- For those that don't know, the Devilmite Beam within the original series is an all-or-nothing attack that kills the victim if they have even the slightest trace of impurity in their heart. Within the game, the damage it does can vary, dependant on how "evil" the victim is in most basic terms. Every single base form of Goku, for example, takes no damage from the attack as he's completely pure of heart, while his Super Saiyan forms take a bit of damage due to the forms' rage. There are inconsistencies with the damage some characters take in relation to their "purity", but it's still incredibly thought out.
There's no in-game audio because I decided that the sound effects of the blast got very repetitive and annoying. The music is "Power Scale", found within the same game.

Which is why Early Goku and Mid Goku are separated, but Mid Goku and End Goku are right next to each other.

So the scale probably looks something like this:
0: Pure
0-6000: Good person
6000-10000: Has some vices but is still a good person
10000-14999: Neutral. Either good with a lot of flaws, or bad with a lot of sympathetic traits.
15000-17999: Bad person. A lot of henchmen fall into this category
18000-23999: Evil, with little to no sympathetic traits to speak of.
24000: Pure evil
24001-30000: Anything here is not just evil in a moral sense, so much as physically made of the stuff
That's a neat classification, but that left me with a question: why does super saiyan form makes you "more evil"? Just like how Goku (Mid & End) base form don't take damage while his super saiyan form does.
I vividly remember that being in super saiyan form makes you "less pure heart" or something like that

Gohan having less evil in his heart when he puts on the Saiyaman act has an interesting implication. To put on that act, Gohan isn't just pretending, he's putting all his efforts to being what he imagines a superhero would be. So it's possible to change your mindset on purpose and reduce the immediate amount of evil in your heart. Theoretically, with training, anyone can learn how to suppressive the evil in their heart and reduce Devilmans attack.

This also makes sense for the transformations. Some characters took more as Super Saiyans, which implies the mindset they have when transformed has a bit of evil within
Except it shouldn't have done any damage to gohan he can ride the flying nimbus which requires a pure heart which means that he doesn't have ant evil in him

What’s funny is that the beam technically can’t do anything to Buu. It works by expanding the evil in your heart until it explodes (somehow), but Buu doesn’t even have a heart, so he’d probably just stare at Devilman with a blank look on his face.

I think the initial reason that Krillin went to Roshi for training was to learn how to pick up women
He was still able to use the spirit bomb on the fight with vegeta and you have to be pure of heart to do that

Some takeaways here: The devs really like looking at buff guys and Indians, SSJ2 "Cell needs to suffer" Gohan is way less evil than Krillin, Recoome is basically a hero considering he's right where SSJ4 Vegeta is, Omega Shenron becomes less evil by absorbing tons of negative energy, putting on a costume makes you a way better person, Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu are dicks, Piccolo Senior's finally getting the respect he deserves, Tambourine's as evil as Freeza for some reason, and Oozaru does whatever the heck it wants.
Funny how Tambourine is as evil as Freeza, since they're both voiced by Ryūsei Nakao.

The pose he makes steps on a button that triggers some dynamite. A low, underhanded trick but the great champion Hercule only takes minimal damage.

Don't worry that was a glitch in the video. This attack actually heals Mr. Satan to max HP and makes all his attacks 1 hit KO's. They had to nerf Mr. Satan to only 0.001% of his true power for this game.

I love the small details with this move. Won’t hurt regular goku pure heart. Hurts SSJ goku cause of the slight evil and rage that grows in a saiyans heart during a SSJ transformation.

On the other hand, I could also imagine gods and angels are immune to this attack entirely due to not being mortal, but rather higher beings.
For those wondering why SSJ Goku takes damage, it was originally stated that the further you go into the SSJ tree the more “evil” your heart undergoes. This is why SSJ4 has that Goku Black type voice
And why Goku was hurt by the spirit bomb when Jiren pushed it back

@@primelawliet Google it…? It’s stated in several games and official statements. Like if you ever played Budokai 3 when you unlock SSJ4 Goku talks about how his head feels like it’s gonna rapture from the pain and evil of his own heart and impure desires of destruction
SSJ4 Vegeta compares it to when he let his heart be taken over and brought back to his “True Syian self” (Majinn Vegeta)
The voice has nothing to do with the transformation it's just a choice made by the dub in JP it's just Goku's normal voice but sounding a bit more serious comparing ssj4 to ssj3 in JP it's nearly identical. And Vegeta especially doesn't change at all
Does this mean one of us is gonna have to make a BT3 tier list based on how evil a character is, where the most evil is in bottom tier and base form Goku is top tier?

I never knew this special did variable damage on antagonists.
There was a "What if" story where Frieza and King Cold arrive before Trunks was supposed to, so The Devil is the one who saves the world. It's when I tried this I realised just how much damage it dealty to Frieza and Cold that made me wonder if it varied and sure enough it does.
I only knew the whole uselessness against kid Goku, as the first Dragon Ball shows.
I would have liked to know that if I had been more curious.
In the original Dragon Ball, the danger of the technique depended on how evil your heart was. Kid Goku wasn't affected however, having a pure heart. I think it's a nice detail that they included in the game.

