  • As you know I am a practical sort of a guy. But now, when major social disruption is inevitable, it time to ask big questions about humanity: Who are we and what do we want to become?
And then return to a practical plan. Needless to say I am working on one!
This is part of a new series of monthly Zoom talks and discussion for my blog - rogerhallam.com. This first session is a relaunch of the format and so all are welcome. In future we are looking to have guest speakers and livestreams. Watch this space!

40:37 I loved the answer to this question! "Challenge the materialistic frame", e.g. "[are we going to survive] is not the important question, the important question is are we going to be good people", "what's important is your self respect".

I think you should go on nate hagens podcast. Since you envision a different future with a new social contract and so on. Think that could be a great way to get your message out there

1:55 IDF was like..."Nah, we're gonna cut this guy's mic, he's making way too much sense!" #RaelTeamSix
Ps- 20:45 "Political, Social and Spiritual"...this is the structure I personally believe we need to use for all countries representative of the west, especially here in the US!

I actually listened to the whole thing. I sped it up by 50% but it still took some effort and patience.
First I started paying attention to and thinking about this Climate Business because of a video produced by James Burke, After the Warming, broadcast in 1989. That was the first I heard of the Keeling Curve.
Second, I went to college for Electrical Engineering, dropped out, but then repaired audio electronics followed by computers for Big Blue.
    Imperial Benevolent Malevolence
This global warming business reminds me of thermal runaway in transistors that can happen in analog equipment. A transistor gets too hot causing it to draw more current which makes it get hotter causing more current draw, etc., until the transistor blows.
I presume that is not what most people want to happen to the planet.
You talk about "materialism" and seem to want to address this issue with politics, possibly a revolutionary variety. But our so called Climate Scientists do not talk about Planned Obsolescence. Doesn't PO mean unnecessary manufacturing which has to produce extra CO2? Doesn't it mean extra depreciation that Economists do not talk about? What is NDP? LSE will blather about GDP but never mention the NET.

A lot can be realised by picturing what a environmentally respectful world would look like and then it's all about figuring the softest landing to get there it's kind of a just start walking and hope for the best sort of scenario at this stage.
A complete overhaul & transformation of society is possible if we can clearly explain why people will be better off for it, when you weigh it up against living with whole generations of depressed teenagers with no future & everyone drowning in hopelessness & guilt then it's much easier to just get on with it.
At this point it's not likely we will be stopping the planet from going into hothouse state, it's more about giving people some dignity & self respect to create a way out so that not everybody has to be complicit it the destruction.
There are some powerful options we have that people can take right now that everyday people can take & some that could be attained politically and through social change like making public transport free.
Raw food diet is one of the answers, it's the most ethical way of eating and to confront the agriculture monster you first have to confront the eating monster. people went off the rails a long time ago with all this manipulating fire business. When I picture a healthy world I see very little refrigeration, air conditioning or artificial heating. A lot of what we call problems are actually solutions to other problems
I would say to be real about it there are very few private vehicles everyone can use roller bags and implement a system of community transport with mini buses we would be far closer to where we should have been the whole time, if people want to use them they are there and they are free. Have to remember there are social tipping points as well and they can also work in our favour.
Hyper localisation is the answer on multiple levels. Stuff like lot of nutrition can come from making wild grass juice, people use wheatgrass but actually it's very healthy to make juice from nearly any sort of grass. Sounds like the sort of thing that we would only do in damage control but if you try it it it's really amazing fixes all sorts of deficiencies and it surprisingly nice. No wonder the horses all look at us like we are crazy. Same with foraging very powerful to bring back a sense of sacredness and inclusivity to the land. It's kind of the gateway to being alive.
Once people see how bad it going to be on a societal level they will be a lot more open to large scale changes, many people are unhappy & if there was a way out of all this they would take it.
A campaign to make public transport free would be the first step then there are less excuses for not using it + it would make the politicians look good.
Very good work what you are doing I imagine it's not easy doing what you do
    Peace & love from Australia
Yours Sincerely - TH-cam comment guy

    A. Levermann and R. Winkelmann: A simple equation for the melt elevation feedback of ice sheets, has 10% of the ice melt, 7 metres in 330 years at the fastest. Where do you get 5 metres in 100 years?
I think everything should be based on carbon, instead of debt. People could get an allowance of carbon kg wise. Free housing, food and medical care and we would reduce 80% of emissions. Electricity is 20% of our energy use, staying home would do everything we need.
    * Talking of self respect while we have lights blaring, plastic glasses, probably most of our food, fossil fuel products all around us, nylon bags, plastics for the computer, all because of fossil fuels smacks of hypocrisy. If we can't even do it in our personal lives, how can people say others must revolt, instead of actually changing themselves?
It's like the failed just stop oil campaign, all they had to do was add the word "new" and they might have got more support, but instead they made it worse and now there are heaps of fossil fuel banners and wasted fuel added to the system. Revolt to what it you can't do it?

the most important thing ever, is that the first world spend 15 trillion dollars battling the horrible covid.. with a billion for moderna ceo, that was the task most important for humanity. climate change is yesterdays knews now. ; we can't talk about it, so we can't solve it.

Most people in western countries are not aware of how deeply economized their thinking is and how their lives are built, structured and manifested in this sense?
Can we use the 70' consumption standards as a new benchmark? Paradigm shift.. less for more, today! 21st century consumer consciousness?
means massive reductions in the Basic services: food, energy, health, transportation, housing, leisure etc But how clearly can this be made immediately if there is unrestricted advertising for needs XL, which are increasingly artificially created needs, right? That requires clean analysis, clear explanations, a lot of discussion, because these XM extra much needs have firmly arrived at their right? What to do if the urgent neo-realistic restrictions do not reach the neo-liberal mindset of some generations. Can rebellion wait for transformation ?
