    I think Sony is finally listening to the feedbacks about their lenses costing a lot more and are too big and heavy for mirrorless cameras. I the last lens they released, the 100 to 400 mm, is lighter than the competition. Perhaps in due time they will release mk 2 of the heavier GM lenses?
    I think this lens is overall perfect, except for the sun flares, which is uncalled for for something thos expensive. Otherwise, I really love the sample images, the bokeh and the depth of field and the sharpness. I find that, zoom lenses, even good ones can have a bit of vignetting on the wide end, and this one, being a prime, obvious does not. The minimum focus distance looks good, too.
    It's just a beautiful, near perfect lens, and it's even great for videos, with the linear focus ring and the declickable aperture ring, that focus pull Jordan did looked really beautiful! Hes a real pro! Say, he mentioned he wanted a RX10 with 24-200 mm zoom. Isnt that the RX100 vi (minus the mic jack?). How does he feel about that?
    Sigma art might be cheaper but I feel that they are built for Canon cameras, first and foremost. It's not just that Sony variations merely got a MC11 adapter built in, but I think the sharpness is affected, as well. I saw Christopher Frost on TH-cam testing the Sigma Art 105 mm f1.4, and the images were sharper at the corners when mounted on a Canon 6D than on the Sony A7riii, so I'm expecting similar results all across the board, as well. And I dont think the MC11 adapter works as well as the native Sony lenses, as well, so when using Sigma on a Sony, these could be the concessions you'll have to make. If the Sony mount Sigma lenses perform the same as Canon mount + MC11, then buying the latter combination is probably the better choice, adding flexibility and possibly resale value (more buyers with more sellers in the Canon market vs less supplies and maybe less buyers, not sure how the price will be affected, actually, nor whether which one would be easier to sell, actually, come to think of it), but at least it'll easily work on both camera systems without compromising performance, comparing to the native Sony mount.
    So if Sigma really wants to do Sony right they should recalibrate their lenses and do better than a MC11 adapter fix. Otherwise, consumers will feel that they are paying the same money for inferior products, in terms of sharpness and autofocus.
    And speaking of the 105 mm f1.4, it's an amazing lens, so beautiful for portraits that Sony has no answer for. The 100 mm GM STF is sort of an awkward lens that makes no sense. Poor low light performance, bokeh looks like that of a slower lens, unless shooting in the exact scenario that it's designed for. The built in extension tube is coll, I wish more lenses would do that and make them dual purposed, rather than making us buy more lenses, which is not just about the money, but the extra weight and stuff to lug around. It's just a weird lens, though, regardless, and Sony should make a 105 mm f1.4 GM, with macro mode (yeah right, they only added the macro mode on the other one because they know it sucks and want to add bells and whistles to help sell lol).
    Hey, I really enjoy your videos, that's why i wrote so much, to hopefully encourage you to keep going strong! I feel that you and Jordan really know your stuff and I can trust your opinions. God bless!

    Loved those close up forest shots. Beautiful fall off and close focusing capability. Would be a killer comparison video with the legendary Fuji 16 1.4. That lens is meant to be made of magic...Maybe this lens compared to it can show once and for all, if this is the case.

    Chris, thank you and thank DP Review for turning me onto this lens--it is now my "go to" lens. I had been using a Leica 21 SEM but found it too wide for everyday shooting & a little slow (f/3.4). The $6500 Summilux wasn't really an option as it's stupid expensive, hard to find new & Leica M-11's/Q2's still have no IBIS....

      @squirreldemon3506 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is weird. I'm guessing they wanted everything in focus on the frame and it was too dark so they bumped up the iso. Muir woods tends to have a high contrast in lights and shadows so I would've wanted to underexposed and then bring back shadows. Maybe they're just experimenting with iso noise and corner sharpness

    I decided to return the Batis 25mm f/2 that I had just purchased before the announcement of this lens.
    I'm still fairly new to photography and filmmaking and I will be doing a bit of traveling over the coming months so I need a super solid wide lens that is also very fast since I very much enjoy being able to shoot indoors and outdoors, night and day.
    Unfortunately, I didn't have many chances to use the Batis 25 before this lens was announced and I decided to exchange it for the 24GM but I know the Batis is a great lens. It's actually smaller and lighter than this GM but at the end of the day, the GM is a whole stop faster and has the added benefit of the custom function button and the de-clickable aperture control which provide much more functionality to me than the OLED display on the Batis. Also, the GM is only $100 more than the Batis so I had to at least give it a try. If I receive mine and I just really don't like it very much, I can return it and buy another Batis.
    As for the Sigma lenses, when I had my a6500, I LOVED my Sigma 16mm and my 30mm but when it comes to their full frame E mount offerings, they're just too big and bulky in my opinion. The size and weight savings, for me, is worth the increase in price.

