Maybe Cerulean City is so evil because the nearby Mewtwo is influencing them with its Psychic powers.
In Gen II, the Mewtwo is gone and what happens? The city is completely redesigned, and it no longer traps you. You can enter and exit freely, just like any other city.
    Coincidence? I THINK NOT!!

It looks like it'll be possible to train via the random encounters. For example, lv6-7 Ekans only know Wrap and leer, meaning with enough misses/leers you could knock them out. It could be possible for caterpie to get enough training to evolve, and then eventually switch train magikarp.

I tried the "softlock" myself. A level 5 caterpie can defeat a level 6 Sandshrew, in theory. But only if you get like 10 Defense Curls in a row.
This took 30 minutes of resetting at ~2x speed. And caterpie doesnt even level up from one Sandshrew, so you need two to level up and a third to evolve. From there you just grind your way to Butterfree, and then grind your way to Gyarados, and then proceed to get through the rest of the game pretty much normally.
Of course, the lock can be made even worse by just removing Caterpie from the equation. Escaping with a level 5 Magikarp would be infinitely more difficult - first you'd need to burn Splash's PP (use splash vs a wild pokemon, immediately run away, then save if magikarp didnt take damage and reset if not). Then you still need the same luck to beat a Sandshrew, but now with even more need for critical hits.
Regardless of whether it's actually escapable or not, it's not great game design that you have no way to grind money and only one way to grind Exp at this point.

There is a way this Red can still escape. Since his Caterpie is level 5 and knows Tackle, he can spam encounters on Route 4 and look for three specific Pokemon.
The one he wants to encounter the most is a Level 8 Spearow. Since it learns Peck, Growl, and Leer, there is a ~66% chance per turn that it will use a non-damaging move. At minimum IVs with a -ATK nature, it will take Caterpie 13 hits to KO a max IV level 8 Spearow, making the chances of winning the battle an astonishing *0.4%* chance. But it is there. If the Caterpie has a +ATK nature instead, and the Spearow has min IVs in both HP and DEF _and_ a -DEF nature, then it would take as little as 6 hits to clear. However, if the Spearow uses Growl, then obviously Caterpie's damage output suffers and so does the chance of winning.
The next up depends on the version. In LeafGreen, you can find a Level 6 Sandshrew that knows Scratch and Defense Curl. If you 50/50 the system around _20_ times, then you can win. I should also mention that Tackle has 95% accuracy this gen. For FireRed, a Level 6 Ekans can be found instead, knowing Wrap and Leer. Since Wrap is only 85% accurate and does way less damage than Scratch, plus it learning Leer instead of Defense Curl, this Ekans is actually way easier to RNG than Sandshrew. But you still have to land 7 - 8 Tackles in a row without getting hit by too many Wraps. Once your Defense is lowered enough, then Wrap will spell game over all the same.
Even with those prime conditions, it is still very easy to lose to those mons. But if you game the system enough times, then eventually Caterpie can level up and evolve. Do note that Metapod actually has lower Attack than Caterpie, so saving its evolution until Level 9 would make the process _much_ faster. Once you hit Level 10 with a Metapod and evolve into Butterfree, it's GG. Spam Confusion into Level 6 Ekans or Sandshrew until you get to ~ Level 18 - 20 (or Level 15 if you're confident in your Sleep Powder turns). Then start to switch train Magikarp. Once _that_ hits Level 20, it's actually over and Blue + Misty get steamrolled.

Another option is save-scumming until he manages to get the luck he needs to successfully defeat the wild Pokémon. It lets him retain the rare candy, but it's also a LOT slower and very luck-dependent. Pick your poison-type, Red, if you wanna get out then you'll have to go through the pain.
If there were one of those berry spots he could access, then he'd be able to grab a bunch of those and sell them for enough money for a Poké Ball, but alas, this will remain as one contingency the Pokémon Company *didn't* think of.

Is it really the most evil city when the game never tries to get you stuck there? The only way this is an issue is if you intentionally put yourself in it.
The prison is only evil because you locked yourself in and tossed the keys away. It’s not the prison’s fault

Reset back to where you saved the game in the poke center. Then, get the rare candy and sell it to buy a pokeball. Save the game again and try to catch something. Repeat until you do. This would be a hard mess to get out of but not impossible

The real reason Cerulean is designed that way is to funnel the player into encountering Bill and getting the S.S. ticket instead of getting much further in and needing to backtrack for it, and two other easy gyms are locked behind Cut which you can't use outside of battle without beating Misty first. This is the "game design" map of Cerulean and makes sense in that context, but doesn't make any sense in-universe or taken overly literally.

People here in the comments don't get the part about team rocket taking everything from you... including your Pokemon.
Instead they focus on how you can't get through the mount in a real playthrough with these two Pokemon. Well they are wrong. I'n a real playthrough you could beat the last mandatory trainer battle return to the pokecenter (or have your weakened team get killed by wild Pokemon), release your good Pokemon at the center and walk through the mount with repel.

    "horribly designed"
you were with me until this point. soft locking is very interesting, but this is not possible by accident. no one is progressing through mt. moon in such a way. it is impossible for this situation to happen organically. interesting, yes. but not a reflection of poor game design. it's about as damning as saying "what the hell, I made a new game and it deleted my data!". yeah, you consciously did that.

    • @dvillines26
      @dvillines26 หลายเดือนก่อน

yeah idk if this really demonstrates why Cerulean is poorly designed. the one-way ledge, the spike in levels of the Gym trainers and rival, this creates a situation where if you were, idk, kind of unintentionally doing minimum battles, your Pokemon would be weak enough to be stuck having to grind in a patch where everything has underwhelming experience yields. I remember having to do it once in Fire Red, and actually considering deleting my game and starting over.