TIL Powering up adds evil to your heart, but Cell's 2nd and Frieza 3rd/100% forms are a little less evil than all their other forms.

Frieza should be killed instantly in his full power form considering he tries to bitch move kill goku by shooting him in the back after he was given energy by said nigga he was trying to kill.
First form Cell killed many to surpass the androids and Super Piccolo, second form Cell was just being bitchslapped by Vegeta and didn't really kill anyone after getting 17, Perfect Cell just wanted to test his strength, he wins he destroys the earth, he loses then it's game over.
I guess it makes sense Cell was the most evil when he was that alien-cicada looking thing.
Odd that Recoome took significantly less damage than the rest of the Ginyus considering he had the most brutal on screen time when he was slapping around a 5 year old and broke his neck.

To be fair Recoome isn’t really very bright. He definitely didn’t do anything he did out of malice. It was probably just “fun” for him. He probably didn’t have a scooby about Frieza and all the bad shit he did. And even if he did he would just be like “But I wanna fight. Its fun.” It’s very much an “innocent evil” like Majin Buu or Base Janemba.
In comparison, his non-Ultimate "Fork Attack" and "Demon Fork Rush" do 5500 damage and 9000 damage, respectively.
Demon Fork Rush is pretty much the best move on all good and questionably evil guys. While it's possible they gave him that much damage to make up for it, the fact it has a powered base damage of 9000 for 2 bars is ridiculous.

I just love how all versions of base Goku take zero damage but once he turns SSJ he takes a tiny bit of damage because SSJ requires you to be angry and violent, basically Goku as a SSJ is like that cow meme where there is a 0,00001% chance a cow might kill you, the chance is always there, the same applies to Goku, he is good, BUT he has a microscopic will to murder you.
I still think that, unlike Mid SSJ Goku, End SSJ Goku should take 0 damage because that's him after the training for the Cell Games, where he mastered the transformation and grown used to it as if it was his natural state, so he had the same demeanour from base form.

DBZ BT3 is a big example of how the old game were developed: details, more features, no focus to help casuals, more efforts also in graphic (not resolutions or other bullshit of this era).
Here are the evilness tiers.
0: Completely pure/innocent
1 - 5,000: A mostly good person
5,001 - 7,000: About average morality
7,001 - 10,000: Sometimes a bit of a jerk or morally dubious.
10,001 - 12,000: Chaotic neutral/very selfish/schoolyard bully
12,001 - 16,000: Actually evil
16,001 - 19,000: Very evil (probably kicks puppies for fun)
19,001 - 22,000: Sadist/super villain
22,001 - 25,500: As evil as can be (commits genocide for fun)
25,501 - 30,000: Literally made of evil or is some kind of demon
Side note: A few characters should've been rated higher than they were like the Ginyu Force and Kid Buu.

Those are some of the inconsistencies I was referring to in the description.
With Gohan, I can only assume they decided that his fits of anger were reason enough for him to take damage. With Krillin, I think it's because of his initially tainted heart in Dragon Ball, which isn't completely reformed in Z.
Maybe the spirit bomb is just less picky.

That is exactly the reason actually.
Gohan still needed to use force to push it away. The more evil hearted a person the harder it is to push it away.
That is why a Base Goku could push the Spirit Bomb against Kid Boo in equal strength, while a SSB Kaioken Goku couldnt against Jiren, since Jiren has actually good in his heart even though he is the most boring character in Dragonball

Kid buu was like one of the personisification of evil yet he was able to push the spirit bomb back to base exhausted goku and winning until dende wished for goku to regain his strenght which he easily pushed back and destroy kid buu. Raw power and strenght also had a factor in spirit bomb

Devilman has only 3 life bar (30 000), and it's not possible to reduce life to 0 in training mode, that is why
couldnt you just add a lifebar to him via customs to see if it could deal 30k
@Queen Meme well no because Devilman has 30k HP base, the orange bar and 2 additional ones. most characters have 40k, and bulky/really strong ones have 50k HP
Why does he take THAT much damage? He’s not a good guy, but as far as I know Devilman is nowhere near as bad as guys like Frieza or Hirudegarn.
I like most of the power scaling and biology mechanics they put into Tenkaichi 3 like it honestly really impressive looking back on it

Holy shit. The damages changes about how much the character is evil. Goku has a pure heart so he doesn't take damages BUT, if he transforms into a Super Saiyan it doesn't have a pure heart anymore so he gets hurt, and more he's going into transformation, more he's going into his saiyan blood and not his pure heart.
The antagonists take more damages because they are evil, even more with Janemba or Kid Boo because they meant to be the evil himself
So that's y he always goes base form when doing the spirit bomb.
Goku in Super Saiyan or latter make take damage and more damage in higher transformation due to rage. Goku become super Satan in first time because of rage for Frieza kill Krillin received a little impurities . Rage is part of negative emotion, it also used to right some wrongdoing.
I'm mad that Omega Shenron and Perfect Cell aren't a one shot kill honestly.

