@@scottieturner. I love how he has the biggest smile when he says he has to watch FBI... even though 30 seconds earlier he yelled at Cliff about his blindness. 😂
This is my absolutely favourite scene. We can see how people from "all over the world" had to sit down back then at exact time to watch and enjoy something together, at the same time. And those voiceovers by Cliff and Rick are priceless
And in one of the deleted scenes (added to the beginning, before the credits in the recently released for one week only in theaters "special edition" of OUATIH), there's another Red Apple Cigarettes commercials with an actor playing Burt Reynolds at the end of the commercial.
You have to admire the love and appreciation Quentin has for art in taking the time to reshoot this whole teaser shot for shot. I'm glad to have witnessed filmmaking of this magnitude in my lifetime.
John DiMaggio It was partially reshoot. All the footage of Leo was new. They got trucks to match the original, and then they edited it with clips from the show.
shame reynolds died before this film as he was originally going to play george spahn and it wouldve been a cool easter egg to have him playing a character that watched his own episode. still bruce dern was just as good though.
I think it would have been better if Reynolds played a whole different character. An ageing Clark Gable or Gary Cooper type who has a scene with Dalton where he gives him some advice. That would have been more dignified for Reynolds. Dern is awesome at playing a whining decrepit old man. So suited to it.
Of all the “film within the film” moments of the movie, this is the best one. It’s one of 3 actual old school movies that got rehashed with Rick Dalton in them. This one just seems the most real
I knew O.U.A.T.I.H. was a tribute of sorts to Reynolds, but I did not know how poignant that honor to him was from Tarantino until now. Thank you for sharing.
This is amazing,,, the more know more about Once/hollywood film the more and more i love it. So much background work went into this film,,,hats off to all.
When I was a kid, wanting to be an actor, I thought it would be cool to have an, "FBI moment; seeing a freeze frame on my face when that " criminals fanfare" was played. Think I'll cut a video with that music, just to have it.
Awesome. Never knew this was an original episode from the show. Burt is looking strong in this scene...did he still have his own hair at this point. Those 2 shotgun blasts are pretty graphic for the time.
Burt Reynolds without the moustache is like Thanos without the Infinity Gauntlet. Still fucking formidable but... a person might fool themselves into thinking they have a chance.
Were they re-running the FBI by 1969? Because this is an episode from season 1, in 1965 or 1966. Plus the show always aired on a Sunday, and the day shown in the movie definitely doesn't seem like a Sunday.
Before he passed away, Efrem noted in an interview that he got more fan mail from fans of "Batman: The Animated Series" than his other shows, "The FBI" & "77 Sunset Strip".
I'm always wondering about deepfaking Rick Dalton in old movies in OATIH. It must be a digital effect. I always thought that Tarantino tries to avoid digital effects. Please, explain me.
iglcknr All they did was had Leonardo DiCaprio was most likely had Leonardo DiCaprio in front of a green screen and saying those lines as the actor’s did in the show. It’s not a deep fake. A deep fake would be replacing the actor’s faces with Leonardo DiCaprio’s while still keeping the exact same audio from the show. Also a lot of movies nowadays have a lot of digital effects. Especially in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Most of it are very subtle but they’re there.
iglcknr They got trucks that matched the show and reshot all of Burt Reynolds scenes will Leo. You can tell it’s not digital because they have different shotguns, and many of there movements are different.
Rickalicious1 You’re right about modern CG, but that doesn’t really apply to Tarantino. He really hates CGI and most digital effects. The only digital effect I can think of in this film was replacing Steve McQueen in The Great Escape. This sequence just used reshoots of Leo to match the original show.

I wonder if Roman Polanski gave Rick Dalton the lead role in Chinatown instead of Jack Nicholson. After all, he did help save his wife.

"Smooth leap." I knew Rick Dalton was secretly Burt Reynolds.
Burt and his stuntman, later director lived near Tate...
Makes sense since Rick and Cliff are kinda like that movie's answer to Burt and Hal Needham (director of Smokey and the Bandit).
Burt died while reading the script for Once Upon a Time’….he was supposed to play George Spawn.
