my second choice is that I like the 'playful' pattern more then the more classic Sanke (Sanke 1).
      All three sanke have a lot of sumi visible, also still some sumi visible under the skin that will develop in the upcoming years. I wonder how these will look in a few years time.
      Thank you for the feedback as well. I will try to make this type of video a bit shorter next time. Stay safe and thank you for your comment.

      I have to say a lot of them do have heavier sumi placement. I randomly used a set of 20 Sanke. Just average quality, nothing special. I think the three last ones will have some potential. Perhaps even nice for a growing project, just to see what will happen. Nice pick on the classical old style Sanke!

  • @ultimatefishkeeping
    @ultimatefishkeeping 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Awesome video as always.
    Unfortunately I would probably say no to all of them, simply because they do not have the correct balance for my liking.
    One, I prefer less Shumi on a Sanke and, if I wanted more Shumi then I would go for a Showa.
    Second, I like it when there is a step somewhere between the head and the middle part of the Fish.
    Third, I like the Trio to be around the Shoulder area.
    Color intensity is a definite yes, but if all of the above is not there, then I would not commit to buying it.
    The First One of the very last Three, I would probably buy, just because it is still a nice looking Fish, but it will never be a Champion, nor a Runner-up.
    Stay safe Sir and take care.
    Video got the #74th 👍 up. 😊

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thank you and glad you enjoyed the video.
      Ah, I understand your choice for sure. I'm myself also a fan of less sumi and smaller sumi spots on a Sanke. These Izumiya Sanke all have more heavier sumi placement, lots of sumi visible. I have to say I just used a random set of average quality Izumiya Sanke, not really something special (also price wise 😉). Just to show what aspects I look for during the selection of a Sanke.
      Always use your own opinion when you buy a Koi, in the end you have to like it in your pond. That is most important for sure :). And go a little bit for your instinct as well.
      Thanks for your comment! Take care and enjoy your hobby.

    Question on the first pick, is it a sanke or showa? .it has a sumi in the lips of fish.

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sumi on the lips is indeed a characteristic of a Showa. Showa and Sanke always bring a lot of debate, which is of course nice as well. Many Sanke will have some 'Showa' characteristics. The other way around, there will also be a lot of Showa that have Sanke characteristics. But still the difference can quite clearly be seen when you know which aspects you have to check. When you look at the sumi patches on this Koi, they are quite small and look like small dots, which is typical for Sanke. Also the sumi placement is on the locations where it should be for Sanke (mainly body, not on the head). It doesn't have black that is going below the lateral line, while on Showa you can often spot this. On the fins you can spot the typical black stripes (Tejime) which you can spot on Sanke as well.
      When you want to see some more detailed overview of the difference between Sanke and Showa, you might want to look at this video: th-cam.com/video/nLtix-0pz3E/w-d-xo.html

    For tosai most of them have too much sumi. And sumi is too finished for koi that is under one year old. That being said, your videos are simply unmissable😊. You are well on your way to becoming a koi guru😁

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to agree these Sanke all have heavy sumi placement. Which I also personally do not prefer. But it doesn't matter I think to explain on what aspects and characteristics a Sanke should be selected. So yes: preferable smaller sumi placements, lighter placement (under the skin) with some indications it is strong and will develop in the upcoming years. Thanks for your compliment and feedback!

    How can you tell if the color is fading verses coming through? The black under the skin, you said is sumi coming up. But when it's the orange color thats lighter, you said its fading. How do you know its not orange developing? So yeah, im confused with developing color and fading color. Also, what happens if you pick one with intense sumi? You kept saying too dark but why is it too dark a bad thing? Ty

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason for that is quite simple. Black will develop over time, so it is fine if you get the Koi with underdeveloped/very light sumi(black). That's also the reason why I prefer to not select a Sanke that is too dark already: it will only get more dark area's/sumi over time.
      But, orange will not develop itself. So it needs to be in place. It can become a bit darker and heavier. But when it is fading away, it will never turn around to become more intense again.

      Hi there. It is true many of these Sanke have heavier sumi placement. It surely are Sanke though. Showa would have a different 'type' of sumi. Showa have larger patches of sumi. If I`m not wrong, majority of the fishes here are Showa but not sanke

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It are Sanke. When a Sanke does have a lot of Sumi, it does not mean that it becomes a Showa. Sanke are born as Sanke, Showa are born as Showa 😉. Also watch this video: th-cam.com/video/nLtix-0pz3E/w-d-xo.html

    why i have to accept some ones standard for what is beautiful. i dont like most of them, and i know that standards are from breeders to keep prices up

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the nice thing about keeping Koi: you can follow your own standards and determine what you like most by yourself! Many of the elements explained here though tell something about the future of a Sanke, for example will the beni get lighter or might even disappear? Is the body posture strong which will result in a larger Sanke and a more healthy body posture, it is likely that the sumi will appear or twill it disappear? etc.

      It are Sanke ;) 100%. The parents are all Sanke. I have a video here I explain you the difference in Sanke and Showa. You will see why these Koi are all Sanke (even though they have more black)

  • @chrislee7427
    @chrislee7427 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    won't pick all of them if me. Too much sumi and no nice shape of red at the head. Point is because shouldn't have sumi on the head of sanke

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, you are really strict. You make a fair point though, Sanke shouldn't have sumi visible on the head when you want a traditional high class Sanke. Personally I would also prefer to not have any sumi visible on the head area. When you select with the perspective of getting the best 3 Sanke out of this batch, would you agree on my top 3?

  • @davidwilhite8982

    You keep calling it a dorsal fin. Pectoral fin! Some expert.

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did I say dorsals for the fins with tejima? My mistake then!

  • @ukennpaint2
    @ukennpaint2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    And I believed they are not the best choices here. At this age, they are showing too much of the Sumi or black. The Japanese breeder will not consider these as tate koi or future koi.

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it are not high quality Sanke for sure, that's also what I'm explaing in this video (and why I made this video: how do you select a nice quality Sanke out of 'random' Sanke?
