    for datacenters and land networks, i really like fiber optical cable and switching equipment for fiber, like sfp switches and connectors and of course the fiber optical cable.
    i do a small bit programming and configurating on server and switches, but the funniest thing is the fiber cable installation and not the copper cable.

    I feel like such a commoner using 1GB connections between my computers and servers now! I saw Linus Tech Tips with his 40GB/s network between machines and I have wanted to upgrade network speeds, but I have simply not made the investment in switches and routers for the change yet.

      At least I found out that the older 40g qsfp cards that use pcie 2 x8 cant even deliver the 40Gb per Port because pcie 2 x8 only gives 32Gb bandwidth so you end up with 1 32Gbps connection or 2 16G ones

  • @zenja42

    at Work the whole base infrastructure is Singlemode. We test how mutch stress an patch cable could handle and yes you could see an minimal drop if you step on it/snip against it. Multimode OM* is the same, but if you go up from OM2 to OM3 or 4 it is less an problem because of the higher quality of the fiber and the drop wount be as high as in OM1.
    Of cause dual Fiber/single way is commend in nomal use, but some carrier, especially FTTH one, use dual Way/single Fiber with 1/10G.
    Yes prices for 10G are Multi Mode 300/550m < Single Mode 10k < Single Mode 40k but if you want to use Fiber Channel 16G or go multiplexing like DWDM... man there you have to pay an massiv enterprise premium.
    And don't reuse fiber patch cable is normal for us, too.
    Thanks you for creating :)

    I don't know why, but I built in my Homeoffice a 10GBase-T Network (because I just rewired in CAT6a/7 half a year ago, so I decided not to get LC/LC Fiber 10Gbase ). I have a Dual 10Gbase T runing from my main rig to a Bufallo BX-XP2012-EU which connects to my storage Server.

    That orange multimode fiber starts to cut out around 10Gb speeds, you want singlemode fiber or OM3/OM4 multimode fiber for 10Gb. Some of those Cisco add on cards for that series of switched only have two 10Gb ports, making the other two 1Gb ports, or all four ports can be used at 1Gb speeds. I think the cards you have are this way.

      Actually 1.25Gbyte/s, although overhead brings it down a little. The overhead depends on packet size, but generally when using jumbo frames you would get about 99% of this.

      Depends on the distance. I am using literally cheap CAT5e UTP cables at my cottage but my server and desktop are right beside each other so it is very easy to get 10GbE at that distance. Generally, CAT6A will provide 10GbE at any reasonable distance.

    What is the model of the Cisco switch? I have been looking at the Quanta LB6M, but I don't really need 24 ports.
    mellanox connectx-2 cards can be found on ebay for under $20 free shipping and 3 meter DAC cable included,
    set MTU to 9000 and I get 9.8 gbps to my fileserver.

    Hi Morten,
    Are there any standard RJ45 type cables (CAT6/A?) compatible with 10Gb Ethernet NICs? This is completely new to me, but I am not sure what the SFP is all about. I am still learning though. Thank you so much for putting up this video. It's a great starting point to learn...
    Cheers.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure,, 6 or cat7!

    • @SonnetGomes
      @SonnetGomes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no clue...looks like there both CAT6 and CAT7 is capable of handling 10Gb bandwidth, but the industry is moving towards optical cables. I was wondering about RJ45 type connector and backward compatibility with old network switches. But again...it will probably be time to upgrade switches if one needs 10GB bandwidth. Thanks again for posting these videos. It really helps keep up with technology, especially for those who dont have their own datacenter lab at home. Thanks so much.
      Also, one request, would it be possible to make a video on Switches, Fabric Connects, Cables and Connectors types? I would appreciate that so much if you could. Thanks once again.

