It came out at Christmas and I saw it a big, old theater in town in '93 before it closed, so I always think of it as a Christmas movie. It was a revelation as a second grader because it was a Claymation family movie with such a weirdo touch. But it had a heart as well. Loved it, and was mildly obsessed with it.

I love this movie and was shocked to learn that Tim Burton had almost no role in its creation because he thought stop-motion animation was too tedious. Henry Selick was the director and, while it was meant to look like Burton’s style, the genius behind this movie is Selick.

I think the main message of this movie is, you don’t have to abandon who you are in order to embrace something new. Jack wanted to stop being the Pumpkin King, just for a while, just to try something new, and completely be the Santa Claus role. And the people of Halloween Town had no ill-intent: they weren’t trying to ruin people’s Christmas because they’re mean. They genuinely meant well and thought people would love their gifts, because that’s the mindset that they are always in. Jack didn’t have to abandon Halloween in order to embrace Christmas; he could have just asked Santa to fly by Halloween Town and involve them in the holiday when the time came. Jack thought he had to be someone different to experience something different, and the movie seems to be saying he could still have embraced his identity of the Pumpkin King without having to take Santa’s title from him, they could have enjoyed it together, in their own ways. The same could be said in reverse; if the people of Christmas Town had tried to take over Halloween, it would be the most boring and cheerful Halloween ever, with people just giving away the candy and bringing joy and love instead of scares. They’d have been equally unsuccessful and co-opting another holiday. So the message seems to be to not stop being who you are, but it’s ok to be more too.

I like your point, but the final message I understand about the movie is that, no matter how hard you try something, sometimes you won't succeed; in fact, if you are the best doing what you are doing now, why would you change that and try something new?
I know it's a more gloomy message sorry if I ruined someone's childhood xD (and also sorry for any grammar mistake English is not my main language)

There's some interesting backstory that kind explains what Oogie's whole deal is (they made a video game about it). He used to have his own bug themed holiday no one cared about compared to Halloween and he was jealous of Jack's status as the Pumpkin King, so he sent his 3 lil idiot goons to kidnap Jack, but they kidnapped Sally instead. Jack went to save Sally and stop Oogie's plan, which is how Sally fell in love with him and why Oogie is scared of Jack but always looking to undermine him.

She doesnt have a skeleton and he doesnt have any material so its kind of like they are perfect and meant for each other..... Hopefully that makes sense!

There's also a great message of accountability here! Jack could've used his good intentions as an excuse to justify the harm he caused (as so many of us do when we unintentionally hurt others), but instead the second he realizes what he's done he immediately sets out to begin trying to put things to right. That's character growth and it's a great lesson.

The Oak, I cherish your theme analysis each time I watch you all reacting to films. I have seen this film many times, and you saying the theme made me have such a lightbulb moment, and I really needed to hear that.
To summarize my scenario, I have always had turbulent Christmas holidays, but I always loved it regardless. Christmas and Halloween were my favorite holidays. Lately, within the past few years and as I grow older, I have been falling out of love with Christmas and dreading it more than liking it. My mindset has shifted to be more pessimistic because of how others around me respond to the holidays. Essentially my family broke apart and a new one formed in its place. But the newer ones are too serious about certain aspects of the holiday season regarding gifts.
I know too many people who value gift-giving over everything else. They believe that if I don't get a lot of gifts for them, then I must not love them enough. If I don't get them expensive gifts, I don't love them enough, etc. And it has just drained the holidays for me and made me despise them so much. People go into literal debt over gifts that people don't appreciate and don't use in my current circle of people. As a disclaimer they are family members, so I can't just distance myself from them, I physically live with and care for them. I know it's not like this for everyone, but this has become my reality, and I can't stand it. For instance, one of them begged for a camera, and they wanted the latest expensive model. Because older models to this person would mean that you don't care enough. And it hasn't been used once...This item was at least taken out of the box to be looked at, which is more than most of the items purchased. I rewatched people reacting to How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and my mindset literally matched the Grinch's.
I hate how people trample over others and fight one another to buy gifts (I've worked the nightmare: retail for the holidays). It's so disgusting to see "grown adults" acting in such a manner over material items. And I hate how far we strayed from the holidays being about family bonding and creating traditions instead of buying items, cards, having the best decorations on the block, etc. I didn't even want anything for Christmas this year, and I was forced to come up with items I wanted...I was treated like a horrible person because I said I didn't want anything. I'm a minimalist, so I value experiences over gifts. I would rather get food instead, go to a concert or the movies, than get an actual item. I would rather the money be spent on other things like vacations or important things like groceries.
My mind just goes toward the negative with all holidays, and I feel like Jack Skellington toward the beginning of the film. Tired of the same old thing and wanting to be introduced to a new way of thinking. "Finding happiness in the same thing other people find happiness in." Has been a growing struggle for me. "You can't create your own happiness by stealing someone else's." Hit me in a way I wasn't expecting! In my scenario, I took it as I can't look outwardly at how others have warped my view of the holiday. I need to celebrate and reinvent it for myself and not allow other people's unhappiness to affect my mood toward the holidays.

