In 1974 a friend asked me if I ever heard Dexter Gordon play sax. He told me he was a major player. I'd heard bird, Hawk, Prez, and a lot other's. I was sure there wasn't left anyone else worth really listening to. Then I heard Dexter. My life has been richer. Thank God for good friends.
mother of god! just listen to that! Dexter you just played every broken heart, every hopeless desperation, and every regretted missed chance experienced by mankind.
Dexter's tone throughout this whole ballad is otherworldly. I've listened to this about a zillion times and it never ceases to amaze me because the depth of feeling in every note is incredible. I have the transcription and try and play it but all it does is remind me of what a genius is compared to an ordinary saxophonist. However, I thank the heavens that only one person was able to play like this and that was Dexter. It would demean his star if just anyone could match this if you know what I mean. This is musical perfection!
I listened to this song after a good friend of mine died and I broke down crying. The feelings in this song is so somber and emotional it just made it overflow. Im so thankful this song was here trough though times. Cheers.
I saw him in 1978 at the Berklee Performance Center. I was a student there and my work study job was the Friends Lounge as a bartender. He came in before the show, was quiet and cool. Did not ask for anything. Then nailed the gig. Deep tone. Cool player.
I TOTALLY AGREE ..... in music one cannot say 'the best' but sometimes when one hears music like this, it is very hard to keep that thought to yourself! Many times in my 81 yrs on this planet, I may have uttered those words, but, my dear fellow woodwind muso' I think, as Ernest Hemingway said, "it is a Movable Feast"
Freddie Hubbard is the perfect foil for Dex on this occasion; beautiful control and lovely, beautifully-timed phrasing. What an absolute joy it is for us to recall these superlative talents with this beautiful track.
This is inspiring. Makes me want to write a script for a dark movie. "There she was, all dressed in pink. Standing in a crowd like she never belonged to one. Every little detail spelled trouble. But why couldn't I stop looking? The moment you saw her, it was already too late."
Gordon makes his usual great work on this fantastic standard, but what makes this song unforgettable to me is the magic and moving trumpet solo by Freddie Hubbard from 3.20 on. I've never heard something better, goose skin everytime
I think this is my new favorite sax player. It doesn't matter what he's playing, he pours his soul into every note. I prefer this over the players that just swallow notes as fast as possible without chewing first.
He touches me too. I’ve been stumbling through this on sax this morning trying to sound as sublime as Dexter. Not likely to ever happen but I’m trying.
+CoyLady DDL i was speaking with friends just this evening about Baker's...fantastic venue...i saw Mr. Gordon at Gilly's jazz club in Dayton, Ohio...probably right around the same time he played Detroit...
Kevin Mauch What delightful conversation that much have been! Bakers was a great venue and I saw some incredible talent there. Loved that Dex held up his sax like a trophy after he finished each piece in the set. These are wonderful memories to cherish, whether in Detroit or Dayton. Thanks for writing. :)
Daaaaamn. I had this album back in the early 80's. I know it was released before then, but a neighbor had it, an once i heard it I had to get the wax. Unfortunately it, along with hundreds of others, was lost in my roommates eviction. Dexter was a baaaaad man.
@sabsaka Actually every single famous saxophone player is good at ballades... Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Illinois Jacquet... They are all wonderful at ballades.
Hi everyone. ;-) I found this old piece of jazz so inspirative, I did an a capella version of it. You're free to see and comment it. And you may all be proud of such a good taste in music.
Hi everyone. ;-) I found this old tune very inspirative. So I did a little a capella version of my own. I am open to all comments. You should all be very proud of your refined taste in music.
The red lipstick gave her the appearance of one of those Geisha girls I'd seen on TV. I couldn't tell whether it was the rain or her tears causing the two black streaks of mascara down her porcelain cheeks. The latter seemed an impossible thought. How could something so beautiful be anything but happy?

Lol..you just summed it all up the best way words can possibly express
Maxine, Dexter's widow, read your comment out on UK radio last weekend and then played this performance. She agreed with you 100% and so do I
@@1hemulen Yes she did, it bought a tear to my eye listening to this...
@@1hemulen oh my. So happy she saw my comment. Her book is terrific.
couldn't hav said itmo..hyperbolikly myself...been dere done dat..wore out the T shirt...myself..bro....
When Freddie Hubbard comes in on Trumpet. Holy Moly it sends a chill down my spine. brilliant!!
I always thought it was Chet Baker on the trumpet. Thanks for clearing that up :) In top three of such solos..
Freddie is the greatest of great trumpet players, hands down!
of course you feel a chill, thats just cause you are a huge pecho frio
me too, chill down the spine....
The tone quality and intonation at 6:42-9:36 is just absolutely phenomenal!
Ha ha, so funny....not.

It's exactly like yours. Best kept quiet. You couldn't even carry Dexter's case. Go listen and comment on Taylor Swift.