    • @davidsomething4867
      @davidsomething4867 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cat6A is what you want for 10Gb Copper Ethernet, CAT6 should do it as well for short runs. You can get a Copper cable called a DAC which is copper cable with an SFP module at each end. This should be cheaper than 2 SFP+ and the fibre patch lead. The pro's and cons are that DAC cables can have compatibility issues between vendors and max length is about 10M where as SFP+ and Single/Multi-Mode fibre cable runs can be longer and you can use different vendor SFPs at each end but make sure they are same types along with cable i.e. LX Fibre (Long Range) SFP+ and OS2 Fibre ( 9/125) or SX Fibre (Short Range) SFP+ and OM3 Fibre Patch (50/125)

    • @davidsomething4867
      @davidsomething4867 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Additionally the more common Server cards on the second hand market are the SFP Fibre types so these will nearly always be cheaper.

    • @joelcrocker1094
      @joelcrocker1094 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would use cat 7, I have had good luck with cat 7, the new switches should know if it is realy A cat 7/6 cable or not, on mine it is two different colors and that is A gigabit switch

      Is the server management port only usable with a RSA or is it something completely different?

      i will get one for x3650 m4 and i will test for m3 (do you know if m3 supports the mezzanine type?).
      Although it is offtopic, what type of the latest Cable Management Arm (CMA) do you use for m3 and m4: 69Y1192 =IBM System x Gen-III Large Capacity CMA or 00FK622 =System x Enterprise 2U Cable Management Arm (CMA)? I mean, would it be a problem depending on the rails kit or m3 / m4, or does NOt matter?

    Soon there will be no more room in the server to add things. You need to get another one. I would like to upgrade to 10G network but have too many things to do before I can. I need a ton of hard drives for storage and to get everything organized in the server rack.

      Hi d1erubey
      If you want a cheap good server to play with. I made a video talking about that : th-cam.com/video/p2lGufUYIZw/w-d-xo.html
      But if you want a 24/7 server that has to stay in your room under your bed :-) maybe go more this way : th-cam.com/video/TqoazLMZNXY/w-d-xo.html

    Hi,
    i got myself two X540-T2 with RJ45 connectors (1 for my server/nas and 1 for my pc). But no matter what i do i cant get passed 1.4 Gigabyte/s transfer speed. I tried some real world file transfers via SMB3 Multichannel and also some benchmarks. Any idea why?
    EDIT: But i get around 1 gigabyte/s with just one port. PCIE limitation? And if yes of the card itself or my pcie port. I run the hole thing on a dual processor mainboard can that cause problems with pcie speeds?

      Do you use SSD Cache at the NAS?

    • @lildigiman
      @lildigiman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you saturating your disks' read/write speeds on the client and/or server? That would be my first guess. You should try doing some network speed tests with iperf, that way it is only testing network speed and not any other bottlenecks.

    • @Jonas_Meyer
      @Jonas_Meyer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tested the file speeds with a ram disk on both server(nas) and client(pc) with a single 13gig file. For benchmarking i used NTttcp. Also the disk tranferspeed and active time for the ram disk was fine in the windows resource monitor. I checked the specs of the nic and it says it should handle (PCI-E 2.1) 5TB/s at 8 lanes so 32 Gigabit/s uni directional on the pcie slot?

    not exactly same thing
    I have find out this hard way
    intel is crap network wise
    I have had intel AF DA
    at best I was getting 1.6gbps (from 10gbe)
    I have switched to infiniband (qlogic qle7140 single port 10gb cx4 infiniband sdr x4) which due to being out very much like pcie is actually just 8gbps
    anyway I got my 8gbps using exactly same hardware.
    Now I am getting 1GB/s from my BTRFS RAID6 previously I was getting just over 160MB/s using 2 10GbE ports
    Emulex is much better
    QLogic is much better
    Broadcom is much better
    do not use intel for networking - it is bottleneck

    • @rayhey

      Yes and no.. Lenovo Thinkpads come in 'cheap' and 'good quality' lines and even then the quality does not really match the rock solid IBM Quality. Made in UK.. not China.. not a scratch after years of usage. Compare that with current Thinkpads.. I know the Lenovo Workstations and Servers still are quite good, but at the same time the brand contains much cheap consumer products and not much innovation anymore.. I like Thinkpads! But they used to be better, at least that's my impression.