    I wonder if you guys had time left to make it up a bit higher in the Muir Woods, as that's where surroundings (and images) become increasingly more interesting. That being said, after Maui (I just came back myself), it's all relative anyway...

      Peter Guyton I was wondering why Sony can’t make the F1.4 line to all GM or Zeiss. I am ok with either of one of this branding. But, I understand now. Zeiss make 25mm and 85mm Batis, and Sony make 24mm and 85mm tp GM and 35, 50 mm to zeiss brand. Kill the room for zeiss zeiss buy Sony zeiss(35&50mm) fight the space with GM to zeiss.

      True, but it's a heck of a lot lighter/cheaper than the 24 1.4 from Canikon.
      Canon 24mm F1.4 1997: $1700 (~$2670 adjusted for inflation)
      Canon 24mm F1.4 II 2008: $1749 (~$2049 adjusted for inflation)
      Nikon 24mm F1.4 2010: $2199 (~$2540 adjusted for inflation)
      Sony 24mm F1.4 2018: $1400
      Batis 25mm F2 20 2015: $1300
      weight
      Nikon 24 1.4 - 620g
      Canon 24 1.4 II - 650g
      Sony 24 1.4 - 445g

      I'm sure they will in time, but I agree that it's a void in their lineup. They need something at that balanced focal length that's both lighter and cheaper than the Zeiss 1.4, but also a better low-light performer than the various 2.8 versions -- the ultimate nighttime street lens.

    Hi Chris & Jordan. I've enjoyed your refreshing & informative videos for many years & have followed you here from The Camera Store TV TH-cam channel
    I am asking you, and anyone else on this channel, for advice & information regarding the Sony a7iii.
    Background information on my situation: I am an enthusiast photographer with no intention of being paid for my work. My photograph activities are travel, recording family events, street, and portraits. I only shoot RAW. I am upgrading from a Lumix GM5. I would like to purchase the GM 24mm 1.4f lens along with the a7iii. I find the 24mm range too wide for most outdoor purposes but very good for indoor photos. The Sony crop feature addresses my focal l focal length ‘dilemma’ perfectly. However I have some concerns.
    Questions:
    1) Without doing a side by side comparison between the Sony a7iii & a7Riii cameras, would you notice the reduced resolution using crop feature on the a7iii in printed pics (no larger than 8.5 x 11)?
    2) With the latest firmware updates to both cameras, aside from the reduced AF screen coverage on the 7Riii, is there anything that is I would be missing to satisfy by photo activities by choosing the 7R over the 7?
    3) is there a noticeable degradation in the processing speed of a 2019 Apple MacBook Pro (i7) with which these larger RAW files are processed using Luminar?
    Thank you in advance for your answers.
    Morrie

    The only reason why I considered for a sec was for astro, but like you pointed it out, I like my 14mm prime lenses because they are wider although I bet they are way heavier than this lens (probably way heavier than the Rokinon 14mm F/2.8). Since I don’t do travel nor street photography, I guess I’ll pass it up. Thanks for the review.

    If you do a comparison video - could you also throw the SLR Magic 25mm 1.4 in the mix? It's manual, but probably the closest thing to the GM (13 blade iris for example) - Jordan should also love it: proper manual focus and follow focus gears! :)

    Thanks, guys for another great video!!! Is the new Sony 24mm F1.4 G-Master a lens that blows away the Sigma 24mm F1.4 Art in regards of image quality and performance (I guess the Sony is weather sealed at some level?) - I don't know, I love my trusty Sigma 24mm 1.4 Art for Canon EF-Mount and I love the flexibility it gives me in comparison to a native Sony G-Master lens. I can use this lens on my Canon DSLRs (full frame and/or APS-C), can adapt it to an EOS R and use it with an adapter even on a Sony A7. On top of that, it has hard stops at both ends of the focus range. I would love to see some kind of possibility to adapt more off-brand glass to different camera bodies (like a Sony to Canon-EF or EF-R mount etc.)...But I think that's the nature of the beast with camera brands are interested in selling lenses for their own eco-system...

