Brookside was very interesting during this period with the Incest storyline and Sammy's child neglect storyline and lastly Mike trying to make a documentary about his experience in Thailand.
I personally feel the incest story is what killed Brookside. It simply went too far and from then on the show was never able to recover and ratings slowly declined over the next 7 years
Brookside pushed the envelope and for some, it was a turn off. Also don’t forget, in 2000, Big Brother started and became a big hit. Hollyoaks was on the rise. Channel 4 focused on that and basically disregarded Brookside as the ugly stepchild.
Sammy would probably be kicking herself wishing she’d thought of it first. Although to be fair Jacqui does look pretty smug whenever she’s around others who are talking about her.
