Saw them live at The Whiskey in Los Angeles around 1980. They were in the bill with The Troggs (Wild Thing). I'd love to hear you react to just about anything from XTC's great Oranges and Lemons album.

Only the second XTC song I had heard, after Making Plans For Nigel.

I had known XTC by name since 1980 but first heard '...Nigel' only in the mid 90's, followed by the OGWT live version of 'Statue Of Liberty' another 10 years later. But it was actually only two years ago that I did a first proper deep-dive into their repertoire, after their name had kept popping up all the time and I'd understood it as a nudge to do so; No regrets so far either! 😊👍

i know andy partridge wasn’t happy, subsequently, with the lyrics but it’s pretty clear to me; i always heard it from the standpoint of a teenage boy who thinks that projecting this comic character’s machismo is going to help him with the girls. i always thought it was quite an insightful song!

The cartoons come from the actual single... whcih was released as comic book within... and is sort of a comic book take on love. Andy used to read "SGT. Rock" but used the simplistic mentality of the brute man's take. I know Andy doesn't share his primitive take on relationships.... but this song is simply a catchy as hell, fun dip into the pop pool.
XTC... as always... amazing. Future reactions that's I'd recommend: "Harvest Festival" "Wrapped in Grey" "Jason and the Argonauts" (which has Andy's much more insightful look at women in the world) and "Playground." Thanks for the great reactions!!

    Hi
Thanks for doing a reaction on this wonderful song!
I remember Andy explaining what the song was about- a teenage boy who only knew the outside world through reading comics! Lyrically great but probably these days not particularly in line with woke ideology!

Yeah - the message of this one isn't particularly PC - but it's very tongue-in-cheek the way they do it. This was part of a great run of albums - Drums and Wires, Black Sea, English Settlement - where almost everything they did was great. Try "Towers of London" or "Generals and Majors" off this album.

I never closely followed the band, but XTC were always a breath of fresh air when it came to the UK singles chart, and their lyrics were often worth paying attention to. This one seems even more apposite today, given that masculine inadequacy and nerdy fear of women seem to have become cause celebres.

Great song, and you might say ahead of its time in satirizing adolescent nerd misogyny. (Sgt. Rock was a hyper-masculine DC Comics hero, for those missing the context.) And yes, the comic art used in the video was from a fold-out poster included with the original single.