  • @AgnostosGnostos
    @AgnostosGnostos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The SteadyShot technology for full frame e-mount lenses isn't necessary at all. Ten full frame e-mount cameras have been introduced and only the first two without sensor stabilization. The Sony α7R was discontinued long ago and the α7 of 2003 is very old but still in production with a very impressive low price. I doubt that the production of Sony α7 will continue for more than two years. Usually cameras don't survive in the market as new for more than seven years.
    However Sony isn't so interested with the sensor stabilization inside he APS-C e-mount cameras. Only the expensive α6500 and the recent α6600 have sensor stabilization and both have similar price of full frame e-mount cameras.

    Great video as usual with the dynamic duo, but that opening shot needed a bounce for that shadow across your face man. Just very distracting. Good info as usual. Keep up the good work.

    24mm f1.4 is the best focal for Astro per star rating! Very little Coma and CA 👍🏻

    Honestly if I am taking shots inside Churches and cathedrals then that 1.4 doesn't really matter as I am mostly taking pictures in 4 to 5.6. I would take the 16-35 f4. I think that gives the extra flexibility.

    How does this lens compare to the XF 16 1.4, it's equivalent to a 24 but that's on a 1.5 crop🤔 if you have tested the Xf16 1.4 you know it's a quite amazing little lens 😊🤗

    Is astrophotography possible on sony cameras? I've heard they have a starkiller feature and their automatic noise reduction is eating all the stars on long exposure.

    Interesting trend. The new telescopic G-Masters were also (comparatively) light-weight. This seems to be Sony's new thing. Wonder if they will re-visit their prior heavier designs?

    I wish Sony or Canon or Nikon could explain why a smaller company like Sigma can make equal quality glass and sell it for so much less money than the big companies. Sony could be selling there GM lenses for just a little bit over Sigma prices. instead of a huge amount over Sigma prices. Sony must realize that they are losing allot of sales to Sigma, and also Tamron. but they don't seem to care. because those cheaper lenses are helping pull photographers into the Sony system. personally I am really happy to see Sony making this effort to make a smaller and lighter lens. I think that all glass manufacturers should be trying to make top quality glass but as small and light as possible. unlike Sigma who doesn't seem to have a concern about size and weight judging by there 105 f1.4. and either does Canon with there 28/75 f2 that weighs 1430 g, almost as much as a 70/200 f2.8, I think Tamron had the right idea making there 28/75 f2.8 small and light at 550g. and also designed just for E mount. I wish Sigma would start to make glass only for E mount. with mirrorless designs that take advantage of the shorter flange distance. instead of extending there DSLR glass which makes the E mount glass bigger and heavier than the DSLR equivalent. anyway I am curious to see actual testing of the new 24 GM lens to see how it stacks up against the Sigma, or the 24/70 GM at 24mm.

      With an Apple product, you pay for the hardware, software _and_ services, _plus_ an extended period of updates.
      With an Android device, you buy the hardware, and only get the software and services in exchange for giving Google the right to data-mine you.
      What you should ask is why Android devices are so expensive.

      So apparently Sony put more R&D (= MONEY) into making their lens light and compact. And then you blame them for charging that investment to the customer. So who should pay for those R&D costs in your opinion then? Your other comparisons don't make a lot of sense either. Ofcourse a 28-70/2 is going to be big and heavy. Ofcourse a 105/1.4 is going to be big and heavy. That's what large apertures do to lenses.

  • @pjw2000
    @pjw2000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Size/weight vs cost seems to be a big divide between Sigma Art and Sony in general. Both of their 24-105 lenses immediately come to mind. I got a sweet deal on the Art, and it's a great lens, but it is a bitch to carry around.
    Anyway, thanks for the quick review. It'll be interesting to see the full reviews in time, especially regarding coma performance.

    The Batis 25mm is smaller and lighter than the new Sony GM. Sure, it's only an f2, but, at two hundred dollars less, that's simply not an issue. Wouldn't even consider the bigger, heavier Sigma! What Sony needs to do is not spend energy making lenses that others already make, but give us something we really need . . . a 300mm f2.8 GM stabilized lens!