So true ❤
Is there a transcription on line?
One of my favorite songs... instruments talking.. telling this hopeless romantic story❤️❤️
I listened to this song after a good friend of mine died and I broke down crying.
The feelings in this song is so somber and emotional it just made it overflow.
Im so thankful this song was here trough though times. Cheers.
Bittersweet, poignant, majestic, deeply moving; Dexter's playing could melt the heart of a statue, and what superlative company he keeps here.
This song got me interested in classical jazz over 25 years ago. You can feel the emotion in every note that does not work with vocals.
I saw him in 1978 at the Berklee Performance Center. I was a student there and my work study job was the Friends Lounge as a bartender. He came in before the show, was quiet and cool. Did not ask for anything. Then nailed the gig. Deep tone. Cool player.
The tone Hubbard creates from 3:21 onwards reaches you straight to the bones. Pure excellence...
One of the greatest ballads in jazz history.....Freddie's solo is perfect!
One of my favorites. Dexter's playing is so heartfelt and pure. Freddie's vibrato is so vocal. Wonderful jazz from the masters!
for me Dexter was the boss of ballads, poors his heart into every note. Thanks for posting
BEAUTIFUL ....tne best sound on tenor sax ...EVER

this makes me choke up everytime I hear it, and i've heard it many, many times now....
This is just about the best jazz tune ever done. Hubbard definitely makes me weep.
This hit puts me in deep thoughts, dexter a genius at what he does on his sax, great performance.
One of the greatest trumpet solos ever......a masterpiece!
was searching for this comment..
Agreed
This is inspiring. Makes me want to write a script for a dark movie.
"There she was, all dressed in pink. Standing in a crowd like she never belonged to one. Every little detail spelled trouble. But why couldn't I stop looking? The moment you saw her, it was already too late."
absolutely amazing...i love love love the timeless Dexter Gordon...
One of the few songs I play over ... and over ... and over (without ill effect). The song is magic.
@SocialTekOttawa

"A time to love ... a time for good music.
This is the moment of good music ... Excellent"
I enjoy every single note from his sax. My soul has a pocket just for him.
I love this! I had the honor of once seeing Dexter Gordon in person, and he was awesome!
I wish I had the same chance to the see Long Tall Dexter. Too bad I live in Africa
The mellow sound of the sax is so relaxing!!! I love it! Truly a classic!
ROUND MIDNIGHT de Bertrand Tavernier. Dexter kicks asses !!! Magnificent performance !! He don't play he lives!!! MUST SEE!!!
No one does it better, just a Marvelous performance.
I think this is my new favorite sax player. It doesn't matter what he's playing, he pours his soul into every note. I prefer this over the players that just swallow notes as fast as possible without chewing first.
There is only one Dexter Gordon! Absolutely amazing....
This guy influenced me to ever start play jazz.
or to even listen to it.
He touches something deep inside me with his sax
He touches me too. I’ve been stumbling through this on sax this morning trying to sound as sublime as Dexter. Not likely to ever happen but I’m trying.
Beautiful saxephone. Late nights listening to this interpretation are promised to be full of inspiration.
Dexter played ballads like probably no one else could...his tone is perfect for this kind of tunes.
I saw Dexter Gordon at Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit many years ago. He was fabulous!

easily one of my favorite jazz albums of all time and probably the best ballad on it.
I'm A Fool To Want You.... - Dexter..
My favorite tenor sax.... Dexter Genius Gordon...!!!
Daaaaamn. I had this album back in the early 80's. I know it was released before then, but a neighbor had it, an once i heard it I had to get the wax. Unfortunately it, along with hundreds of others, was lost in my roommates eviction. Dexter was a baaaaad man.
one of the best compositions ,specially crafted by dexter...
passive aggressively listening to beautiful jazz as my brother watches Glee in the next room...thank you Dexter
One of the great jazz tracks.
Simply superb.
The one guy who voted this down should have his head examined.
Walk long and tall Dexter.
Merci pour cette playlist !!! je me régale..
Omg that is soo beautiful I've been playing for 4 years on my tenor and I hope to come close to that in my future
Dexter Gordon, musical genius, a talent from God.
Art! Trumpet broke my heart!♥️♥️
this tune can make anyone a fan of the sax and trumpet. Both are terrific here.
music where a lot of mucisians can do up their inspiration from, NO MATTER what genre you are in,
this is history
Another masterpiece from this giant!
No one mentions the rhythm section, which is as good as it gets.
This is wonderful......he is the best!!!
He is playing subtone here and it really expresses well. I dare to say better than the song itself. Dexter is just phenomenal
Amazing song... And Dexter's sax...
Just perfect !
One of my favourites.
that breathy sax is irresistible! I've been craving for this type of jazz for ages, but didn't manage to find any decent vids
Amazing!
Dexter Master total . Imbatible .
Just beautiful...
Best version.
Always the Big Dexter sound!!!
love DEXTER!
Seven people don't know great Jazz.
Comme ça le fait..........Magnifique !
feel that all through my body and soul ♤
Such an amazing ballad!
Genius
indescriptible poder definir solo hay que sentirlo, uffffff
suites my mood ! Thank you Dex.
It's a great moment in jazz.
Master of "feel".
it's even better than Sinatra's vocal version, how close Dexter's saxophone playing gets to the human voice and exceeds it!
It is NOT better, it is DIFFERENT, an instrumental, not a vocal presentation. You can't compare them.
ABSOLUTELY SUBLIME
that's beautifule... it makes me blue
@sabsaka Actually every single famous saxophone player is good at ballades... Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Illinois Jacquet... They are all wonderful at ballades.
Good point.

There's also the ghetto version, "I'm gonna want you, fool!"
Я счастлив что я понимаю ТЕБЯ!!!
mellifluous
Dexter Gordon and Freddie Hubbard: The Batman and Robin of jazz ballards.
sublime
This is the first song I've ever truly understood
Que belleza...!!
wonderful*******************
Sounds like Freddie is going into, "Round Midnight" in his intro. Wow!!
The red lipstick gave her the appearance of one of those Geisha girls I'd seen on TV. I couldn't tell whether it was the rain or her tears causing the two black streaks of mascara down her porcelain cheeks. The latter seemed an impossible thought. hermoso
same here. just great.
freddie and dex are second to no one
Boss!!
Excelente...
Frank Sinatra's finest creation, dedicated to Ava Gardner when they were having a stormy time.
Dexter Gordon shows how a ballad should be played.
Esplendida!!!!