Guys more than Jack wanting to make him happy the thing Jack thought was missing is Making others Happy. So he found this sandy claws is been doing that for kids and ppl and he thought let’s give him a vacation from it and give him a happy holiday and do his job for him and make sandy and rest of the world happy. That was Jack’s intention. Jack is just a Naive personality apart from what holiday he been assigned to him.
So he wanted to do something nice the way he knew. According to him he did everything right he made tree, made sleigh, put on outfits, prepared gifts, … so u see he was being naive about the whole thing and when he realized it, he immediately made it right ❤
I absolutely love Jack Skellington he is just sooo Adorable with his intentions ❤ adore him completely.
Just the way he fell down onto the angels hands is like, angels know he didn’t intent to harm or hurt anyone … he wanted to do smthn nice the way he knew and thought was the right way.. he’s limited like that.
If Santa been assigned to do Halloween it would be disaster with jolly things .. bc Santa is limited like that.
This just shows Jack ain’t a Bad Evil as a person u know… it is just what the kinda job he assigned that’s all. May be don’t judge anyone just by what they do may be there’s more to them.
Tim burton have this absolutely incredible way of showing Beauty and Love and Innocence in What ppl stereotype as Ulgy, bad , and Evil. I love that about Tim burton movies ❤️❤️ such a genius ❤

Stop motion films like these have always amazed me. It takes so much time and patience to do the littlest movements. Hope you react to more of these stop motion films like Coraline, Corpse Bride, ParaNorman, and the very underrated FrankenWeenie.

I was really young when I saw it, around the time it came out, and I never watched it since. I must admit, I'm kinda baffled ; only now I realize how deeply it influenced my representations of horror as a kid, and some scenes instantly explained some of my childhood nightmares. (Not as in "the movie made me have nightmares", more as in "that's how my brain portrayed horror/nightmares from this point on").

Oak made a great observation. Sally having visions is no coincidence: she can have prophetic dreams, as she is a ragdoll that is originally from the Sleep Realm. Recently was released a new official book about Sally, her origins and what happens right after Nightmare Before Christmas. It’s awesome! Totally recommend (Long Live the Pumpkin Queen).

Fun fact: the actual story ends with an epilogue of sorts that says the narrator is a friend of Jack and Sally's and upon the narrators last visit, Jack and Sally had "six or seven skeleton children". It's audio'd by Sir Patrick Stewart! My sister and I used to listen to it while going to bed.

Stop-motion is made frame by frame. Henry Selick took over 100,000 photos of the models positioned fraction of an inch by a fraction of an inch to form every slide of this film. The dedication alone is astounding, let alone how smooth it is for the style and how visually impressive it is.

It's definitely a nostalgic film for a lot of people, I think when it released it hit a lot harder because it was the first of its kind and really went against the conventional Christmas "kids" story. It was child appropriate but dark, and is a great movie to watch both at Halloween and nearer Christmas! Watching it for the first time now probably doesn't carry the same weight it did back in the day, which I think is fair. It's certainly a staple in my house, alongside Home Alone, Lampoon Christmas and other little treasures 👍🏼

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. I think also a big part of the lesson is that Jack is bored because he is celebrated and succeeds even when he puts the minimum effort. So he finds something he doesn't quite understand and finds it challenging and entertaining because of it. then he figures out that by taking it from Santa and trying to do it himself he is hurting people and ruining the enjoyment for others. And he realizes he is the pumpkin king and that instead of making no effort he will just bring "some new ideas for next halloween" and do his party of spreading cheer with what he does best, scaring. I think the lesson is that even if you are the best at something, you'll get bored if you do the minimum, you'll lose interest and it'll become routine; but you can still find passion and fun if you find a way to challenge yourself and evolve in your craft.
