This must have been a joyride movie for the people who have originally seen "The Great Escape" or "The F.B.I." or just experienced the 1960s in general. It's amazing what Quentin Tarantino did.
Funny you mentioned that. First off, it was amazing to see how much they were able to recreate the Los Angeles of that time period. Second of all, I had never seen “The Great Escape” prior to seeing this movie. Once I saw the scene that deep-faked Leo in for Steve McQueen, I was inspired to check out that movie for myself (and it was totally worth it).
As a hardcore spaghetti western fan, i loved this movie. It truly shows how back then American actors hated being in a spaghetti western because of violent it was (also breaking the rule of a american western) and i love the fact that they literally have a poster of Il Mercanary in the theater scene. The movie is such a perfect send off to QT. I also hate how IMDB rated this a 7. This movie deserves an 8.

This actually shows off the great filmmaking that probably went unnoticed to 99% of people watching the movie. The scene from the original show and the scenes in the movie are 100% in sync. The cutaways are timed perfectly.
By chance, production was able to find the EXACT TRUCK that was used in the original "FBI" episode! They gave it fresh paint and filmed Leo's scenes with it.
It's not that hard to find a 1965 Ford Pickup Truck, the TV show was sponsored by Ford and all vehicles in the show were Fords of the year of production.....so really not that complicated or amazing.
That aired a bit late given the film took place in 1969. Also, fun fact, Burt Reynolds was originally meant to appear in the film as George Spahn but he died before production so the role went to Bruce Dern… who, funnily enough, technically appears in the Lancer scene because the novelisation confirms that Bob Gilbert was portrayed by Dern.

He's more of just an amalgamation of an archetype. A "what if" budding A-lister that could have existed at the time. Think of him more as the guy who beat out Burt for the role.
Im a big Tarantino fan and I always just figured he would never make a movie as great (or that I liked better) than Pulp Fiction but Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a masterpiece of epic proportions and my now new favorite QT flick.
This movie is so entertaining. Its Tarantinos best film ever. Goodfellas , Fargo, Shawshank, Silence of Lambs, Taxi Driver, the Godfather 1+2, A Place Beyond The Pines, Copland, Boogie Nights, American Psycho, Goonies, Casino, Lost Boys, Out of the Furnace, Nightmare On Elm, Menace To Society, CaddyShack, In Too Deep, Mean Streets, Pulp Fiction. A must for all film fans. Rewatch ability is unreal for all these films. When cable was a thing id stop at any one of these.
This was the original FBI show, not the new one (or not to be confused with) that is currently running on CBS. Fun Fact: Efrem Zimbalist Jr. (the show's star) had a daughter, Stephanie, who starred opposite Pierce Brosnan on "Remington Steele" in the '80s.
Thanks for the clip. Wonder why Tarantino didn't use a show that was aired in 69. I mean he tried to keep everything else up to date for the time period. 4 years seems like a big difference to me.
Burt Reynolds’s was meant to be on Quinton’s movie and shown here in the old TV series. It would been cool if he’d lived to be in Once Upon A and also in the series. Double appearance!
This was hilarious. It's so obvious with the gum and body language that DiCaprio is channeling Burt Reynolds throughout, kind of a wry homage of sorts. I would imagine they all got a huge kick out of it when filming.
The guy in the passenger seat of the army truck played the boss of WGN-TV on a Mary Tyler Moore episode, I think it was "The Good Time Happy News" or something like that.
