The tune is taken from the hymn Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika (God Bless Africa), which was composed by South African Enoch Sontonga, in 1897. The lyrics were composed after Zambian independence to specifically reflect Zambia, as opposed to Sontonga's lyrics which refer to Africa as a whole.

hey guys, I have a friend from Zambia. He loves the country so so much. He gets very emotional sharing stories of his childhood. When he listens to this he instinctively sings the national anthem. Thank you guys I just really wanted to share this with my fellow Zambian brothers and sisters.

The song was then banned by the apartheid regime as it became one of the songs for the freedom fighters. In solidarity with south Africa and as a way for African unity, several countries specifically in East and Southern Africa started using the anthem as their national anthems to support their black counterparts in South Africa. ... Several countries later dropped the anthem and replaced it with something else. However, Zambia and Tanzania kept even after the fall of apartheid.

Moreover the South African anthem only uses the first stanza from Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika, the rest is some Afrikaans song..

@@Rosalinnd it's not the same. Both anthems are derived from the Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika. However, the South African anthem only uses tue first stanza of Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika and interpolates other songs..
i remember watching sa vs zambia in a soccer match in south africa and it the anthems sounded very similar except for the word and the zambian one was lower....

All three are adaptations of Enoch Sontonga’s Nkosi Sikelela iAfrika (God bless Africa). Song was initially a prayer but was later adopted and sung at the meetings of the South African liberation movement (African National Congress). The ANC was later banned from South Africa by the apartheid government forcing them to seek refuge in various African countries where other African leaders heard the song and loved it!