I think "pure of heart" may have less to do with "good" or "evil" and more to do with the person's mental being and material desires. Vegeta, no matter where he is, has a pretty large amount of damage because no matter how "good" he is, he always desires things like stronger opponents and more power to sate his pride and exert his dominance as the Prince, whereas Goku is "pure of heart" because he's 100% sure of what he wants without any negative emotions or traits guiding said path. From that train of thought, some of the values definitely make sense.

Another similar weird case is Zamasu,the only versions that apparently don't have a pure heart are Corrupted and Infinite Fusion Zamasu,the rest (yes,even Black) have a pure heart.

I can bet that the idea is that it has to do with his rage boosts by his Saiyan blood upon the person that attacks the people he cares about with his Earthling emotions. Like, he will inflict VIOLENCE. SSJ2 is practically the solid manifestation of that of not giving a fuck anymore and enjoy inflicting torture on his opponents where unlike Goku in SSJ1, he’s pissed off from Krillin dying but still has some sense of sanity of wanting to spare Frieza so he wouldn’t kill anyone ever again. …But look where it lead him at the time.
So in that fashion, Gohan is still a good person to ride the Flying Nimbus but he has dark tendencies as he fights and only in fights.

Yeah, it’s always uncomfortable to wear hot satin. You’d be better off with something a little more light and porous in the heat.
Cool that the camera angle is the same the whole time, but zigzagging across the roster just makes things random. I think starting with the weakest and progressing to the highest would make more sense. Names would also he helpful. There's a bunch of time variations and super sayian forms in this game so its hard to tell who exactly is being hit based on just the fighter icon.

And while there's no real "level" of purity requirement given in the manga, I'm lead to believe that it is a totally pure heart given that the people we've seen ride it are innocent kids. Goku, Chi-Chi, Upa, Oob, Gohan, and Goten. Gohan is the only one besides Goku we've seen ride it as an adult, and he's been sheltered away from the world most of his life.

There's a confussion in Cell's arc, Goku totally domain the ssj and some people called that state "ssj maximun power", but no, still beeing a X50 multiplier, but their minds now are fully calmed like the base state
So, Goku (end), Vegeto and Gogeta aren't more eviler in ssj form
It is so cool that base Goku gets nothing when SSJ Goku takes a little bit of damage. Just a tiny reference to the fact that SSJ is made off of pure anger, which is why he couldn't use the Spirit Bomb with it. That's such a cool detail

It's neat that it takes into account which characters were antagonists in the past; Ciaotsu and Tien cheating in the budokai tournaments, Yamcha starting off as a bandit.

I also love the fact that SSJ get more damage then the base form because your heart gets more aggressive
Perfect example is Goku, his base form gets 0 damage and as soon as he turns ssj he starts gettomg damage
So the highest were Evil Buu, Final Janemba and Demon King Piccolo with 30.000 each and after that was Devilman himself with 29.999 😂
Devilman only survived because this was done in the game’s Training Mode. That mode stops KOs from happening by automatically reducing damage that would be lethal to Max HP - 1. So Devilman would actually take 30000 damage and immediately die in normal gameplay since his Max HP is 30000.
Shame about the lack of rep of OG DB in Sparking, though I guess they have to save something for DLC. It'd be funny to see how much damage this would have done on the newer characters, and to solve the debate if Beerus counts as evil by Dragon Ball morals
Bt3 may have been seen as a simplistic, copy-paste fighter, but it had a lot of minor details like this that made it very interesting and fun. I’d take a dedicated game like this over Xenoverse any day of the week
The fact that Omega Shenron takes LESS damage after swallowing the Dragon Balls than he did before makes me question things.
I'm thinking due to the honorable nature of Nuova Shenron.

I have to assume some of these are also meant to take into account just how much damage someone can take. That's the only reason I can think of for someone like Roshi to take *slightly* less damage in Full Power form. (But then, Frieza randomly takes less damage less damage in Third form than in Second or Final. Maybe it's legitimately some kind of damage resistance some characters have? It does seem weird they'd program in such specific numbers for some of these...)

Interesting detail about kid Gohan having at least a minimum trace of evil, that's maybe because in his current state he was already trained by Piccolo and got part of his evil influence.
Piccolo's original plan for Gohan was to turn him into a demon, but at the end it was Gohan who turned Piccolo into a warrior of the good side.
I'd say it's more to do with the rage inside him.
I don't get why Goku child is pure, he killed a lot of people merciless (yes were bad guys but still not that pure)
