Does this count as hopping on the bandwagon? AM I COOL NOW?? Hahaha no pun intended. So I love this song, obviously, but I am so mad that every Disney song I adore is way out of my range. Apparently it is a qualification every Disney princess holds to be a mezzo/soprano. Screw those princesses! (no i'm just really mad you don't understand //sobs softly)

Same! I've been stretching my range since September 2012 and even though right now I can hit notes way higher than I ever used to be able to, and my chorus teacher said that I was a soprano, its still really hard to get through some songs and sometimes I just throw my hands in the air and give up.

These are also my thoughts with every pop song ever. I'm a lyrical bass and I can't sing any Disney song besides "Hellfire" and "Friends on the Other Side"

Nobody really cares as much about songs that aren't from the Disney Renaissance though. And honestly, I think the DR songs are good in part because they follow the traditional formula of selecting voices.
Shitty head voice is the bane of my existence. Especially when its only for a couple of bars in the song D: It just ruins any power i've built up and is a massive anti climax :(

Oh my God, it's like my entire musical history as a child just got condensed into exactly why I didn't pursue singing when I had the chance. So many stupid school musicals growing up, being told to just use the damn head voice and eventually just getting put semi-out of sight to sing the boys' parts. Very war flashbacks, wow.

My head voice used to be so quiet that I preferred stretching my voice to reach the high notes, but when my teacher told me not to, my head voice got louder. The two voices sound completely different, in my opinion... I sing a lot on my channel, if you're curious... But you're probably not... I don't even know why I mentioned it...

I am happy to say that I can relate. I am an alto, too, and I've been trying to record myself singing this song for the past HOUR. The problem is, I try to sing as powerfully as I usually do, but then the higher, more "soprano-suited" notes come on, and my throught gets dry, starts hurting, and my voice say "Fuck it! I'm cracking!!!" It's so annoying because I used to be able to sing really high notes when I was younger, but now I can't even sing the high notes in this song well, and I love it so much. IT'S SO FRUSTRATING!!! ARRGGGGGHHHHHHHH (I sypathize with you and know what ya mean about the Disney songs always starting OK, then getting to high XD)

UGH! I thought I was the only one with this problem. I was told when I tried out for a musical two years ago that I was not a soprano and to stop singing so high, so I got assigned alto parts, but then so many of the notes were so low I couldn't sing those EITHER but I had to stick with it just because I'M NOT A SOPRANO! *raises arms dramatically* FUCKING SOPRANOS.
My friend and I had that problem when singing as altos, then when we got to high school my teacher(who was awesome) explained we were second sopranos. They can't reach as high as first sopranos, but they also can't reach many of the alto parts. So maybe you are actually a Second Soprano! ^.^

I was gonna say; you're probably mezzo, Lauren. Which means this song should be right in your range. Honestly? I'm soprano, and the lows are too low for me. So, don't think we get all the good stuff. Frankly, the world belongs to mezzo (AKA Soprano II, or second-soprano).
Really? I feel like all the main female parts in musicals (That I've seen, that is) are sopranos. But maybe I just can't tell the difference? Idk, I'm not actually very musically inclined :P

Lauren M No worries at all. It CAN be very confusing. Fach (or vocal type) is less about what notes someone can hit as much as it's the 'colour' or tone of their voice. Sopranos have a 'ring' to their voice; mezzo can hit high notes while having a warmer head-voice than sopranos. Altos live in the lower / chest register.
Idina's not the best representation of a mezzo; she has a wide range, and is comfortable in both the alto and mezzo range. (She has no true whistle range, though she can hit certain soprano high notes.)
While I can do this song (I'm dramatic coloratura soprano) it doesn't harness the true power of my range; my natural colour is more operatic in the fifth octave. You might say I'm most comfortable singing above C4, even if I can hit an F3. It's all about how it SOUNDS.
Serena does a great job of demonstrating how she CAN hit high notes - but they're thin, tinny, and nasal. But bring her down below F5, and she has some real colour and punch. Simply put, she lives in the lower register and can open up very nicely into the middle. That'd be a contralto with a mezzo extension.
I believe Idina is the reverse; she's a mezzo with an alto extension. Her mezzo can go rather high, though. Unless you're classifying (or casting) opera, voice-type and range doesn't even matter ALL that much. Modern musical theatre has a lot of overlaps in one direction or another; 'more of a high mezzo', or, 'a very low contralto, almost high bass,' or 'low soprano with warm mezzo notes', etc.
Hell, that's how 'baritenor' came to be. Because too many leading men were being cross-cast in tenor AND bass roles, even though they were classified baritones. Heh.

I never had a problem with range, my issue always lies in power. So many Disney songs I can't do because I am NOT capable of belting. Same with Broadway numbers, too....I used to be such a Broadway kid, then my throat got all messed up and now it's 'COUGHHACKOHGODTHATIS/SHRILL/WAI'
